Saunders General Store was opened in 1900, overlapping part of the Mensland and Coultons stores. It was called "The ―Melbourne Store" which referred to it being a branch of their Melbourne store.The shop was burnt down in the early 1930‘s. Arthur Scott Saunders was born in 1864 and died 3-12-1913 (49) in Orbost. He was the son of Thomas Frederick Saunders and Lucy Beard Scott. He was a Storekeeper at Orbost, a member of the early Show Committees, a Rechabite in 1893, and was a member of the Board of Guardians of the Church of England from 1894 to 1913 where he served as secretary and treasurer of the Board. He was married to Agnes Louisa Stuart Morris. She sold the business in 1919 to Mr J. H. V. Dale and left Orbost with her two daughters for East Malvern in April 1927. This is a photograph of the Saunders Family at Orbost 1888-89. It is Arthur and Agnes Saunders with their children, Beatrice, Cyril, Hilda and Vera. Died March 19, 1906 aged 87 years. A Colonist of 64 years, relict of the late William Shillinglaw and beloved mother of Phillip, Samuel, Margaret, Annie and Caroiline, Catherine Bottle (nee Shillinglaw), Sarah Aldous (nee Shillinglaw) and Elizabeth Docherty (nee Shillinglaw). Memorial Cards were commonly handed out to those friends and family paying their respects at the loss of a loved one. A duplicate is contained in the same album CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. Samuel Richardson was a sawmiller and farmer in Orbost. He built The Curlip, a wooden paddle-steamer of 9 tons gross and dimensions of 43 feet long, 10 feet wide and a depth of 3 feet, on the slipway at their Tabarra sawmill in 1890. The Ballarat Horticultural Society was established in 1859 by a group of thirteen men with the aim of establishing an association for all lovers of horticulture. There were many such societies throughout the colonies making a contribution to their communities. In May 1852 Richard Wicking and his younger brother Frederick followed their father’s footsteps, leaving England to pursue a new life in the distant colony of Port Phillip. Sailing on the maiden voyage of the 'Roxburgh Castle' a new purpose built ship for the long voyages from London to Australia. Arriving on August 28th 1852, having paid their own fares they were "Unassisted Passengers". The brothers spent two years in Melbourne. He spent some tome in Ballarat and became a prominent community member involved in many areas.The Richardson family was one of the very early settler families to establish themselves in the Orbost district. This snagging team is on the Brodribb River, east of Orbost. The Brodribb bridge can be seen in the background of the Photograph. The Snowy River was used for commercial navigation after 1880 and extensive de-snagging A shipping company was formed in 1880, poling barges upstream until the removal of large trees and branches that had fallen into the river was carried out to make the river upstream of Marlo easier to navigate. "The snaggers played an important part in making the river free for transport. By 1880 Captain Collins, R McNair engineer, J McNair and the two Winchesters were at work with a punt on the Snowy and Brodribb. Mr. Jim Winchester took charge soon after. Early snaggers were Johnston, J Renton, Nat Lynch, John Drew, Hatton, J Scott and Harry Wilkinson. The system used was to use a tree on the river bank as a lever and with heavy manila ropes, slowly to haul the snags out. They were piled up around a tree and burned when dry. The snaggers lived in a row of cottages in Snaggers’ Lane." (info. This book was prepared for the Buchan School centenary. In the Buchan District itinerant teaching was conducted in buildings with log walls and a bark roof typical of the mid 19th century. Not until 1878 was the first State school built on the same general site as the present school, on the Orbost Rd, ⅓ of a mile from the bridge over the Buchan River. This original school building must have been constructed from high quality timber, because it still serves as the shelter pavilion. On 11th of July 1878 William Scott opened the first school of approximately 40 pupils ranging from Grade 1 - 8. A larger weatherboard school was erected in 1914. A residence was provided for the HT in 1934 and in 1956 a second classroom erected and attached to the 1914 building. Unfortunately, all records of the Committee were lost in a fire when the homestead of Alex Cameron, then serving as Committee Secretary, was burnt to the ground, but it is well known to local citizens that Frank Moon, local prospector, explorer and discoverer of the famous Buchan Limestone Caves, attended school at SS1905 Buchan. Originally presented to the St Kilda 14ft Sailing Club in memory of Hon Life Member, Past Commodore Charles Marshall of the Royal St Kilda Yacht Club and long time President and Honorary Life Member of the 14ft Sailing Club. It was first won season 1954-1955 by Noel Brooke skippering the 14-footer dinghy Charles Marshall. On the disbanding of the Dinghy Club in 1966, the trophy was re-donated to the RMYS for competition in the Off-the–beach Heron Class, First won by A. Neale with Gypsy. On the decline of the Heron class it was then re-allocated 1970-71 for the Gwen 12 Class to be first won by Geoffery and Phillip Hughes with Concorde II. Season 1975-76 it was allocated for a combined division event over three heats to be won by Hugh Kesterton with Cygnet. Later it was allocated for 1st, 2nd and 3rd divisions aggregate over the Watts, Bennell and Dick Lean races based on the VYC handicap system. Jonathan Binns Were (1809-1885) was born in Somerset, England on 25 April 1809. Before he migrated to Australia in 1839, he worked with colonial merchants and bankers Collins & Co. in Plymouth. Initially trading under his own name, he formed Were & Co. with his brother George and his brother-in-law, Robert Stevenson Dunsford, then, after 1861, JB Were & Son. Were’s were importers, exporters and agents for shipping, land, cattle, sheep and wool; gold brokers and buyers (after 1851); and share dealers (after 1853). Were went bankrupt twice in 1843 and 1857, the former connected with his association with Henry Dendy and the Brighton subdivision. Were lived in Brighton at Moorabbin House and represented Brighton in the Legislative Assembly in 1856-57. In 1865 Were became the first chairman of the Melbourne Stock Exchange; he was the first president of the Chamber of Commerce and served on the board of many public and private institutions and companies. He was Port Phillip’s first Justice of the Peace; and organiser of the 1881 Melbourne Exhibition. James Albon, far right, built a bowling green at his home on the corner of Mont Albert Road and Wilson Street (later occupied by the convent). This green was so popular with his friends that he organised the formation of a bowling club at the corner of Montrose and Wilson Streets. Mr John Kendrick Blogg, wearing the white hat, is standing in the doorway. Earliest club records date from 1916. This was the original club-house; it was rebuilt in 1922/23 using interlocking blocks as recommended by Walter Burley-Griffin. This was quite an innovative design at the time. In turn cream brick buildings replaced this building in the 1950s. The Surrey Hills Bowls Club disbanded in 1995. Our original is framed copy donated by the Surrey Hills Bowls Club (with a spare copy and negative). Someone from the club has the original. Thre is also a frames portrait of James Albon the 1st president in the collection. (NB/ Duplicate = 1813; No.1943 is from the Bowling Club). David Frazer (1966- ) David Frazer is an Australian artist who works in painting, wood engraving, etching, lithography and bronze. Born in Victoria, David Frazer graduated from the Phillip Institute of Technology, Melbourne with a Fine Art degree specialising in painting. In 1996 he achieved an Honours degree from Monash University specialising in Printmaking and in 2000, gained his Master of Arts. In 2002, David was awarded the Keith Wingrove Bookplate Design Award and in 2007, he was a major prizewinner at the International Print Biennial in Guanlan, China and a featured Australian artist on the ABC’s documentary series ‘Artist at Work’. Colonel Sir Alfred Kemsley's reply to the opening speech delivered by Lieutenant General Sir Phillip Bennett KBE, AO, DSO when he unveiled the Memorial Plaque and opened the Donovan Joynt VC Club at Puckapunyal on 23 March 1983. Sir Alfred talks about his long friendship with Donovan Joynt, beginning with the battle in France in which Joynt won his VC, and acknowledging the difficulty he had in persuading Joynt to be memorialised by this project at Puckapunyal. He also cited Joynt's involvement with Legacy, which as a foundation member and an early Melbourne Legacy President himself Kemsley would have been aware. Together with his friend Donovan Joynt, Kemsley became one of the most committed advocates for the creation of a Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road as a 'worthy' memorial to Victoria’s 'unparalleled efforts during the Great War'. He played an active role in the defeat of a counter-proposal for an Anzac Square in Spring Street.
