Churchill Island Heritage Farm
Photograph - Photograph of moonah trees
Churchill Island has a significant photograph collection dating from the nineteenth century. Moonah trees can be seen growing in various spots around Churchill Island. They are a type of Melaleuca and can live for up to 300 to 400 years. Moonah trees were of special significance to the Bunurong people, the local aboriginal tribe, who called Churchill Island Moonar'mia. The Bunurong people also have a special legend which relates to the Moonah Tree. The legend is that there was a boy and girl who had fallen in love and wished to spend each moment in each other’s embrace, this resulted in them neglecting their family duties. The lovers still continued to disappear to be alone, so the tribal elders banished them from their village. The moonah tree trunks are the reminder of the lovers in their tightly entwined embrace twisting around each other. A statue representing this legend can be seen at the entrance to the Churchill Island Visitor Centre.Black and white photograph of group of moonah trees by the shoreline.Catalogue number written in pencil on reverse. School History: In February, 1955, Ballarat East High School opened in Hopetoun Street, in the vacated weatherboard buildings of the Girls’ Secondary School. In 1956, however, the School moved to its present site in Fussell Street, but because of the lack of space, Woodwork and Cookery classes were still held at Hopetoun Street. Since then there has been steady progress. The original building was extended, more classrooms and a library being built. A Domestic Science block was completed in 1957. Later, as mentioned elsewhere, sheltersheds, basketball courts, a bidycle shed and a canteen were provided for the pupils from funds raised by the Parents’ Association. Where there were previously bare areas of clayey soil we now have asphalt paths and neat gardens. Shrubs were planted, and seats, painted in the School colours, were places around the asphalted areas. The donor's father lived until he was 100 years of age.The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. The costume, which may have been used as a mourning dress is comprised of a matching heavy black silk skirt and top. The styling of the short bodice is accentuated by pleating and by the use of spirals of Parisian jet (black glass beads) on the bodice and cuffs. Chiffon lace is attached to the cuffs and is of the period. The dress is made of silk damask with a woven design of joined lines and circles. The rigidity of the fitted bodice is achieved by the use of baleen and by a heavy striped cotton fabric. The wide skirt, in contrast, has a stiffened brown cotton lining. There is a small insertion on the inside of the bodice that may have been used for a watch. The dress is in excellent condition. elizabeth morrison, australian fashion - 1890s, women's clothing -

Photograph, 213 Union Road, Surrey Hills c1930, 1930
The photo shows part of the process of moving a yacht, named 'Sonia' from 213 Union Road, the home of the Fleming family. It was built in the shed garage of the house and moved from it by horse and dray. The home belonged to Harold Arthur Fleming (1891-1971) and his wife, Georgiana Phyllis (nee Griffiths: 1895-1936). Harold built the boat. They had 3 children - Eric Alexander (1918-1920), Sybil Patricia (1921-2012) and another girl. The shed /garage had been the old coach house of the adjoining property, 215 Union Road. the boat was launched at the Brighton Yacht Club. Harold was a draughtsman. The Flemings lived in a number of houses in Surrey Hills: 1. 1919 - 'Radnor' in Croydon Road; the name possibly derives from Radnorshire, Wales where Georgiana was born. 2. 1921 - 169 Union Road 3. 1931 - 213 Union Road. The donor (deceased) was the daughter of the builder and married Keith Andrew Fleming. A black & white photo with 3 draught horses in the foreground. Beyond the path and fence behind them is the roof of 213 Union Road. Photograph, Stalker family beach picnic, 1930s
Associated with the Stalker family of Surrey Hills. Betty Neil Smith (Stalker) was born in 1919 in Balwyn (Surrey Hills). She was one of 4 daughters of Alexander MacLaren Stalker (1885-1970/1973) and Charlotte Eleanor Hayward (1884-1953) who were married in 1911. Her sisters were Ruth McLaren Stalker (1913, Surrey Hills), Joan Winnock Stalker (1917, Surrey Hills) and Beatrice Mary Stalker(1919). Their mother Charlotte Hayward was a teacher prior to her marriage. Their father Alexander, an accountant, lived in Wattle Valley Road, Canterbury in 1910. From 1912-1931 they are listed at ‘Benwerrin’, (44) Wandsworth Road, Surrey Hills. This was later the home of Beatrice Mary and Howard Everard. Betty, Ruth and Joan later lived at 9/48 Wandsworth Road. it is assumed that the photo is of the Stalker girls and given their parents' later residence at Brighton, this may have been taken at Brighton beach. This photo documents part of the social history of a family with a long and strong association with Surrey Hills. The backdrop of the typical bathing boxes used for changing into swimsuits, for lunch and for storing sports and beach gear, documents beach recreation and culture of the 1930s. For many years in the late nineteenth century, Brighton was Melbourne's favourite seaside destination. The now iconic bathing boxes were a response to Victorian ideas of morality and sea bathing. There are 82 Brighton bathing boxes, which protected by a heritage overlay because of their uniform scale and proportion, building materials, sentry order alignment. All retain their classic Victorian architectural features with timber framing, weatherboards and corrugated iron roofs. They remain as they did over one hundred years ago, as licensed bathing boxes. Service amenities such as electricity or water were never connected.A black and white photograph of many people enjoying the beach. There are bathing boxes in the background and some ti-tree beyond that.uniforms, clothing and dress, bathing boxes, stalker family -

The first verses were: "They fought and some died for their homeland They fought and some died now it's our land Look at his little child there's no fear in her eyes Could he not show respect for other dads that have died Take two minutes would you mind It's a pittance of time For the boys and the girls who went over In peace may they rest may we never forget why they died It's a pittance of time" Document was from a folder of documents donated to the archive by Legatee Bill Rogers that related to his time as President (March 2006 - March 2008). Document, Postcard embroidered, 1918
Embroidered cards such as this one were made by the French (usually women) for use as post cards for World War One soldiers to send home as greeting cards. The gift card with the embroidered card may not have been originally with it. The embroidered card has the date of October 1918, just one month before the official end of the war in November 1918. The name of the person who wrote ‘Somewhere in France’ on the back of the card is not listed but the handwriting appears to be similar to that on another card in our collection which is from R. Kerr from Kerr Street in Warrnambool. No information has been found on this soldier named Kerr. This embroidered card is of considerable significance as a very attractive memento of World War One and one, presumably, with local provenance. .1 The embroidered card is a World War One post card. The embroidery is on silk mounted on a white card. The embroidery is in yellow, blue, red, white and green colours and features a trail of flowers, a rising sun, six national flags, the words ‘Happy Christmas’ and other ornamentation. The embroidery is in two sections with a lift up section that could hold another card or note. The handwriting on the back has been written in pencil. The post card section has not been franked or posted. The card has marks at the edges where it has been attached to a surface with pins. The card is a little stained. .2 This is a small gift card with a coloured image of a girl with a basket of flowers.Embroidered card - ‘Happy Christmas’ ‘Somewhere in France 8/10/18’ Small gift card – ‘A Christmas Wish’ world war one and warrnambool, warrnambool historical society -
