Flag - The Mission to Seafarers, circa 2000
The flag represents The Mission to Seafarers worldwide organisation. From about the year 2000 particular flag was once flown from Flagstaff Hill's masthead on top of the turret on the St Nicholas Seamen's Church but this practice ceased around 2010 for safety reasons. The Australian beginnings were in 1856 when the Church of England (Anglican Church) established the ‘Society for Promoting Missions to Seamen Afloat, at Home and Abroad. Lord Shaftesbury was the first President and Mr William Kingston was the first Secretary. Its Constitution declared: (1)) the Object is the spiritual welfare of the seafaring classes at home and abroad. (2) In pursuance of this Object, Society will use every means consistent with the principles and received practice of the Church of England. Mr Kingston’s wife and sister designed a flag to clearly depict the Society’s Objects. It depicted the first of the three angels in Revelation 14, who possessed ‘an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. The ‘Flying Angel’ (the angel of Revelation) became the official logo of the Society and gained great popularity. In July 2000 the Missions to Seamen changed its name to the Mission to Seafarers to better reflect the group's function, an unbiased society that cares for all who earn their living at sea. The Logo was modernised and simplified, the word changed to 'seafarer' to be gender-neutral. The angel logo no longer holds a book (Bible). The organisation states: “The Mission to Seafarers is an Anglican organisation ... The Mission offers fellowship and a warm welcome in centres where seafarers can relax away from their ships, meet local people and contact their homes, from ports around the world. The Mission provides and promotes” … “The Mission to Seafarers now has a presence in 200 ports in 50 countries worldwide. This makes us the largest sea-port-based welfare organisation in the world. We provide support to seafarers 365 days per year, regardless of their rank, nationality, gender or religion” This flag was a gift from the Mission to Seafarers Victoria at the time of the organisation's change of name from the Missions to Seamen. It was flown from the Masthead on top of the turret on the St Nicholas Seamen's Church at Flagstaff Hill from the years 2000 to around 2010. The donation of this flag signifies the ongoing association between the historical organisation and St Nicholas Seamen's Church building at Flagstaff Hill', which displays an extensive collection of furniture and furnishings from that organisation's Williamstown branch. The design on the flag is an example of several updates of the flag over the organisation's lifetime.Flag, fine linen, The Mission to Seafarers. Badge - Visit of the Prince of Wales in 1920, 1954
At the Imperial War Conference in 1917, and again at the conference of overseas Prime Ministers in 1918, King George V had foreshadowed a visit to the Dominions by his eldest son, “when peace comes”. At the end of the War, the King kept his pledge and, following on from successful visits to other countries, including the USA and West Indies in 1919, Edward Albert Christian George Andrew Patrick David, the Prince of Wales, embarked on a journey to Australia. The visit was in part to offer official thanks for the support Australia had shown Great Britain during World War I. It was also designed to strengthen the links between Australia and the Empire. The Prince of Wales arrived in Australia on board the HMS Renown in April 1920, having left England the previous month. He spent nine days in Victoria, eleven days in New South Wales, four days in Tasmania, eleven days in Western Australia, six days in South Australia and eight days in Queensland. In all, he visited 110 cities and towns across Australia.Metal badge with photo of Prince of Walesprince of wales, royal visit 1920, badge -

Image, Lord Randolf Churchill, c1864, 1864
Lord Randolph Henry Spencer-Churchill was a British statesman. He was the third son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, and his wife, Lady Frances Vane. He was the father of Winston Churchill, the future wartime Prime Minister, who wrote his father's first major biography. (wikipedia) Having served as unofficial private secretary to his father, lord lieutenant (viceroy) of Ireland from 1876 to 1880, Churchill was especially interested in the Irish problem. Though opposed to national Home Rule for Ireland, he favoured self-government on the local level and blamed shortsighted British officials for the Irish crisis of the 1880s. The majority of the Conservative Party agreed with the Liberal government’s coercion policy toward Ireland, but Lord Randolph allowed the Irish nationalists, led by Charles Stewart Parnell, to understand that the Conservatives would oppose coercion in return for Irish votes in the general election of 1885. It was said that the Liberals underwent a forced conversion to Home Rule to counteract that promise.(http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/117261/Lord-Randolph-Churchill, accessed 21 January 2014)Image of a moustached man known as Lord R. Photograph, Jim Connor, Former C.B.A. Bank, 14 Jan 2017
The Former Commonwealth Bank of Australia branch forms part of the Eltham Gateway and the Little Eltham precinct and is located near 804 Main Road, Eltham. It is a significant building and registered on the Victorian Heritage Register. The bank was built in 1878. It is a one-room, bichromatic brick building. Imagine your bank only being open for one morning a week! These were the hours of the Commercial Bank’s Eltham branch early in the 20th century and customers were quite content. The bank stored gold from the Eltham/Research mining areas. It is famous for its bullet holes. These were the result of a hold up in 1949, in which a nervous youth opened an account in the name of John Henderson, then walked to the door and spun around pulling out a pistol he fired into the cedar bench but fled empty handed and was apprehended later, receiving a two year sentence. The Bank was purchased by the Methodist Church in 1954. (The Eltham church is right adjacent). Recent uses have included a meeting room, Sunday School and Opportunity Shop. It is currently used as a storage for the Combined churches opportunity shop which is located in the United church extension beside this location. Document, Illuminated Address H. H. Smith esq
This illuminated address was given to H.H.Smith, the Warrnambool Mayor, for his work with soldiers returning to Warrnambool and district during and after World War One. On the same occasion Smith was also given an armchair by the mothers, sisters and wives of Warrnambool returning soldiers. Henry Huntingdon Smith (1857-1941) started his own bakery business in 1885, firstly near the corner of Fairy and Koroit Streets and later building his own shop at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets (Monaghans Pharmacy today). Smith was one of the most admired men in Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He was a Warrnambool Councillor from 1918 to 1937 (Mayor for two terms) and served continuously on the Warrnambool Hospital Committee for 39 years. He visited patients at the Hospital twice a week. He took a particular interest in the welfare of returning soldiers and it was said that there was not a returned man or woman whom Smith did not greet on his return to the district. Smith also was a tireless worker for the Methodist Church as an office bearer and a Sunday School teacher. Smith was also Vice President in 1937 of the first Warrnambool & District Historical Society. This document is of particular interest as it is a good example of the type of illuminated address produced during the early years of the 20th century. It also shows clearly the respect and love that Warrnambool people had for Henry Smith, a great volunteer worker in the community. This is a piece of cream-coloured parchment paper with a margin ruled in black ink and handwriting in blue and black ink surrounded by red ornamental scrolls and flourishes. The paper has an address to H.H.Smith and is followed by 74 names and the date (1920). The paper is inserted into a piece of red leather cloth. This has folded edges and an ornamental gold pattern around the front edges and a gold border around the back edges. There are two holes at the top of the folder and these have metal surrounds. The backing folder is rounded at the top edges. ‘Warrnambool, 6th December 1919. To H.H. Smith Esq., Mayor of Warrnambool – We, the Mothers, Wives and Sisters of the Returned Soldiers of this City and District wish to express to you our deepest gratitude for your unswerving devotion to Our Boys interests during your long term as Secretary of the Welcome Home Committee’ (etc etc)henry huntingdon smith, world war one, history of warrnambool -

Book, Joan and Betty Rayner: Strolling Players, 1972
The sisters were born in New Zealand. They travelled not only around Australia and New Zealand but around Europe, the British Isles and Canada in a caravan performing songs, dances and tales they collected. Often there was little scenery. They established a Theatre of Youth (T.O.Y.) near Circular Quay in Sydney and later founded the Australian Children's Theatre. Mavis Thorpe Clark (1909-1999) began her writing career as a schoolgirl. She was educated at Methodist Ladies College in Hawthorn. Her first story for children was published as a serial in The Australasian newspaper when she was 14 years old. Her first book was written when she was 18 and published in 1930. She was a prolific writer. She wrote mainly for children and teenagers, but also authored several biographies, a number of non-fiction titles, and many articles, short stories and scripts for newspaper, magazine and radio. During the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s she travelled extensively in South Australia and Western Australia gathering material for her stories. In 1967 she won the Children's Book Council of the Year award for The Min-Min which was set in outback South Australia.164p illus. Photograph, Annie Barton and Jocelyn Cerini, 1928, c1928
The photo was taken in 1928 and the young child is definately Jocelyn Francesca Cerini, elder daughter of Natale Cerini and his wife Ethel (MS: Swan). The Cerini family lived at 215 Union Road. Most likely that the photo was taken in the back garden of 215 Union Road which backs onto 11 and 13 Barton Street. Thus the houses in the background are the two houses occupied by Barton family members - No 11 and 13 Barton Street, Surrey Hills. The photo card index compiled by Jocelyn Hall (nee Cerini) identifies the elderly lady as Miss Annie Barton, sister of Rev John Barton, second minister of Wyclif Congregational Church. She was a nurse. However the age of Jocelyn (born 1922) makes it more likely that this is Mrs Annie Eliza Barton (nee Duncan), wife of the Rev John Barton and mother of James Duncan Barton, John Saxon Barton, Ida Grace Barton, Albert Edward Barton, Annie Barton and Harold Arthur Barton. Annie Eliza (Duncan) Barton was born in 1845 and died on 16 Jan 1933, which is consistent with the age of the lady pictured. By the time this photo was taken her husband, the Rev John Barton (1844-1919) had died. He was minister of the Wyclif Church in 1896 and continued in that role until 1907. After a further appointment John Barton retired and continued to worship at Wyclif, residing at 13 Barton Street. On Federation in 1901 the street name changed - it was originally Kent Street. John Barton was born in 1845 in Ainsdale, Lancashire, son of James Barton and Ann Rimmer and grew up in Formby - the name later given to No 13 Barton Street. His family appear to have remained in the UK. He married Ann Eliza Duncan in 1872 in Queensland. Of the 2 daughters who were nurses: Ida Grace Barton (b 1877) did not marry. She trained at the Homeopathic Hospital (later Prince Henry's Hospital), graduating in 1909. Annie Barton (b 1883, Geelong) trained at the Melbourne Hospital. She was Matron AANS during WW1 in charge of the Base Hospital (Military) in St Kilda Road. She married Dr John Hodgson Nattrass. She died in 1965 at Caulfield. John and Ann Eliza Barton are buried in Box Hill Cemetery - C0044.A black & white photo of an elderly lady seated in a cane chair in an outdoor setting. To one side is a young girl also seated in a chair and holding a doll; to the other side is a doll's pram containing another doll.
