Animal specimen - Crimson Rosella
The Crimson Rosella is native to Australia and located in Queensland and South Australia. Australia has a diverse range of rosellas, but the crimson rosella is easily recognised by the red body and blue cheeks. These birds are friendly to humans and consume seeds, insects and some blossoms. They nest in high trees, preferably eucalyptus. Typically, a crimson rosella should have far brighter colours than the specimen collected. This specimen has also been documented as having a light blue or black beak. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This Crimson Rosella has a red feathered chest and cape across the head and blue cheeks besides the bill. The tail and wing feathers are mostly black with blue around the edges. The head is angled slightly to the specimen's left. This specimen stands upon a wooden platform and has an identification tag tied around its leg.78a. / Rennauts Parakeet / See Catalogue, page 22 /taxidermy mount, taxidermy, animalia, burke museum, beechworth, australian museum, skin, bird, california, australian native bird, crimson rosella, rosella, reynell eveleigh johns, platycercus elegans -

A collection of nine postcards donated by the Bass Coast Op Shop. Information on the back of No. 276-05. "Koala Bears were first seen by white explorers in the Blue Mountains, 1798. Early colonists from N.S.W. called it a "monkey bear". Koala means in Aboriginal "does not drink" or "no drink". They are slow-moving, tree-climbing, friendly marsupials with thick woolly fur coats, large ears and rubber nose. They live in gum trees and feed upon their leaves. Babies are born every two years, spending nine months in mother's pouch and then on her back for about six months, then leaving its parents and looking for a tree with comfortable branches."Nine coloured postcards of Phillip Island and wildlife. 276-01. Poster, Changi Chapel
The Changi Museum is a museum dedicated to Singapore's history during the Second World War. The original chapel has been re-erected at Duntroon Military Academy and is on public display as a memorial to the P.O.W's In 1988, Singapore built a replica Chapel and Museum next to the Changi Prison. When Changi Prison was expanded in 2001, the Chapel and Museum was relocated to a new site 1 km away and the Changi Chapel and Museum was officially established on 15 February 2001. Bernard Stogden, the son of Sgt. Harry Stogden, was invited to place the cross that his father made onto the wreathed altar in the new Chapel. He was claimed to have cried while doing so, as this was one of the only chances he got to interact with his father(through his work) as "Harry" Stogden died during the war. The Museum has a collection of paintings, photographs and personal effects donated by former POWs. Among the collection is a series of paintings and sketches by a POW named William Haxworth which provide valuable insight on the daily life of the internees during the occupation. In 1986, Haxworth's wife donated a collection of over 400 paintings and sketches to the National Archives of Singapore. Also in the museum is a collection of watercolour paintings by Mary Angela Bateman who was among the thousands of women and children held at Changi Prison for more than three years during the war.[1]Poster produced by Australian War Memorial detailing the history of The Changi Chapel Framedchangi, changi chapel, changi history -
University of Melbourne, Tiegs Museum of Zoology
Grey Currawong (Strepera versicolor) mounted skeleton, Mid to late 19th century
The museum register is somewhat ambiguous but it is recorded - along with about 12 others - that this specimen was transferred from the 'Nat. Sc. Dept' in September 1899. The specimen also apparently has something to do with Frederick McCoy; his name is entered as the party that identified the skeleton. It seems certain that these were a batch (accession numbers MUZD1113-1126) of specimens given to the university teaching museum during the move of the state museum from the university campus to its subsequent site on Russell St. Examination of the Currawong skeleton (and some of the others in this batch) revels that the specimen has been remounted at some point. The other items in this batch are, like this specimen, predominantly mounted articulated vertebrate skeletons: [Specimens are listed with accession number and name as written in the original register] MUZD1113 - 'Lepus timidus' (Mountain hare), mounted skeleton; currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum MUZD1114 - 'Emydura' (Short-necked Turtle), mounted skeleton; currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum MUZD1115 - 'Astur novaehollandiae' (Obsolete binomial name for Accipiter novaehollandiae - Grey Goshawk); mounted skeleton, currently in storage, disassembled, in the Tiegs Zoology Museum. MUZD1116 - 'Grey crow-shrike ♂' (Grey Currawong), mounted skeleton; currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum MUZD1117 - 'Herpestes, India' (Mongoose sp.), mounted skeleton; currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum MUZD1118 - 'Macropus giganteus (aged[?]), Goulburn River' (Eastern Grey Kangaroo), ♀ skull; whereabouts unknown MUZD1119 - 'Macropus giganteus, ?' (Eastern Grey Kangaroo), skull; whereabouts unknown MUZD1120 - 'Raia ? lemprieri' (Obsolete binomial name for Dentiraja lemprieri -Thornback Skate), stuffed; whereabouts unknown MUZD1121 - 'Cyprinus carpio' (Common carp), skeleton - roughly prepared; whereabouts unknown MUZD1122 - 'Ovis' (Domestic sheep probably Jacob Sheep, '4 horned breed'), skull; whereabouts unknown MUZD1123 - 'Cervus canadensis (Wapiti)', skull and lower jaw - no horns; currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum MUZD1124 - 'Antelope', no further information; whereabouts unknown MUZD1125 - 'Encope emarginata' (Echinoderm), currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum MUZD1126 - 'Heterocentrotus trigonarius' (Pencil urchin), currently on display in the Tiegs Zoology Museum (accession number is not written on wooden base, but on the inside of the specimen.)Mounted skeleton of Grey Currawong (Strepera versicolor). Skeleton is mounted on a black wooden stand with a round base.Accession number '2259' is written in ink on the sternum. Wooden mount has black label with white text on the base reading 'GREY CROW SHRIKE/ STREPERA VERSICOLOR'. animal, vertebrate, bird, skeleton, frederick mccoy, national museum of victoria, passeriformes, artamidae -

The Beechworth Burke Museum
Photograph, unknown
This photograph was taken in the Burke Museum c1970 and depicts an exhibition about the Kelly Gang. This photograph is of social significance due to its connection with the Burke Museum as well as the Kelly Gang. The Kelly Gang story is integral to the formation of an Australian identity and highlights the Irish oppression during the 1800s. Ned Kelly is an Australian icon, mythologised in Australian literature, art, folklore and history, and the Kelly Gang story permeates Australia's national consciousness. The Burke Museum is significant here also, as the image shows the importance of the Kelly Story to the Beechworth area and local identity. This photograph is also of research potential due to the great interest in the Kelly Gang history in Australia, and also for its presentation of a historical museum exhibition in Beechworth.Black and white, rectangular photograph, printed on photographic paperObverse: Beechworth/a pictorial record of the early days/and associations with the Kelly Gang Reverse: BMA03314 1997.3125/Agfaned kelly, kelly gang, burke museum, australia, museum, display, photograph, pictorial record, beechworth municipality, beechworth, exhibit, bust, clock, urn, vase, painting -
