Else Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A from 1940-1945. The Internment Camp currency was manufactured for use in the camps by the internees. It is an example of the ingenuity of the internees in making use of anything at hand & repurposing it for much more than originally intended. Else's daughter, Else-Lore Hukins donated the items. Penny with small metal bar soldered to back ("one penny" side). Her husband was away on business in Germany at the outbreak of war and was not interned with them & therefore Else was also motivated to learn Russian because it was possible she would be repatriated to the Russian sector of Germany at the end of the war (namely Chemnitz, Saxony). Else-Lore Oertel was a German internee in Camp 3A as a child, with her mother from 1940-1945. Woodworking was popular amongst the internees and Werner Dehnel, another internee in camp 3, made the darning mushroom for Else-Lore, for darning socks.Wooden darning mushroom. Darker wood at top. Base (stalk) is of lighter wood. Both possibly varnished. Stalk has bevelled lines where it meets top. Base has 1939 Australian penny underside. Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3 A as a child, from 1940-1945. Her godmother, another internee, Friedel Dehnel (Tante Fiffi) made the hanging for Else-Lore & wrote out the poem on the back for her.Handmade wooden plywood wall hanging, painted, of sleeping blonde haired baby dressed in light blue laying in a cradle painted dark blue (with red heart) with checked red & white curtains & bird (robin red-breast) atop the curtains. In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp. Description of collection of theatre productions made in Internment camp 3, which were produced and directed by Wilhelm Fugmann. Names of prisoners of war and internees who died while imprisoned in the camp at Cowra. Names include those Japanese who died during the suicidal breakout from the Cowra P.O.W. Camp. on 4th. August 1944.The majority of those buried in the Cemetery were brought to, and imprisoned in Australia during WW2.
