The Australian Womens Army Service was raised on 13 August 1941, and in 1944 and 1945 AWAS served in Dutch and Australian New Guinea. It is believed the word thimble evolved from "thumb bell". They were first produced in 1695 by a dutch metalworker. The small thimble, size 7 is 15 mm at the rim and was made in Germany. Part of the small collection of uniforms in DAHC's possession. Like most of these uniform this one stems from the 1950's. The shoulder insignas indicate a "Genie" division (Engineering Corps).Many of the 1950's period uniforms came from people that had been discharged after having served in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) during the Indonesian Indepence War.Part of Dutch army uniform: (1) dress jacket with (2) cotton dress belt, (3a) leather belt with (3b) cross belt, (4) khaki tie and (5) cap with names W. van Reed//Dorland on the inside. Princess Juliana and Prince Bernard married in 1937 prior to the Princess becoming Queen in 1948.The fact that this item was brought to Australia with a migrant family indicates the affection in which the Royal Family was held by many Dutch people.Rectangular tile depicting a leafy tree loaded with oranges. Under it are four young people - two male and two female. The main colours are green on a greyish background. Orange accents appear throughout the clothing. An orange banner reads 1937-1962. Below the illustration is the motto: "Doen kunnen we alles maar dan ook alleen allen samen." (We can do everything but only together). On the back are various imprints relating to the maker Mosa Holland.

Kevin Coombs, OAM (born 30 May 1941) is an Australian wheelchair basketballer and athlete who competed at five Paralympics including the first Paralympic Games in 1960. He was the first Australian Aboriginal Paralympic competitor for Australia. Coombs was part of the Australia men's national wheelchair basketball team at the 1960 Rome, 1968 Tel Aviv, 1972 Heidelberg, 1980 Arnhem and 1984 New York/Stoke Mandeville Paralympics. He served as coach/captain at the 1972 games and as captain at the 1984 games. He also participated in athletics events at the 1968 and 1972 Paralympics. The Dederang-Mt. Beauty Football Club, nicknamed the Bombers, is an Australian rules football club playing in the Tallangatta & District Football League. The club is based in Dederang, Victoria and Mount Beauty, Victoria. It was formed in the early1900s and disbanded in 1976 when it merged with Mount Beauty to form Dederang-Mount Beauty football club. In 1948 the competition received a boost with an influx of new players who came to work on the Kiewa Hydro Scheme. George and Gordon Hobbs were the famous Hobbs brothers of Dederang which two Premierships were built around. Four brothers starred in Dederang’s First Flag in the Tallangatta League in 1958. Dederang Football Club was one of the earliest recorded football clubs in the Kiewa Valley area. Many players came from pioneering farming families in the area and there were often several boys from the same family playing in the team. Camp ovens were used for cooking indoors and outdoors. They were used to perform a variety of tasks and to last forever.The use of dry sand moulds for casting the iron created a smoother surface. A more even surface meant more even contact points with food. The lid is close fitting.Used by people in the Kiewa Valley including campers, drovers, shearers, bushmen, miners and groups eg.scouts to cook food.Camp ovens originally named Dutch ovens were made from cast iron, were heavy and were developed in the Netherlands in the 1700s. Australian drovers, shearers, bushmen, campers and miners used the cast iron camp ovens. This one has legs and was used outside. The lid is slightly concave enabling coals from the cooking fire to be placed on top as well as below. This provides more uniform internal heat and lets the inside act as an oven.
