Parry Collection ‘Sunbeams’ and ‘Corinella’ were two of the few ways an Australian kid could get some acknowledgement and a pat on the back from the big wide world from the 1930s through to the 1950s. The Corinella columns ran in the Sun Newspaper with puzzles, jokes and colouring competitions. Kath Farmer played the role of ‘Corinella’ for yonks and hosted annual ‘Corinella’ Parties for boys and girls aged 5 to 13 years for decades. Sunbeam Certificates were awarded to young readers for good puzzles, riddles, drawings or original stories or verses. The Sun Newspaper Sunbeams Club Envelopes and Awards, envelopes with Ginger Meggs effigy and warning for the postman to take care with the delivery; various certificates received in return for colouring competitions and puzzles submitted back to the Sun Newspaper. Flooding of the Yarra Valley, including that section of the Yarra bordering Kew and Kew East in the north and west of the municipality, was a regular occurrence. Extreme flood events of the Yarra River are recorded to have occurred in 1891, 1901, 1916, 1923 and 1934. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. While floods continued after the development of the Upper Yarra Reservoir (construction 1948-57), the regularity and extent of these inundations diminished. During the nineteenth century, the land abutting the south side of the Yarra in Kew was devoted to dairy farming. Sweenies Creek Pottery was located at 1507 Strathfieldsaye Rd, Axe Creek. Owned and run by Graham Masters, he specialises in a patented technique of low relief stoneware depicting Australian animals and landscapes. Graham Masters graduated from Bendigo Institute of Technology in 197 with a Diploma of Art and Design in Ceramics. He operated a pottery for a year in Bendigo, before working at Maldon Pottery, Maldon, Victoria, with Neville Wilson and Thomas Metcalf. This hammer was used by workers on the ski lifts to clear them of ice. The hammer was turned by the Ski Lift Company and had a long reach. It was mainly used on the Summit T-Bar and the International Poma before they had catwalks to enable easier access for maintenance. This item was donated by Douglas Zolla. He has worked in Falls Creek for over 30 years. From 1987 until 2002. Doug worked as a De-icer with the Falls Creek Ski Lifts Company. This roughing plane was used by Peter Jensen who came to Martin's Creek (35 miles north of Orbost) in 1890 having been told that Martin's Creek would be on the railway line. He was a cooper who made the casks from silver wattles. He was a Fellow of the Geological Society and a Fellow of the Linnian Society. Kate Stammers was assaulted with a baseball bat. She was knocked to the ground and hit repeatedly around the head before being thrown in the creek. She was taken to Maroondah Hospital with a 30 cm gash on the back of her head, before being transferred to the Austin Hospital for treatment for a fractured skull; and bruising to the face and the upper body.

George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigh Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek operated by Doerr Nominees Pty. Ltd. under the management of Vesna Sugden. George Shirling passed away in March 2023. Schuss was advertised as Victoria’s Official Ski Journal It was issued monthly from 1935 to 1961 except during the war when summer issues covered two months. This continued after the war, but it averaged 10 issues annually over its 25 year life. Schuss was published by the Ski Club of Victoria which had a membership of 38 Ski Clubs and demanded to be recognised as the prime authority on skiing in the state. The other 30 ski clubs with 85% of the members disagreed and the politics of skiing became heated. These clubs formed the Federation of Victorian Ski Clubs with their own journal, Ski Horizon. With the establishment of the Victorian Ski Association, Ski-Horizon published its last issue in Nov - Dec. 1955 and the role of the official journal was fully taken over by “Schuss”. This item is significant because it contains stories, images and information documenting the development of the ski industry in Victoria.The journal features stories and events chronicling developments in Victoria and internationally.
