Christ Church Anglican Church was opened on 7th March 1888. The eight vestry members had to guarantee the minister's stipend of a shilling each Sunday. There was no electricity so kerosene lamps were used. The women ran social evenings, concerts, lanternslide evenings and bazaars to raise funds. The Red Cross used the vestry for their meetings, and the Education Department hired the church for school classes until 1890 when a school was finally erected.Coloured photograph of the original Mitcham Anglican Church in Edward street, with the latest church building in the background - 2012christ church anglican church, mitcham, edward street, whitehorse historical overlay -

Royal District Nursing Service (now known as Bolton Clarke)
Photograph - Photograph, black and white, Barry Sutton, 25.07.1972
Sister Barbara Watson is an RDNS Liaison Officer and is meeting with Hospital staff and a patient in a Ward at the Alfred Hospital before the patient is discharged home where he will receive the nursing care required from a visiting RDNS Sister. Sr. Watson is wearing her RDNS winter uniform, which is a blue/grey skivvie worn under a V neck tunic style frock made of herringbone blue/grey winter material.Liaison had occurred between doctors and the Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885. This increased when Midwifery was introduced in August 1893 with close liaising with the Women’s Hospital. As District nursing grew it was recognized that closer liaising between many Public Hospitals would be beneficial, for not only the MDNS, later called Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS), Trained nurses (Sisters) but also for the patients and the hospitals. In August 1964 a Liaison Officer commenced at the Alfred Hospital. This soon increased to Liaison Officers working full time at several Public Hospitals. They facilitated the smooth transition from hospital to home for many patients who required ongoing nursing care. Liaison Sisters regularly attended discharge planning meetings, interviewed prospective patients, coordinated discharge and booked the first visit by the visiting RDNS District Sister. At the time of a patient’s discharge, the Liaison Sister forwarded information on their diagnosis and instructions regarding the care required at home to the appropriate RDNS Centre, and in turn the attending District Sister wrote a report of progress and any queries to the hospital Doctor, via the Liaison Sister, at the time the patient was attending outpatients. Any new instructions were then sent back to the District Sister. Liaising also occurred between District Sisters and Doctors when patients were referred by General Practitioners and did not attend a Hospital.Black and white photograph showing Royal District Nursing Service, RDNS, Sister (Sr.) Barbara Watson who is standing with hospital staff and with a patient who is resting in a hospital bed. On the left foreground of the photograph is Sr. Watson, who has blonde shoulder length curled hair and is wearing her RDNS uniform of a light grey skivvie worn under a darker grey V neck tunic style frock. She has her head turned to the left looking at the patient. Next right stands a Doctor, who is wearing glasses and has short dark hair. He is wearing his hospital white coat over his clothes and has his arms folded across his chest. Next right is another Doctor who is at the head of the hospital bed; He has short dark hair and is wearing his white hospital coat over a grey shirt. black tie and dark grey pants. They are all smiling at an elderly man who is sitting up in the bed resting against a white pillow and looking toward them. He is wearing glasses; has short dark sparse hair and is wearing a dark coloured pyjama coat with some white piping, and a white handkerchief in the pocket. He is looking at the three and has his hands clasped on top of the bedclothes. The hospital bed has a white iron frame and an 'over bed table' is at its foot and in the foreground of the photograph. On the right of the bed is a hospital Sister, who has short dark hair; is wearing glasses and wearing her white uniform dress and cap. She is smiling as she looks toward the patient and Doctors. A hospital curtain is against the wall behind her. Part of a window and curtain are seen on the far left of the photograph.Photographer stamp. Victorian Bands' League
Document, Victorian Bands' League : Annual General Meeting (14/07/1933), 1933
This is an extremely significant document highlighting the operations of the Victorian Bands' League in only its third year. Here we have an Annual General Meeting notice and report which would have been sent to all bands and delegates. It outlines the business of the league up until this date and the financial details. It is evident that a number of bandsmen from all over Victoria took an interest in the league given the locations and bands of the office bearers. This AGM notice is extremely significant to the history of the Victorian Bands' League due to the information that's contained and the style of presentation. It is unclear whether other AGM notices still survive which makes this rare notice very valuable for research purposes.Printed on stiff papervictorian bands' league, brunswick city, warrnambool municipal, collingwood citizens', warracknabeal and district, mentone citizens', northcote citizens' and soldiers', heidelberg municipal, south melbourne city, williamstown city, yallourn and district, shepparton and district, geelong west city, terang brass, hamilton town, stawell brass, metropolitan fire brigade -

Booklet - Program, Shire of Nillumbik et al, Heritage Week in the Shire of Nillumbik, 2004
Map, with details of activitives presented by eight local history groups across the Shire of Nillumbik 26th March to Sunday 4th April 2004. Events included a dirt farming expo at Panton Hill. Program includes message by Mayor, Cr. Lex de Man and artwork by Syd Tunn. During the latter part of 2003 all of the historical societies and similar organisations in the Shire of Nillumbik attended a series of combined meetings arranged by Nillumbik Shire Council. The meetings were arranged by the Council's Arts and Cultural Services Co-ordinator and the Community Events Officer. ..The principal outcome of meetings ..to organise a Nillumbik Heritage Week to run from Friday 26th March to Sunday 4th April. The main event will be a combined heritage "expo" from 26th to 28th March, to be held in the Panton Hill Hall. The theme will be "Dirt Farming" which derives from the subsistence farming activities of the early settlers but could be widened to include gold mining, earth building and even modem day bushland regeneration. It fits well with the name "Nillumbik" which in the language of the Wurundjeri meant the not so good country covering most of our area and contrasted with the rich soil of the Kangaroo Grounds which they called Moor-rul. The following weekend each society will arrange their own separate activities. We intend to have open days at our Local History Centre on both days and this will include a display in the adjoining former Eltham Court House. We are also planning a heritage walk at 2.00pm on each day. Other groups will be having open days, displays, walks, guided car tours and other activities. - NL 154A3 sheet folded. Medal - Medal VHAS, Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association, Circa 1880
Historical information: this medallion has historical details on three fronts. Firstly the Villiers & Heytesbury Agricultural Association. This association began with the first meeting held on May 17th 1853 at Woodford. The minutes of that meeting read “That in the opinion of this meeting, the formation of an agricultural association would be of great benefit to persons in this district engaged in farming and pastoral pursuits. It initially embraced the following: ploughing, agricultural produce, machines and implements, and livestock of all descriptions. The first show was held at Warrnambool on April 10th 1855 on a green bounded by Fairy, Henna, and Koroit Streets. It was held there until 1875 when it moved to the present Showgrounds site in Koroit Street. At the 37th Annual show in 1890 Warrnambool held its first Grand National Show, being granted by the Chamber of Agriculture in turn, in Victoria. It became known as the Warrnambool Agricultural Society in 1911. Secondly the winner, Mr Hugh Lennon. He was one of the most successful innovators and manufacturers of agricultural implements in early Australia. Although born in Ireland, he served an apprenticeship in Scotland in mechanical engineering. The Lennon plough became known Australia wide. For many years he operated his business at the northern of Elizabeth Street in Melbourne. He was active in local affairs. He died in 1886 at the age of 52. Thirdly, Stokes and Martin. Thomas Stokes came to Australia in the 1850’s and established a successful business at Mincing Lane Melbourne, manufacturing buttons, medals and tokens. Martin joined the partnership in 1873, which lasted until a disastrous fire in 1893. The business was renamed Stokes & Sons Pty Ltd and it became a public company in 1962. It is currently situated at Ringwood in the business of spare parts for electrical equipment The Villiers and Heytesbury Agricultural Association was a significant event and organisation within the Western District over a large number of years. It was one of the earliest organisations in the district and is testament to its importance to the agricultural, social, and cultural life of the district. It is significant that this particular medallion was awarded to an innovator in the ploughing industry and that it was made by a company which is still in business 130 years later. Circular copper medallion cast with Villiers & Heytesbury Agricultural Assoctn around edge with winner and event details engraved in centre. The reverse is cast with horse, cow and sheep standing above wheat sheaf and farm implements. Photograph, Commemorative plaque mounted rock at corner of Bible and Arthur Streets, Eltham, donated by R.C. McLellan, Nov 1988
Russell Yeoman advised (14 Jun 2017 society meeting) that the Shire of Eltham had been given the plaque to commemorate Walter Withers and that the rock was sourced from west of Melbourne with funds from a local government grant. The initial crane to lift the rock in place was too small and another crane was arranged. This also proved too small to lift it until a third and larger crane was arranged and the rock was installed 17 May 1990.Roll of 35mm colour negative film, 2 stripsFuji 100arthur street, bible street, memorials, r.c. mclellan, walter withers, walter withers reserve, walter withers rock
