The setting was hand painted by Lucy Shaw, (principal of Clarendon PLC 1927-1934) in 1934. The sets were sold to raise money for the school. ... Ballarat Clarendon College 1425 Sturt Street Ballarat ...From 1884 College Cups were donated by the Old Collegians Association for the outstanding athlete amongst ‘present boys’ and ‘past boys’. It is obvious from written records and the inscriptions on the cups themselves that two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup.The Old Collegians Cup was a prestigious award presented in the early days of Ballarat College for private retention. At the Annual Sports Day almost the entire athletics program was devoted to the heats associated with the awarding of the College Cup (Senior) and the Old Collegians Cup. Competitors had to run in three handicapped races over 120, 250 and 440 yards respectively. So high was the regard for the winner of the Senior Cup that Old Collegians would refer to past events as happening 'in the year X won the College Cup'. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. Raymond Dawson Vaughan attended Ballarat College under Principal Major John Garbutt until 1909. He was one of the first students to enrol in the new Agricultural Science Course at Ballarat High School in 1910. he completed this course with credits and high honours. After leaving school he was involved in agricultural and pastoral pursuits at Lorcan in the West Wimmera. Ray served in WW1 and was killed in action, aged 25, on 9 June 1917 at Messines. His plaque in No 2041 in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. Thomas Anderson (BD 30/06/1886) entered Ballarat College in 1903 as a 17yo. He was the son of J W T Anderson of Waubra and had previously attended Waubra SS VI Class. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. ... Ballarat Clarendon College 1425 Sturt Street Ballarat ...Henry Youle Hind (10/11/1894 - 15/05/1979), son of Henry Dalzell Hind and Alice Louise nee Evans, Victoria Ave, Ballarat. He entered the school in 1910 as a 16yo (peer year 1912). The Senior Cup was a prestigious award for the winning athlete at the Ballarat College annual sports program. From 1884 College Cups were donated by the Old Collegians Association for the outstanding athlete amongst ‘present boys’ and ‘past boys’. It is obvious from written records Two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup. One cup was awarded to the outstanding Old Collegian athlete each year. This particular trophy was returned to the school and used as a House competition Cup in the Senior Boys Boarding House during the 1980s. After 1980 the trophy was removed from the Boarding House by persons unknown but returned during the 1990s. After repair in 2003 the Senior Boys Boarding House used it as a perpetual Trophy until 2005. The Hind family contacted the school and requested a photograph of the trophy in 2005. Son of Edmund Notley Moore and Josephine nee Fox, of 'Myra' Sturt St, brother of Otuel Alan Moore (peer year 1903). Previously studied at Haileybury IV Form. Edmund served in World War I and was killed in action in Belgium in October 1917. This item is the 1900 Ballarat College Senior Cup which was won by E F Moore. The Senior Cup was awarded to boys who were good 'all-rounders'. ... Ballarat Clarendon College 1425 Sturt Street Ballarat ...In 1926 three houses were established at CPLC - Cairns (Green), Kennedy (red) and Walker (Blue). Interest in inter-house competition was encouraged by the presentation of an antique silver cup, known as the Trawalla Cup. This was awarded at the end of each year to the House gaining the most points in work, sport and conduct. in some years Clarendon had inter-house play competitions as part of deciding the winner of the Trawalla Cup. From 1974-1996 the cup was presented at Speech Day to the Girls House with the best academic results. The Cup was the gift of Mrs H P MacKenzie, of 'Trawalla', a large property west of Ballarat. Harold Oscar was born in Ballarat 3rd January 1885, the son of Oscar Horatio Arthur and Elizabeth (Dowling) Nevett. He entered Ballarat College 1894 after attending Ellerslie College III Class. Harold Oscar was Dux of the College in 1900. He went on the study Law at the University of Melbourne. He enlisted in England on 14th December 1915 and was awarded the Military Cross at Messines Ridge on 7 June 1917. After demobilisation in May 1919 he married Evelyn Kitson on 25 October in England. Harold Oscar died on 11 June 1940. Harold's brothers Arthur Hereword, Horace William and Ralph Dowling all attended Ballarat College also. James was a significant sportsman winning medals for high jump 9n 1890 and 1891 as well as hurdles. He continued his sports after leaving the school, winning the 1893 Albion Football Club Best Place Player. James' great nephew and niece James (1962) and Helen (1967) also attended the school. Such ornate medals reveal the significant place of sports in the school culture at the end of the 19th century. A highly competitive sportsman, this trophy was awarded to him as Under 16 Champ in 1930. The school also holds his Open and Under 16 champion trophy in 1931 (it is unknown if this relates to swimming or athletics). He also won the Overall Swimming Champion trophy in 1932. ... Ballarat Clarendon College 1425 Sturt Street Ballarat ...Clarendon PLC held its first inter-house swimming sports on 23 February 1966. "Each house held its trials before school during the previous week. the programme included diving, free-style, back-stroke, brest-stroke and relay events for seven age groups. The final points in 1966 were Sloss 98, Kennedy 52, Walker 46, Cairns 27. Outstanding individual efforst were recorded for Gaye McLennan, Sally Sloss and Bronwyn Cottman. Following the sports themselves came the 'House Swim' where everyone had the chance to gain a point for her house by swimming one length in a specified time. The House Swim Cup was won by Cairns House. These sports were really held as a trial but because of their success they will be continued as a regular school function". He marched with Pompey Elliott's 15th in WW1. (see in the footsteps of Pompey p. 173-4. Roy was awarded the College Cup a prestigious sporting trophy in 1912. (see VC000054) The College Cup was awarded to the competitor who won all three 120, 250 and 440 yard races. For more information about the College Cup see Ring-A-Roo December 1993. In 1996 Roy was the oldest 'Old Collegian and youngest surviving Gallipoli veteran. Roy passed away 9th October 1996.
