Demolition of the former Shire of Eltham Offices, 895 Main Road, Eltham, 12 August 1996. These Mediterranean Cypress Pine trees are part of the original Shillinglaw farm and stood in front of the cottage before it was relocated in 1966-67 to make way for the new Shire Office building. Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee was celebrated enthusiastically across the British Empire. Commemorative medallions were produced and distributed by the Victorian government and many local governments. Two medallions produced for this occasion by the Shire of Grenville are in the LDHS collection. One of these is believed to have been presented to schoolgirl Mabel Cluff, of Linton State School. The medallion which was presented to Mabel Cluff was donated to LDHS in 1995. Acquisition of this medallion is acknowledged in "Society Notes", Number 118, July 1995, but donor's name is not recorded. For reasons unknown these two medallions were not catalogued until 2016.Round, gilt bronze medallion, on the obverse two conjoined faces of Queen Victoria, one as a young girl, the other as an older woman. The phrase "Queen Victoria 60 Years of Reign" and the dates "1837-1897" around the perimeter. "Stokes and Sons" imprinted in tiny letters on the extreme lower edge. The Eltham Library was located at the southern end of the newly constructed southern wing of the Shire Offices at 895 Main Road. The first dedicated library in the shire was the Children's Library built by the Eltham War Memorial Trust (now the Eltham War Memorial Hall). Funds were raised by volunteers to purchase books, the land and construct the building. This library initially opened in the Eltham Public Hall on the corner of Main Road and Arthur Street around 1948. The Children’s Library building was opened in 1961 but the transfer to the Eltham Council of the War Memorial Trust land and buildings in 1965 saw the closure of the children's library, which held over 2,000 books that were then transferred to all the schools in the shire which had participated in the monthly book exchange of boxes of books by use of the railways, bus companies and private cars. In late 1966 the children’s library service was integrated into the Heideberg Regional Library Service and the building was officially renamed the Eltham War Memorial Hall. The Brinkkotter house in Dudley Street became the first of the general library services in Eltham with shelving from the old Heidelberg City Library, staff borrowed form the Heidelberg Library and some use of the 1941 Shire Office in Main Road. By 1971 the 1964 Shire Office had the southern extension added and the Library was located on the lower level with Engineering and Planning on the level above. By 1986 this library was experiencing overcrowding from lack of space and equipment needs. With Federal Government assistance, Council was able to design and build a new library which was located in the Eltham Common and opened in May 1994.Background workings for the funding of a Public Hall at Eltham. The funding was provided by public subscription and the money loaned to Council to build the hall. The hall was part of the new Eltham Shire offices located at the corner of Main Road and Arthur Street. This photograph was taken on the first 'Australia Day', held 30 July 1915. Across Australia, this day was set aside for a nation-wide fundraising effort for the Patriotic Relief Fund, raising money to assist wounded soldiers returning to Australia during WWI. Other days had been set aside to raise funds for specific nations, e.g. 'Belgian Day' had been held earlier in 1915.. In Linton Australia Day 1915 was celebrated with a jumble sale, raffles, and collection of donations. There was also a stall near the Shire Offices, attended by a group of girls dressed as Red Cross nurses, which sold flowers, postcards, toys etc. People identified in photograph: Standing slightly behind the group - Mr Smith (Alf J. Eltham Plans £2.5m Community Centre Over Next 15 Years THE people of Eltham have drawn up a plan to make their township a model community centre in the next 15 years. And yesterday the Chief Secretary (Mr Rylah) inspected the plan at the Eltham shire offices before declaring it open for public inspection In the picture (right) Mr. Rylah (centre) is shown inspecting the new plan with town planner and former councillor, Mr. Howard Bartlett, and the shire president, Cr. C. Pelling. The result of six years' work by shire officers, the plan provides for a business centre, public buildings and recreational reserves. The shire council expects that £2,500,000 will be invested by Government departments, banks, private firms and sporting bodies to implement the plan. 500 Car Park A feature of the business centre will be a quadrangle car park surrounded by shops, and with parking space for 500 cars. The public buildings will include new municipal offices, a public auditorium, a library and meeting rooms. The council plans to realign the course of Diamond Creek near the town to provide extra land for playing fields. Three Ovals The plan proposes three ovals, including improvements to an existing one, as well as a 50-metre Olympic swimming pool, tennis courts and bowling greens. In the 15 years which the shire council hopes to carry out the plan, the shire population of 18,000 is expected to increase two and a half times. Opening the display of maps and a model, Mr. Rylah said he commended the shire council's invitation to the citizens to suggest improvements to the plan. Although only about twenty inches deep, the soil of this ancient volcano, its crater lost under subsequent weathering, was rich, deserving the name of "Garden Hill". Now native trees are taking over again. [from EDHS Newsletter No. 104, September 1995:] ALAN MARSHALL SCULPTURE. In our last Newsletter brief mention was made of the bronze sculpture of Alan Marshall outside the Eltham Library. Sculptor Marcus Skipper has now completed the installation of his almost life-size work. The setting and location are ideal and Marcus has really captured the typical Marshall character. It has attracted much favourable comment since its completion. Most members are generally familiar with Alan's life and work but for those not so familiar and for the sake of the record we include these brief biographical details. Alan Marshall, A.M., O.B.E., Hon.LL.D. (1902-1984) was born at Noorat, Victoria and became one of Australia's most famous authors. His association with the Eltham area began in 1920 when he started his first job as a junior clerk at the Eltham Shire Offices, Kangaroo Ground. In the 1940s he spent some time living at Research. From 1955 he lived in Eltham for nearly 20 years. Disabilities resulting from polio as a young child did not prevent a wide range of experiences. Alan's occupations have been listed as clerk, night watchman, fortune teller, freelance journalist and author. He has been patron of many disadvantaged Children's Societies. Alan's books are numerous and include novels, short stories, children's books, history and travel. Among the best known are his autobiographies "I Can Jump Puddles" and "This is the Grass". Others include "These are My People", "Ourselves Writ Strange", "People of the Dreamtime", "The Gay Provider" and "Wild Red Horses". Lot 20 of Subdivision of Portion 13, Section 4 of the Parish of Nillumbik in the County of Evelyn was located on the southern side of Henry street in Little Eltham North, where the current Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church is situated. It became the location of the Eltham Rechabite Hall. In 1893 a new hall was built and further enlarged in 1919. At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941. The man in the photograph is Alan McKenzie a long time resident of Bulla. He was a guest at the official opening in Bulla of the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden on 12th December 1999. The garden is in the grounds of the former Shire of Bulla council offices. Series consists of a large collection (over 1150) of negatives of scenes, activities and staff of the Shire of Eltham. Many of the films were taken for publicity purposes and necessarily cover a broad range of topics. The films or individual strips have been organised into Scenes, Activities and Staff groupings, however there are many overlaps. 1) Scenes includes: Parks and Roads including Alistair Knox Park, Tree Planting, Trees and Flowers, general Shire Scenes. The date has been selected to coincide with the time when the gardens are likely to be at their best. The Central Victorian Goldfields area has been selected because it offers a wide range of gardens open to the public. From this range we have chosen three gardens which we think will be of great interest to members and their families and friends. These are the gardens: • "Buda", Castlemaine One of Victoria's most famous historic gardens. The mansion which was the home of the Leviny family for 118~ years is also open for inspection. • "Badger's Keep", Chewton This is a cottage garden (complete with 100 year old cottage) with a great diversity of plants. • "The Springs", Sedgwick A country garden also with a great array of plants The cost of the bus is $9.00 for adults and $5.00 for children. There is an additional charge for entry to the gardens, $2.00 each for "Badger's Keep" and "The Springs": for "Buda" it is $3.00, $1.50 for pensioners and $1.00 for children Each of the gardens has plants for sale. Bring your own picnic lunch. Please be at the Eltham Shire Offices by 8.15 a.m. so we can leave promptly at 8.30. To book for this trip complete the attached form and return the appropriate fare. Those who went thoroughly enjoyed the historic garden and mansion at "Buda" and two other excellent gardens at "Badger's Keep" and "The Springs". The popularity of this trip warrants a repeat performance.
