In Victoria the Education Department's School papers were compulsory reading for children until the 1930s when the Victorian readers became compulsory and the School Papers supplemented them. This item is an example of a school text book used in the very early 20th century. School Papers were produced as a result of the perceived need for more local content for children as the school readers were English. In 1896 the first school papers were produced for Grade 3 students. These were followed by Grade 4 in 1897 and Grades 5 & 6 in 1898.
