Ephemera - Point Ormond Timetable, Last Tram record, 22-10-1960
The MMTB Timetable details the trips from Elsternwick or Point Ormond for each day of the week. The sheet records the time of the last tram, 1036pm, driver G Loft No. 2480, and the tram as X2 677 on 22-10-1960. The donor advised that the MMTB following the practice adopted for the Bourke St changeover in 1940, the MMTB chose to pull the tram service before the last advertised trip for the day. Those present to ride the last started early and rode up and down for quite a few runs, then, on one arrival at Elsternwick Station, the Inspector (known as grasshoppers or Braids) on board instructed the driver to keep going and we rode through to GH Depot without paying another fare. They noted a half-cab bus, destination 'Clifton Hill', lurking ready to take up the running. The donor reported (and as you will see from the endorsements on the timetable) “I circled the time of the last run and got the signature and badge number of the driver. An early use (1980) of a combined rail/tram/bus ticket for the Melbourne central area within a defined area. On the rear are conditions of travel, allowing travel within the metro area on trams, trains and buses. Month and day were punched at the time of issue. Has the Ministry of Transport logo on the bottom right hand corner.Demonstrates a combined ticketing system for the inner area of Melbourne prior to Metcards and the like.Light card printed - one on manila coloured paper with orange print and the second on fawn coloured card with brown print. The article and photo reports on the poor condition of the Victorian Railways operated St Kilda to Brighton tram line in St Kilda St, Brighton. This section of line closed during 1957. The Council reported that it had briefed a QC about the matter. The Railways were responsible for road maintenance and track maintenance. Administrative record - Report, Tramway Board, Tramway Board - Special Work, 1916
Report prepared by the Tramway Board, the intermediate body between the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Co. (MTOC) and the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), examining the status of the special work (points and crossings), curves, depot entry tracks and other worn tracks for wear. This report looks at the northern half of the cable system. Prepared May 1916 with a second inspection during July 1916. Provides detailed layout drawings of each junction, crossings with other cable lines, railway tracks, curves, depot entry, and locations where cable pick up points were - a "wiggle" in the track. This flag was created in 1964 for the Peninsula Grammar Cadet Unit which would be officially established in 1965. Primarily used for parades and formal events, this original flag is important to the history of the Peninsula Grammar Cadet Unit as a whole. This flag is significant as it is the original flag of the Cadet Unit created prior to the Unit's official formation. Blue flag, red and white stripes with school logo in center. The 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was raised in 1920 as part of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, 2nd Cavalry Division, Citizen Military Forces, with Headquarters at Seymour and depots along the Goulburn Valley from Mansfield to Tocumwal in southern NSW. In December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) converted from horse to mechanised, initially as 20th Motor Regiment. In 1943 the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. Upon its return in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion. It was disbanded following the end of the war. 20th Light Horse was the only light horse regiment to serve overseas in WWII.This is one of a collection of photographs featuring a Light Horse regiment drawn from rural and regional Victoria in the period immediately prior to mobilisation for World War 2 (1939-1945).Black and white photograph of soldier mounted on horse.
