James Sullivan was a Lieutenant in the Australian Army in WW2, and a casualty from the conflict in New Guinea. Medically unfit for active service he was posted to Camp 4 Internment Camp as a member of the Garrison. The wheat silo was erected on railway land on the west side of the railway line at Sunbury from approx 1970s - 1980s. It served as a grain storage provision for the local cereal farmers.The former CFA depot which was in Evans Street. 'Rupertswood' mansion, in Sunbury, was the former home of Sir Rupert Clarke. His original estate covered 137317 acres in various areas in the district of Bourke in the 1880s. The 'Rupertwood' property was eventually acquired by the Salesian Order and functioned as a boys' school where many were trained in farming skills. In the 1990s it became a coeducational secondary college. The Clarke family acquired and settled much land in the Sunbury area and today 'Rupertswood' Mansion is one of the surviving grand nineteenth century mansions in Victoria. The Catholic Church has also played a prominent role in educating many of the young people in the district. The photograph shows the extensions that were built on to the former Shire of Bulla offices in the mid 1980s. The building with the curved wall and glass tiles was where the Shire of Bulla held their council meetings. The Victorian state flag and the Shire of Bulla flags are hoisted on the poles and the bust of George Evans, an early European settler in the district is on the RHS of the image. The name Croajingolong derives from the Australian Aboriginal Krauatungalung words galung, meaning "belonging to" and kraua, meaning "east". 2215.1 belonged to Mary Gilbert, a former teacher at the school. 2215.2 belonged to peter D. Sweeney's, originally Culla Hill, a former homestead, located on a site bought from the crown in 1842 by Irishman Thomas Sweeney. The cottage is important in the history of Eltham and of architectural interest as an example of a Colonial Style dwelling. The Living room shows a wooden door and floor with rug. A window to the left, two seats and a book case. This was the home of V.C. Burston.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' The roadway outside the gates was not made and was used for parking. The shops and an early fire station (near to left gate post) show the area before the Woolworths rebuilding of the area to Eltham.In February 1968 an unknown person took a series of photos from the Eltham Hotel at Pitt Street heading north along Main Road through the shopping centre to just north of Elsa Court covering the length of the section of Main Road which was duplicated shortly thereafter. Shows the condition and environment of the streesscape of Main Road, Eltham immediately prior to the duplication between Pitt Street and Elsa Court through the shopping centre. Congo Red Solution, Bayer Pharma Pty Ltd, pre 1932
Congo Red Solution was used to test the purity of Avertin before use. Avertin is a rectal anaesthetic that was used heated which could created dibromacetaldehyde and hydrobomic acid, the former being highly corrosive to rectal mucosa. Once this was known it was recommended that the solution should not be heated above body temperature and should be tested with Congo Red prior to use.Brown cardboard box with pink manufacturer's label adhered to front and text printed in black. Sketch of fellow "Dunera" internee Siegmund Lewinsohn in Camp 2 by Robert Hofmann, former Austrian Court Painter. Photo emailed to Museum. Lewinshohn was born in Dautzig, Germany, Lewinsohn and was first interned at Hay NSW and then at Tatura. He enlisted in the Australian Army in the Employment Company (V503913) on 16 November 1942 at Royal Park, Victoria.Portrait of "Dunera" internee, Siegmund Lewinsohn. St Mary's Anglican Church was originally built on land in Oaklands Road. It was licensed in 1859 by Bishop Perry, the first Anglican bishop of Melbourne.
