Schools of this era were very proud of their identity. This was particularly so in country based ones. Schools in isolated or semi isolated regions provided social cohesion and pride and community involvement that was not so inherent in schools located in larger cities. The exception here being the Greater Public Schools. Mrs Beverly Johnson nee Davis designed the school badge.This badge was worn by a local girl, who has the spirit shown by many pupils from the Mount Beauty High School that the identity of belonging to a Kiewa Valley High School is a treasured part of life for them in this regional area. Ken SEARLE (1951- ) Born Sydney, New South Wales Ken Searle worked on this commission through 1997 and 1998. Further works and sketches relating to this commission are held by the Art Gallery of Ballarat. Searle is a self-taught artist who first exhibited his paintings and drawings in the mid-1970s and is known for large, and often whimsical, paintings, of suburban and industrial areas in several Australian cities. From 1998 to 2001 Searle worked as a consultant at the school in the Aboriginal community of Papunya, Central Australia. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.Framed painting highlighting the artist's favoured aspects of Ballarat. Interested with scenes of suburbia for over twenty years, Ballarat is his first portrayal of a whole city. Searle’s view of Ballarat presents a deliberately untidy city seen from a number of viewpoints. Local scenes are portrayed no matter how pretty or garish, the subject matter providing a snap shot in time. So many drunken firefighters arrived at the blazes 150 years ago that teetotalers started up their own fire brigade. Now known for their high standards on fire grounds, Bendigo's first brigades were sometimes found wanting. Based in the Wales county of Montgomery Shire, Edward and Maureen Ann Story Jones produced crafted silver plated on pewter giftware under the range name The Silver Scenes in 1984. Well made, high quality and durable they produced items from 1984 - 2005. These items were probably gifts from visiting council representatives. Desk set of magnifying glass (0447.1) and paper knife (0447.2) with ornate handle, both sides featuring grapes and vines motifs.Both pieces are signed by hand 'MASJ © 93' (?) at top of handle. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. The Newsletter is an important record of the activities of the CMHS. Tom Sheehy, past President of CMHS, was an Historian and Author of 'Battlers tamed a Sandbelt'.A4 paper printed both sides x1. An early colour postcard of a brook scene in Marysville. The original photograph was taken by Nicholas John Caire in 1906. This is one of a series of postcards of photographs taken by socialite photographer Nicholas John Caire. N.J. Caire had a great love for the area and in the late 1800's took many photographs of Marysville and its surrounds. N.J. Caire was born in 1837 in Guernsey. He arrived in Adelaide about 1860 along with his parents who encouraged his early interest in photography. He opened a studio in Adelaide in 1867 after traveling extensively throughout the Gippsland taking photographs. After marrying in 1870 he moved to Talbot in Victoria until 1876 when he opened a studio in the Royal Arcade in Melbourne. After 1885 N.J. Caire gave up his city work and made his home in South Yarra and devoted the rest of his life to outdoor photography, specializing in the bush, the gullies and the mountains of south-eastern Victoria.
