An inter-club memorandum advising of the Board's approval to establish a hostel for Junior Legatees, later to be known as Holmbush, and ultimately as Blamey House. Holmbush was the first residential accommodation operated by Melbourne Legacy, and was established in 1942. It accommodated boys aged between 9 and 19, usually attending secondary school. In 1956, Holmbush became known as Blamey House. It was located not far from another Legacy home, Stanhope (1245 Burke Road). Residents of Holmbush and other Legacy homes were the children of deceased ex-servicemen. Sometimes residents at Legacy homes were both children of ex-servicemen and wards of state. In 1956, Blamey House, another Legacy children's home formerly in Beaumaris moved into the Holmbush property in Kew, and it was renamed Blamey House. Location 1942 - 1956? Detailed measurements of the rooms, but the plan of the land noted as being enclosed is not included. The details had been requested in a previous telephone conversation between the parties, indicating early interest in purchasing the property which ultimately became Holmbush. Letter dated 10 December 1942 to the President of the Legacy Club with the Hostel Committee's recommendation to purchase 1267 Burke Road as a hostel. He advises that there was only one dissenting committee member (Legatee Carleton) who felt that the property was too far from the city for convenience. The price of £5,500 is considered to be favourable following a formal valuation of £6,633, and he estimates that the property would accommodate at least 23 children plus staff with only minor alteration.Records the Hostel Committee's official decision and submits it to the then President of the Legacy Club, Legatee H.M. A letter dated 18 January 1943 from builders to the Legacy Club submitting their tender for alterations to 1267 Burke Road for the sum of £408. The property mentioned at 1267 Burke Road was named Holmbush and was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. A letter that was sent from Legatee PW Powell to Legatee 'Doney' on 21st September 1928. He mentions his purpose is to record some of the early history of Legacy in a minute book of the Club, which unfortunately was missing at the time of writing. As well as saying it was formed after Stan Savige saw General Gellibrand's Remembrance Club in Hobart. Luncheon meetings were held and the first one L/ Powell attended in September 1923 had about 8 attendees - Stan Savige, Fred Forrest, Frank Selleck, Charlie Watson, Peter Eller, and Ted Pittard. L/ Powell was appointed Hon. secretary and there was discussion about the name of the club. Suggestions included 'Continuance', 'Chevron', 'Espirit de Corps', and 'Apres Le Guerre'. He says 'at that stage Legacy was not mentioned, the inspiration came later in my own offie when seeking a name that would appeal to he imagination. My recommendation to the members was covered in he first luncheon address given to the Club under the title of "Business Leadership" .' Selection of the first president included inviting General Monash and General Tivey, who both declined. Colonel Harold Cohen accepted. 'The first literature issued by the Club included: List of office bearers (deleting decorations and rank) / Constitution and By laws / Classification / Brief History (which was torn up before issue as it was felt that Legacou should be impersonal and that the principal should stand before the individual).' The notation H3 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. Foskett, the President of Melbourne Legacy, to Branch Chairmen and Members of the Board of Management setting up a meeting with them on 22 February 1973 to discuss the future of Legacy nationally. L/ Foskett identifies the following issues to be explored: 1. Admission of WWII men as Legatees 2. Rate of decline in membership 3. Maintenance of the Legacy style of service 4. How to wind up Legacy in the event of that being decided 5. How to perpetuate Legacy if not wound up. A letter dated 10th April 1987 from Legacy President B.R. Wilson to Mr Ross Oakley Chaiman of the Victorian Football League VFL (now AFL) inviting him to speak at Legacy's Tuesday Luncheon. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A record that the speakers were from very different walks of life and the subjects were varied. This was an invitation indicating the diversity of guest speakers.
