The donor, Ada Barclay, was a member of the Flying Angel Club, Missions to Seamen (which is now Mission to Seafarers) in Townsville and Sydney. One of the badges connects her with the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild in Queensland. The Sanctuary Window and other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village are part of the St Nicholas Seamen’s Church Williamstown Collection. The window is dedicated to the seamen from the Merchant Navy and was organised by a group of women, some of whom were also in the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, dedicated to the care of seafarers across the world. The Sanctuary Window above the altar in Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village's St Nicholas Seamen’s Church’ is titled "Christ Showing the Helmsman the Way". This round, stained glass window was originally installed in the St Nicholas Seamen's Church at 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria. The window was donated to St Nicholas Seamen’s Church as a memorial to the members of the Merchant Navy whose lives were lost in the Second World War, 1939-1945. The donor was the Williamstown Lightkeepers Auxiliary, an independent ladies association working with the Williamstown Missions to Seamen. Some of the members of this Auxiliary were also members of the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild. This set of badges is significant historically for its connection to the Merchant Navy organisation, the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild and the Flying Angels Club. Through this connection, the badges are also connected to the history of the St Nicholas Mission to Seamen's Church in Williamstown, established in 1857 to cater for the physical, social, and spiritual needs of seafarers. It originated in Bristol, England when a Seamen's Mission was formed in 1837. The connection of this set of badges to the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild and what is now the Mission to Seafarers, highlights the strong historical and continuing community awareness of the life of people at sea, their dangers and hardships, and their need for physical, financial, spiritual and moral support. Set of four metal and enamel badges pinned in a vertical row to a red ribbon. Each badge is connected with seafarers. Three badges have a crown on the top of a circular badge, a wreath around the circle and the letters "MN" in the centre. One of these also has "Australia" below the circle. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interestHelen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. Circa 1870, “Estey”, American-made, small Harmonium, (commonly known as a Gospel Organ). Initially purchased by Mr John Box, This example folds up into a small wooden case. It was often borrowed and could frequently be seen on the roadside, waiting to be picked up by horse and cart for delivery to a place of worship, often a local hall or private home. This organ was donated to the Baptist Church in the 1920s, from the estate of John Box, and was in constant use. This 'Estey' harmonium belonged to the local Bentleigh Baptist Church, Vickery Street, Bentleigh. It was often borrowed for delivery to a place of worship, often a local hall. There was also a “Methodist Mission to Chinese”, located in Lydia Street, Bentleigh, where the Methodist religion was taught to those interested Chinese. In 1886 the Wesleyan Methodist Church celebrated the fiftieth jubilee of the establishment of the Wesleyan Methodist Association in Britain. The Association was one of several off-shoots of the Methodist Church, which had been established by John Wesley from the 1730s. Methodism stressed evangelism and a closer association with God. The focus on fiftieth anniversaries by the church originated in Leviticus 25:10: ‘And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubilee unto you...’. In 1902 the various off-shoots of Methodism in Australia united to form the Methodist Church of Australasia. In 1977 the church became part of the Uniting Church. The Wesleyan Methodist Church which exists in Australia today is actually a branch of the Wesleyan Methodist Church of America, introduced to Australia during World War II. The Sunday School Scholars Anniversary Celebration was to be held on 1 December 1934, but due to an abnormal storm on the day before it was postponed to 8th December 1934. 15000 Sunday school scholars and teachers marched through the streets of Melbourne to demonstrate the strength of youth organisations associated with the Churches. The march ended at the Treasury Gardens where a thanksgiving service was held, more than 35,000 people attended. St George's Church of England held services in Mavho Street, Bentleigh from 1926 to 1984. A new Church was built in 1955. In 1996 the church property was divided into two lots. On one lot was the church which was converted into apartments. The Baptist Church was built in 1881 in Tucker Road, in 1916 on land donated by Henry Box, a local market gardener. The wooden Church was moved to the to Vickery Street Bentleigh, the current site of the Bentleigh Baptist Church . Methodist Church, Centre Road. The first church building on the site was built of timber in 1850. In 1865, the wooden church building was sold and a new brick church was built, this building was expanded over the years to accomodate an ever increasing congregation. In 1928 the parish opened yet another new brick church - which still stands today (2022). This pair of kneeling rails was part of the original furnishings of the St Nicholas' Mission to Seamen's Church at 139 Nelson Place, Williamstown, Victoria. A kneeling rail is part of the furniture of a church and is used during religious prayer, assisting the person to be in the position of kneeling. A padded kneeling mat or cushion would also be provided for comfort. THE MISSIONS TO SEAMEN (Brief History: for more, see our Reg. In Victoria the orgainsation began in Williamstown in 1857. It was as a Sailors’ Church, also known as ‘Bethel’ or the ‘Floating Church’. Its location was an old hulk floating in Hobson’s Bay, Port of Melbourne. It soon became part of the Missions to Seamen, Victoria. In the year 2000 the organisation, now named Mission to Seafarers, still operated locally in Melbourne, Portland, Geelong and Hastings. The Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild was formed in 1906 to support the Missions to Seamen in Melbourne and other centres such as Williamstown. Two of the most significant ladies of the Guild were founder Ethel Augusta Godfrey and foundation member Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (who established a branch of the Guild in Warrnambool in 1920). The Guild continued its work until the 1960s. In 1943 a former Williamstown bank was purchased for the Missions to Seaman Club. The chapel was named St Nicholas’ Seamen’s Church and was supported by the Ladies’ Harbour Lights Guild, the Williamstown Lightkeepers’ Auxiliary and the League of Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Friends. It ceased operation in 1966. A Missions to Seamen Chapel and Recreation Room was a significant feature of ports during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. It seemed appropriate for Flagstaff Hill to include such a representation within the new Maritime Village, so the Melbourne Board of Management of Missions to Seamen Victoria gave its permission on 21st May 1979 for the entire furnishings of the Williamstown chapel to be transferred to Flagstaff Hill. The St Nicholas Seamen’s Church was officially opened on October 11, 1981 and closely resembles the Williamstown chapel. They show that people of the 1800s and 1900s cared about the seafarers’ religious, moral, and social welfare, no matter what the religion, social status or nationality. This commemorative plaque was made for the round, stained glass window titled “Christ showing the helmsman the way” that was originally installed at the St Nicholas Seamen’s Church in Williamstown. The window was donated as a memorial to the members of the Merchant Navy whose lives were lost in the Second World War, 1939-1945. This religious almanac with biblical imagery listed the Churches of Christ in Australasia and scripture readings for a calendar year of 1892. The almanac was produced and updated annually to reflect current information. The Churches of Christ in Australia is a Reformed Restorationist denomination. Congregations in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales were established by individuals who travelled to these colonies to pursue employment opportunities, elsewhere in Australia Churches of Christ congregations were established as missionary initiatives. Churches of Christ in Victoria began with the arrival of the Ingram and Picton families from England who established regular meetings in Prahran and officially constituted a congregation in 1855. In Warrnambool plans were drawn up in 1883 for the erection of a Church of Christ at 12 Spence Street. The church was opened in 1885 with visiting pastors until a resident minister, A. J. Fisher, was appointed in 1915. This church was closed early in the 21st century when a new church, Gateway Church of Christ, was opened in Ragland Parade in Warrnambool. A rare survival of social and spiritual ephemera related to the Christian worship throughout Australia during the late nineteenth century.
