Document, Sandhurst Club History, This is a copy of a presentation at the May meeting of the Bendigo Historical Society 2009. Just 7 years after gold was found on Bendigo Creek, five gentlemen gathered together in October/November 1858 to wine and dine and chat no doubt the challenges of living in a 'frontier' town.Their chats became regular and The Bendigo Club came into being. Note that at this stage the club used the name ''Bendigo''.The five men who met late 1858 to start a club are:VINCENT PYKE from Somerset; CRAWFORD MOLLISON from Sussex; LACHLAN MCLACHLAN from Sussex; ANDREW THUNDER from Ireland; ROBERT F. HOWARD FROM Liverpool, England. The ups and downs of gold output mirrored the starts and stops of the Club. Mrs Annie Sterling was the wife of the Reverend John Gray Sterling, a Presbyterian minister who was born in Belfast Northern Ireland in 1858 and was ordained in Rockhampton in 1881. Mr Meek was the first person to build a house in Peterborough prior to 1858. Born in England in 1815 and came to Australia in 1838. this catalogue showcases his artistic skill. The art exhibition was curated by Joan Luxemburg as part of her PHD.Mr Meek is credited with building the first house in Peterborough. Bendigo Advertiser "The way we were" from 1999. Slaughter house: this photo taken in 1900 shows the slaughter house owned by William Bromley Griffiths at Grassy Flat. W.B. Griffiths established his butchering business during 1858, with just a small cash outlay, a canvas tent and a lot of courage. the business slowly grew and he opened a shop in Williamson Street in 1865.
