Ephemera - Leighton Collection: Theatrical Scrapbook
Herbert A Leighton was an actor and Elocution teacher, known widely in the Eastern states of Australia where he performed with his wife Tracy Hamilton. However all was not as it seemed. In 1903 he was arrested in Perth after suspicions were raised when he purchased expensive jewellery and clothes for his wife. Subsequently six thousand pounds in banknotes was found under his bed. Another fellow from his theatre group was also arrested and charged with bank robbery. Leighton was charged with receiving money knowing it was stolen. Investigations by the Perth police showed that Leighton was really Norman Campbell who had been born in Gippsland. He had worked as a clerk in the Victorian Savings Bank in Melbourne and then in the same role in the Sydney Savings Bank. During this time he had amassed large sums of money by forgery, a crime he spent seven years in prison for. He then emerged as the newly minted H. A. Leighton, actor and elocution teacher in Bendigo.Large format scrapbook collated by H.A. Leighton. Contains photographs, flyers, ribbons, banners, programs, invitations, newspaper clippings, posters, promotional photos of performers between 1901 and 1904. Photograph, Early Pitfield, Showing Bridge, Store and Hotel
Identified by inscription on the back of the photograph as "Early Pitfield", and the buildings as "Matthew Hamilton Baird's . . . hotel & store". Information from Joan Hunt (see 'Pitfield/Kaleno' file) says the Emu Inn or Pitfield Hotel was at Pitfield/Wardy Yallock township on the road from Skipton to Geelong. Part of this area - foreground, to the left, was called "Buncle's Flat", named after John Buncle, a carpenter who lived in a cottage there with his family. An early timber inn on the Wardy Yallock Creek was owned first by Peter Hardie and then by Edward Langhorne/John McNamara in the 1840s and a mail run from Geelong was established to it in 1846. Matthew Hamilton Baird was the lessee or owner from 1852, and Benjamin Fernald from about 1860. In 1853, the nearby store, at that time owned by William Whitecross, caught fire. The fire spread to the hotel and both buildings were destroyed. The hotel was replaced by the brick or stone building seen in the photograph.Small black and white copy of original photograph which shows trees, fencing and farm buildings in foreground, and in the background a large stone or brick building plus smaller timber buildings (dwellings?) situated along a roadway. On the right of the photograph the road goes over a large bridge of timber construction. On back of photograph: "Early Pitfield showing Matthew Hamilton Baird's store (stone?) & hotel & store".pitfield bridge, pitfield hotel, pitfield township, buncle's flat, emu inn, buildings, hotels, matthew hamilton baird, benjamin fernald, edward langhorne, john mcnamara, william whitecross -

Newspaper - Flagstaff Beacon, 1979
The Flagstaff Beacon was printed weekly from 14th July 1979 to 5th October 1979. The paper was published in Warrnambool by Trevor Alan Mackay (Ennisclay Pty Ltd) and the address was listed as 104 Liebig Street with the Classified Department at 148 Fairy Street. The name of this paper was a reference to the two operating lighthouses on Flagstaff Hill in Warrnambool. The Flagstaff Beacon was delivered free to Warrnambool householders but extra copies could be obtained for 20 cents a copy. The paper produced the usual newspaper material – current news, sport, real estate, movies, women’s news, motoring, advertisements etc. In August 1979 the Flagstaff Beacon offered colour reproductions of any photographs appearing in the paper. This was described as the first service of its kind to be offered in Victoria. These newspapers are of considerable interest as they are some of the few surviving copies of the 1979 Warrnambool paper, The Flagstaff Beacon. They also are of historical interest because of their news items and their advertisements. These are 13 copies of the Warrnambool newspaper, The Flagstaff Beacon. The newspapers are printed in black and white with a masthead featuring a colour – mainly red and orange. The masthead also has an image of a lighthouse, perhaps the Upper Lighthouse at Warrnambool. Most of the copies have 20 pages. The copies have some staining where they have been folded. warrnambool newspapers, the flagstaff beacon, history of warrnambool -

Painting, Jade & Possum Phuoc Tuy 1969, 2001
David Robson has had a lifelong association with aircraft. He started flying at the age of 16 and served for 21 years in the RAAF as a fighter pilot, test pilot and forward air controller (including a tour in Vietnam in the 0-2A). His hobby is painting, and he naturally turns to his own experiences and visual images to convey the wonders and beauty of flight, the camaraderie of the Services and ugliness of war.Original watercolour of USAF Cessna 0-2A supporting A/An Army Bell Helicopter in 1969 in Phuoc Tuy Province. Call sings Jade and Possum respectively. The scene portrayed in the watercolour is of a USAF Cessna 0-2A aircraft supporting an Australian Army Bell 47 helicopter in 1969. the team operated in Phuoc Tuy Province in support of the 1st australian Task Force. the 0-2A was a Forward Air Control aircraft flown by both USAF and RAAF pilips in this role. The Thompson brothers, George and Joseph, formerly of Ballarat and the new owners of Yallum Park, established the Glenthompson Brickworks in 1900. The entire process of creating a solid, pressed Glenthompson Brick happens on site, where red and cream clay is excavated. Brick presses dating back to 1940 are still in operation today, the kilns are stacked by hand to ensure specific needs are met and colour varieties are achieved. Refined oil is used to fire down draught kilns, which allows temperatures to be adjusted to ensure unique colour ranges are achieved.Colour photographs of kilns at Glenthompson Brickworks. building, heritage, glenthompson, industry, industrial heritage, brickworks, oven, glenthompson brickworks, george thompson, joseph thompson -
