Melbourne Legacy
Document - Memoir, Escape from Rabaul
A first hand account written by Legatee Ashley Dore (VX 42841, 1918-1986) of the efforts of the Australian soldiers who elected not to surrender and who hid in the jungle intending to make their way to the coast and find a boat to New Guinea. Dore has written an engrossing account of the difficulties and privations they face, ultimately arriving in Pondo where they rejoined other troops under the command of Captain Appel who was able to get them to Rein Bay and finally Cairns. Dore had a civilian career with AMP in positions of increasing responsibility and became a Legatee on 9th September 1958. He was also Assistant District Commissioner in the Boy Scout Association. His financial acumen led to him becoming Honorary Treasurer of Melbourne Legacy after only three years of membership, and he was appointed President in 1965. Ill health curtailed his activities in 1970 and he died at the relatively early age of 67. A vivid account of the wartime experiences of a Melbourne Legacy President which exemplifies the type of person who was invited to become a Legatee. Its value is illustrated by the fact that a copy was sent to the Australian War Memorial.White A4 paper with black type x 8 pages.Handwritten in blue biro: 'L 18' Handwritten in black biro: '1/7/01 Copy sent to Aust War Memorial' (signature illegible)memoir, world war two -

A photo that was kept in an album of past presidents and prominent Legatees. The photo shows Legatee Ron Austin with Legatee Sam Benson at a function in Legacy House. Legatee Benson appears to be counting money, perhaps donations or door entry. Ron Austin has the distinction of being the youngest surviving Melbourne Legatee to have served in WW1, he also served in WW2 and received an OBE for his tireless devotion to duty. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. The items have been catalogued separately.A record of Legatee Ron Austin attending a function at Legacy House. The information was collected to record the lives of prominent legatees in a folder.Photo of two legatees at Legacy house attached to an A4 page with caption.Handwritten in blue pen 'Legatee Ron Austin and L/tee Sam Benson. 1st floor dining room. These two photographs were taken circa 1970s at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo. Photo .1P was taken in 1971 when the then Justice John Kerr (later Sir John Kerr AK, GCMG, GCVO, QC) visited the Regiment. At that time, he was the Chairman of the Committee of Enquiry into Service Pay and Conditions. Personnel from Lithographic Squadron had submitted a grievance regarding salaries to the Committee, who during this visit reviewed their technical skills and conducted interviews. This ultimately led to the personnel achieving salary parity with other technical trades in RASvy. Photo .2P was taken after a formal medal presentation at the Army Survey Regiment in c1976. The Defence Force Service Medal was presented to personnel in recognition of 15 years of efficient remunerated service, or the Clasp for 5 years of additional service. This is a set of photographs of Lithographic Squadron Personnel, Justice John Kerr and other RASvy personnel at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo c1970s.
