It was the service station for General Motors products as well as the official R.A.C.V. service station. Robert Pullar Cameron was a Shire Councillor for many years. He married Penuel Hossack and had a family of James, Flora, Penuel and Alex.This item is an example of the book-keeping of an Orbost business in the early 20th century. The State Governor Sir Rohan Delacombe and Lady Delacombe visited the Shire of Eltham where they were entertained to a civic luncheon by the Shire President Cr. L. E. Clarke and councilors at the Panton Hill hotel and made a tour of the shire. Sir Rohan opened Shillinglaw Cottage at Eltham Town Park.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' John TURNBULL was a prominent citizen of Sandridge/Port Melbourne. He started as a baker in Bay St then moved to the corner of Rouse and Nott Streets where he ran his baking business until leasing the premises to various licensees as The Auld Reekie Hotel. The Sands & McDougall Directory of 1880 shows Turnbull owned this store in Rouse Street, next door to the hotel. He served on Council for 15 years with one term as Mayor, 1877-78. John TURNBULL died on 13 March 1889. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. There are 6.2 acres of wetlands near the cemetery entrance.466-27: Charles Grayden: Charles arrived from England on the "Robert Ben" about 1835. On arrival he went bush. He later married Margaret Larkie in St. James' old Cathedral, Melbourne on 15th September, 1842. They arrived at Hastings in 1860 then came to Phillip Island to live on Block 33, Newhaven in the year 1867. He died 26th January 1905 aged 85. Margaret died 21st June 1907 aged 81. She is also buried in this grave. 466-28: Joseph Bauer: Joseph was the son of our first owner of the Isle of Wight Hotel. His father came to the Island in 1870 and bought a small private house, then added to it in the style of a Swiss House. It became one of the most comfortable hotels in Victoria.
