Travellers ticket, Unknown, Unknown - 19th Century
Metal 'traveller's tickets' were issued at the gate of Mt. Fyans to itinerant workers and travellers passing through the district; they could be redeemed at the homestead for a meal and/or a bed for the night at the station workers' lodgings. Mt Fyans was a significant pastoral property in the Dundonnel area of the Western District. Originally settled in 1841 by Lachlan Mckinnon, by 1856 the Mt.Fyans portion comprised over 48,000 acres. By 1898 when it was sub-divided on the death of then owner William Cumming, it comprised 9000 acres. Pastoral properties relied heavily on a semi-skilled workforce whose numbers were seasonally varied - hence the need for itinerant labour. Circular metal 'travellers ticket' with hole punched through at the top for hanging/ storage. Photograph, "Ashen" Homestead Remnants in Murtoa after a Storm c1920’s
Dugald McPherson's Ashen's Homestead (Remnants) c1920’s Ashen's south of Murtoa was one of the area's original squatting runs. This photo taken in the 1920's shows the homestead after a violent storm had been through the area. In 1853, the country around Ashen's was covered by timber, she-oaks, bull-oaks, light gum and box thickets of ti-tree and clumps of pine and wattles. The vegetation was so thick outside the horse paddock it was difficult to move in any direction. It was said McPherson and two others fought over the land.Back entrance to Ashen's Station.stawell -

Document, Wollaston sale, 1919
This is a poster advertising the sale of part of the Wollaston Estate in Warrnambool in 1919. The sections for sale were Allotments 1, 18 and 19 which included the Wollaston Homestead. The original Wollaston property of 679 acres was selected by Thomas Manifold in the late 1840s. This land, on the northern side of the Merri River, near the Woodford Road was three kilometres from the Warrnambool town. The first farmer we know who leased the property was William Simpson. Walter Manifold inherited the property and he took it over in 1884. The swing bridge he built in 1890 still stands today. In 1919 the Closer Settlement Board of Victoria acquired Wollaston and 17 lots were sold to returned soldiers for farming purposes. By 1930 there were only five soldier settlers remaining. In 2009 further subdivision took place with lots sold for residential purposes. The homestead allotments were sold separately in 1919 with various owners of the homestead itself recorded since that time. This poster is of interest as it shows the areas of the Wollaston Estate which were sold in 1919. The history of this estate is well-documented and of importance in the history of Warrnambool. This is a sheet of paper with red and black printing and a map of the Wollaston Estate which is photo-lithographed. The sheet has been folded three times. It has some small tears at the top of the page. wollaston, history of warrnambool, walter manifold -

Photograph, 'Glenfine' Shearing Shed, 1890
In July 1840, Glenfine, consisting of 31,440 acres, was acquired by Thomas Downie. In March 1842 the 'Right of Run' was taken up by Thomas Chirnside who with an imported stallion 'Delapre' ran a horse stud. He apparently lived here for ten years and employed a gardener with a wife and five children from Hobart, Tasmania. Only some blocks of stone and a few trees remain of their homestead. In 1853 the property was transferred to Dr. John Chirnside, an elder brother of Thomas. I, 1857, William Rose of Naringal purchased Glenfiine where he and his family lived until 1904 when it was bought by Richard Howell's estate. It was then 39,000 acres. The present house was built by the Rowes in 1872 of bluestone quarried on the property with a cement render overall. The architect was H.R. Casselli. In 1911 R.C. Howell, son of Richard, became the owner, followed by his son in 1960. Gold was found on the property and by 1898 the township of Hollybush was first reported, situated at either side of the front entrance, on the Cressy Road. The land for the township was given by William Rowe. By 1990 Hollybush had a population of 426 persons. All of the early history of Glenfine, documents etc., were destroyed when Naringal homestead was burnt down in 1944. Glenfine was classified by the National Trust in 1974 and is on the Heritage Commission Register. Mounted black and white image of a large group of men and boys in front of a weatherboard shearing shed. The men are each holding a pair of hand shears. One young man is kneeling on top of a wool bale. A small blue biro 'x' identifies W. Todd. Glenfine was a pastoral station. Photograph, Tooram Park homestead c1915, early 20th century
The Percy Uebergang family lived at Tooram Park, Allansford from 1912 until 1992. Percy and Myrtle Uebergang's children were twins, Ray and Joyce born in 1926 who lived at Tooram Park until their deaths, Ray in 1986 and Joyce in 1992. Neither Ray nor Joyce married and following the death of her brother Joyce set up the Ray and Joyce Uebergang Foundation which supports the local community. This photograph is part of the collection of items given into the care of the Cheese World Museum. The Uebergang family purchased Tooram Park in 1912. It was part of the original Tooram run which was taken up in 1839/40 by John McMahon Allan. Allan held the property until 1860 after which it passed through several owners including John Orlebar, Thomas McLeod Palmer, Owen family. Tooram was famous for the cheese from its large dairy herd. The herd was hand-milked. Palmer employed Indian labour to undertake this task. In 1883 Palmer was charged with the manslaughter of an Indian worker but was acquitted. This case was extensively reported in the Warrnambool Standard. The Standard also featured a number of articles about Tooram [22 June 1882, 17 March 1883 to 15 May 1993, 30 October 1886, 22 October 1897, 11 May 1926, 8 June 1931]. The property remained in the Uebergang family until after Joyce's death in 1992. Tooram is significant as it was one of the earliest runs taken up in the Warrnambool area. It was divided up following its sale in 1897. Tooram cheese was renowned. This photograph is significant as it shows Tooram Park homestead in its earlier days with the prolific timber decoration which was later removed.Black & white photograph on a cardboard mount showing Tooram Park homestead. The house has a white picket fence. A drain is in the foreground and is serviced by a stone culvert is in the right foreground. Two cars are parked in front of the house. The fountain in the image is at the entrance to the 'Emu Bottom' homestead. George Evans squatted on land to graze sheep, along the Jacksons Creek Valley, originally known as Buttlejork Valley, in 1836 and built the homestead from local Silurian sandstone and timber. Over the years it has had a number of owners. In the 1920s the property was renamed 'Holly Green' by H.L Webb after a property in Narre Warren. In the 1950s it was renamed 'Emu Bottom'. Over the years a number of fires have destroyed parts of the building and as a result, little of the original building remains. The fountain was erected in 1936 to mark the centenary of the property as well as 100 years of European settlement in theSunbury area.
