Melbourne Legacy
Letter, Legacy Archives, 1978
These letters from 1978, record the first known attempts by Melbourne Legacy to preserve and store their history and what "The Wardens" of the archives believed was the most appropriate way to proceed with the project. Legatees Brian Armstrong and Frank Doolan were appointed by the Board of Management to scope the work to establish and archive as 'The Wardens'. They mention in their report to the BOM that many original files were lost in a fire 'many years ago' and they had collected material from many sources. They felt that a proper storage facility and indexing was required and were not able to complete those tasks. It would appear most of their work remained in their envelopes and storage system until the Victorian Collections archive was created. Came from an envelope labelled 'P2 Archives Origin' in red pen as per the archive system used by the original archive.Significant in that the Board of Melbourne Legacy understood and valued the importance of preserving and documenting the history of Melbourne Legacy. A record that Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong had done considerable work at creating the initial archive for Legacy in 1978.Two letters about the original attempt to create an archive. 00456.1 Copy of a letter typed on Legacy A4 letterhead, dated 7 February 1978, to the Legacy secretary from Legatees Frank Doolan and Brian Armstrong. 00456.2 Letter typed on quarto Legacy letterhead, dated 10 March 1978, from the secretary advising their letter had been tabled at the Board Meeting.00456.1. Melbourne Legacy
Document - Speech, The Origin and Growth of the Legacy Movement in Australia. (H51), 1967
A photocopy of an article in the 'Victorian Historical Magazine', 149th Issue August 1967. It was an account of a speech by Legatee Ian Anderson to the Historical Society on 23 May 1967. Legatee Anderson was president of Melbourne Legacy Club in 1964. This is a very good quality account of details of Legacy up to the 1960s. The article outlines the key figures and events in the creation of Legacy in 1923. He mentions 8 of the members at the founding meeting in September 1923 were from the 24th Battalion. The name 'Legacy' was suggested by L/ Frank Selleck. Also the first two years of Legacy focused on the rehabilitation of returned servicemen and finding them work. It was L/ Frank Doolan that proposed the 'real field for the movement's work lay in the care, guidance and encouragement of the families of those comrades who, through death, were themselves no longer there to give those benefits, and that as the children of deceased ex-servicemen were growing up, the cases were increasing in which some deputy was needed to take up among them the work for their deceased fathers, and to act virtually as a guardian or sponsor with the help and advice our dead comrade would have given.' It mentions the Central Liaison Committee, the Co-ordinating Council, the dates of the formation of other clubs, the Code of Legacy, the residences, the annual demonstrations, also the camps and classes provided for children. He quotes L/ Stan Savige in a speech to the Annual Conference in 1950 and also part of the speech given to farewell L/ Savige after his death. The notation H51 in blue pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A highly detailed account of the formation and evolution of Legacy between 1923 and 1967.White A4 photocopy of an article about Legacy published in the Victorian Historical Magazine x 6 pages.Handwritten H51 in blue pen. Photograph, 17th April 1919
On 17th April 1919 a stock train travelling north crashed head-on with a goods train coming in the opposite direction. The driver thought he had been given the all-clear to proceed into Sunbury and it was only when the train was approaching the Macedon Street bridge that he saw the red light and it was too late. The accident caused damage to rolling stack and disruption on the Bendigo and Maryborough lines. The train coming from Bendigo smashed onto the platform at Sunbury. The driver of the stock train was thrown under the van and suffered a broken arm and facial injuries. The fireman was thrown clear of the tracks. A local Sunbury doctor treated them before they were taken by a casualty train to hospital. A crew from Melbourne came to Sunbury to repair the damage. The track was cleared by that afternoon. This rail crash is one of a number that have happened in and near Sunbury over the years.A black and white photograph with a cream border, of a goods train smash at a railway siding. The carriages have 'jack-knifed'. Four men are on the tracks looking at the damage while a number of onlookers are surveying the damage from a footbridge. There are boxes of rabbit carcasses in crates stacked in the foreground.rail crashes, sunbury -
