The Australian Estates Company Ltd. Coat of Arm Certificate
May have been given to The Australian Estates Company in the 1970's when sold to CSR or Elders.Bronze framed certificate coat of arms with smaller frame below explaining coat of arms.The shield shows the Southern Cross (being the Arms of Victoria) but on a white background to indicate wool and to avoid being identical with the Victoria Arms (which have a blue background). The inner shield shows the conventional way of indicating estates with green and gold squares. The sword is the sword of St Paul, indicating the London activities of the company. The Shorthorn Bull and Merino Ram explain themselves, as does the sugar cane. The helmet and decoration above are conventional, green and gold being chosen to indicate land and the wealth derived therefrom. -

Post card of the Stawell Shire Hall built 1866. The Shire Hall in Longfield Street Stawell has seen many changes over time. The building originally had a brick facade as seen in this photo. The post card also shows the changes in vegetation around the building. In front of the two arched front windows of the building are two tall Dracaena's possible planted in c 1890's. The decorative fence was not in very early photographs of the building but appears in photographs around c 1890. This photograph is of Main Street Stawell looking East around c 1920's. The photo was taken from just below Main & Wimmera Street corner. On the left side is the two story Post Office building. The photograph shows the telegraph poles in the street. Also Copley Post Office Hotel 1912- 22 and other business. On the road are a few people one pushing a trolly, one on a bike and two people in a horse drawn cart. Photograph, Log Cabin c 1930's with Iron roof
Log Cabin built by Mr. J. Wharrie c 1930’s. Originally the Log cabin had a bark roof. The roof was replaced with iron. The home is located in Darlington Road Stawell. The Wharrie family lived in the cabin for many years during the 1940's and owned a doll factory. Black & white photograph depicting a home built of logs with a lattice porch way, stone chimney's and iron roof. On the iron roof is a weather vane decorated on top by a carriage and 2 horses. Photograph, Deep Lead Pioneers Memorial c 1936
The memorial was erected in c 1936 by the public to the pioneers of Deep Lead District. The memorial was to commemorate the early pioneers of Deep Lead. The bronze tablet depicts two miners at work, one operating the cradle while the other using the shovel. Behind the two men and partly framing the design, is the windlass set in a fork of a tree. On each side of the main tablature are two figures of goats, one a "Billy goat" the other a "nanny goat". The bronze sculpture is set on a pedestal of Grampian freestone, which is placed on the two steps of granite. The whole memorial is surrounded by an ornate stone fence. The bronze sculpture work was executed by Mr. S. J. Hammond of Melbourne while the stone work was carved and erected by Mr. G. Robson, of Stawell. The shire engineer Mr. C.W.C. The first Housing Commission homes of brick and tiled roof built after WW2 in Stawell Dawson Street c 1950's. Also in the file a Newspaper clipping from News, Saturday, October 11. 1947. "George Mitchell Square" the first Housing Commission homes built in Stawell. George Mitchell was a member of Borough Council for 40 years and Mayor for 4 years. The housing estate was named in his honor. The architects "Buchannan Laird & Buchanan Geelong.Black and white photograph of a street scene. Residence Fountainhead Brewery Armstrong's Est. c 1872. The rear view photograph shows a more recent renovated building. Some evidence of demolition to rear of building (servants stairs etc.) Following notes taken from information in album 9 - "Compare earlier photos and note balcony etc. Later views, This photo early 2003. Owing to timber decay balcony was removed for safety. Finances permitting complete balcony will be replaced. Twin columns and iron lace are not original. Early description mentions statues in "niches" beside door. Female statue left is original. White pedestal at left was male stature damaged by a falling tree. Both statues were fountains." Two white columns at the entrance with decorative iron work support the roof of the porch with 2 white chairs and a table on top. The second photo show the back view of the two story building with a single story building attached that has a tin roof. Photograph, Mr. W. Membrey's Blacksmith Shop in Patrick Street. Stawell c1800's
W. Membrey Blacksmith Shop in Patrick Street beside the sale yards which later became the Technical School Gold Reef Campus. W. Membrey died when young leaving a large family. The business was then rented to Mr. G. Brehaut for 12/6 (twelve shillings six pence) per week. The Membrey family lived in Skene St. Stawell for many years. Notes record that a copy was make by Mark Dadswell, Stawell. Also the notes record in 1996 a copy was made and donated to the Society by Melbourne Museum. 76.1 - V.W. Membrey blacksmith at Marnoo. Donated by Alan Membrey June 2003 Beecroft, NSW.Sepia photograph depicting W. Membrey Black Smith shop. Standing in front of the wooden building are 10 men and 3 young boys. W. Membrey is holding a horse in the door way with 2 other horses either side of the building. A timber cart is to the left of the photograph. W. Membrey Black Smith is written on the front of the building W. Membrey General Smith & Farrier is on the side of the building. There are 3 copies or duplicates of the original photo, one small and 2 large. The second black and white photo (76.1) is of V.W. Membrey Blacksmith & Horseshoer. Photograph, St. Patrick’s Catholic Church
St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and surrounding buildings 1880's. The church was opened in 1873. The construction is of Black Ranges faced with Grampians Freestone. The bell tower is 70 feet high, and the walls are 30 inches thick. The church was opened on 30th March 1873 by the Bishop of Melbourne, the Right Reverend Dr. Goold. The Historical Society have a programme for this opening - tickets for front seats were 10/- each. The sanctuary was added during 1927 as was a white marble altar which was the gift of a parishioner. Much earlier - In 1865 - a wooden Catholic Church was built on this street near the Court House site. The wooden building became too small for the congregation and this church was commenced before the end of 1869. Sepia photograph of St Patrick's Catholic Church and surrounding buildings.
