On 17th December 1985 record torrential rain fell in Sunbury, which flooded the main Melbourne Bendigo rail line and disrupted traffic. The photograph is looking to the north of the station and takes in the historic Macedon Street bridge and the open ground with the storage silo on the west side of the railway line. The steam train has arrived at Number 2 platform at Sunbury Railway Station. Before diesel engines were used on the regional lines, steam trains were widely used. The Starkie drinking fountain was erected to commemorate the work done by Joseph Starkie to formation of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust in 1905. This later led to the establishment of a water supply system in Sunbury. Originally the fountain was at the intersection of O'Shanassy and Brook Streets. As the shopping centre expanded, the fountain was moved to a reserve in the Village Green. The three people from L-R: Graham Gibb, Trevor Dunn and Wendy Sutherland were members of the Sunbury & District Heritage Association and were attending the launch of a booklet that the Association produced. It was a publication launched on the 21st Au8gust 1994, that highlighted four historic walks around the the old Sunbury township. Aitkens Gap Police Lock up was originally constructed at The Gap which was south of the junction of Gap Road (Sunbury Road) and Calder Highway (Victoria St/Mt. Alexander Road). It was part of a police complex which was a changeover station for the gaol escort. The cluster of trees beside the Calder Highway, north of Sunbury, were burnt in February 2014 when a grassfire started along the road and a severe wind change from the south took the flames across the dry countryside beyond Riddells Creek and beyond Clarkefield. The Bendigo rail line was damaged resulting in it being closed for repairs.
