Yields information about the incidents/accidents that can occur on a street tramway system - collisions resulting in the rare virtual total demolition of a tram in Ballarat.Newspaper clipping from The Courier, front page, Thursday, 17 September 1970 with photo, of the collision between No. 20 and a semi trailer the previous evening in Victoria St. that wrecked No. 20. Gives quotes from eye witness, gives name of tram driver, Ian Maxwell Tierney, who jumped from tram before the collision, said the only passenger who was not injured was Miss Maree Bernadette Matthews about 17 of Reid St. Ballarat and the truck driver Ronald Frederick Cox 35 of Hickman St. was trapped in the cabin of the truck for some time. Accident happened about 7.30pm. Photo (see also item 1089 for print) shows by a white arrow where the woman was sitting. Demonstrates the Museum's ticketing systems and ongoing production of tickets.Block of 200 tickets - purple ink on off white paper, denomination 30c, lettered A 108801 to A 109000, headed Ballarat Tourist Tramway. On rear in purple ink are details of the Ballarat Tourist Tramway operating details, contact address and that it is operated by a volunteer organisation. The 200 tickets have been stapled onto a heavy cardboard back with a heavy metal staple. The tickets are in the style of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria tramway tickets. Original block A 001 to A200 added 30/6/2004 - from archive holdings. Tickets in use as adult fare from 1/11/1975 to 31/7/1977 and as child fares from 1/7/1978 to 31/10/1985. Child single ticket for while, late 80's to 30/6/1991. Last block issued 1/1990. Ticket issue book shows that the first ticket/block? was collected for the archives - 10/9/1975. Set of five maps prepared by the SEC/Transport Regulation Board? reviewing the option for Ballarat bus routes after the closure of the Ballarat tramway system. Based on SEC drawing No. BA-D1-2222, drawn at 1" = 20 chains. Shows streets in Ballarat and Sebastopol areas. 1775.1 - tram lines shown in heavy blue lines, with grey and yellow (actual operating bus routes at the time?) routes marked out. A red dashed line defines the general built up area. 1775.2 - "PLAN A" - shows various routes in different colours for Davis, Sproule, Hick ex Whkes, Lyons, Braybrooks and Witkins services and existing tram lines. 1775.3 - "Plan B" 1775.4 - "Plan C" 1775.5 - "Plan D" 1175.6 - Plan as above, but showing existing bus routes, tram routes and suggested tram routes. "The ESCo worked out its procedures from its own experience. A "pay as you enter" system was used on city-bound cars, and a "pay as you leave" system on outward-bound cars. On Sundays during busy periods this was reversed on the Gardens lines, but conductors were still required on this line to cope with the heavy summer holiday traffic. Trams 1 to 18 were altered by altering the end seating, placing gates on doorways and "pay as you enter" and "pay as you leave" signs. Once on board, passengers paid their coins into a farebox mounted behind the driver, which was fitted with glass windows and mirrors to enable the driver to see the coins slide into the box - a form of "moral check on passengers". Regular passengers could buy pink or green celluloid tokens at a discount price, to save the motorman having to issue tickets and give change." Demonstrates aspects of Safeworking on the Ballarat Tramway system from 1960 to c1936 when replaced by electric signs. Yields Information about the operation of Ballarat's trams and safeworking procedures.Cast brass item with a flat part recessed section with the words "BALLARAT TRAMWAYS SECTION STAFF" cast into the surface and a flat section underneath, flush with the outside edges in which the words "CARLTON ST. CAR SHED LOOP." stamped in. Has an open rounded end which forms a handle or a point where it could be hung on a peg. The part with the words "CAR SHED LOOP" appears to have been ground down and a previous location name taken out and replaced. Used a means of authorising a tramcar to have sole use of the track between the named points to avoid head on collisions. Safeworking object - known as a section staff. Not known when made, but in use until the introduction of the electric signalling in the mid 1930's by the SEC.
