This book contains M.U.I.O.O.F. (Manchester Unity Independent Order Of Oddfellows) accounts of the Orbost group. Friendly Societies were founded in the Australian Colonies in the mid-19th Century by immigrants from England who had been members in Societies which dated back to the 18th Century. Like all working people these immigrants experienced sickness, accidents, unemployment, death and burial. They needed help of like fellows to tide their families over these times. So they formed a branch of one of the Friendly Societies back in the mother country. The idea was to make fixed contributions to a fund and when they were off work they would receive a payment. When they died funeral benefits would be paid and the widow and children would be cared for. It was a form of local insurance for hard times. This account book was used in a a time of 'look after yourself' as the Colonial Governments did not provide pensions or benefits. The Villa Fortuna Action Group, led by president Merle Hall, has received positive feedback from many council election candidates regarding the future of Fortuna Villa. The group reached out to prospective councillors, sharing their proposal and inviting responses, which were thoughtful and enthusiastic. The group is committed to keeping Fortuna Villa under public ownership for the benefit of the Bendigo community. They propose that the City of Greater Bendigo acquire the property, following Commonwealth Government guidelines for priority sale at concessional rates. The Action Group envisions developing Fortuna Villa as an arts, cultural, and heritage centre. Their model is based on other successful, self-sustaining projects in similar historic properties. This lithographic illuminated address issued to E J Swift for his services to the lodge by the United Ancient Order of Druids (UAOD) Grand Lodge of Australia. E. J. Swift served as the Grand Secretary during a significant era when the UAOD (Melbourne) was one of Victoria's most influential friendly societies. Swift was a key figure in the development and opening of Druids House at 407–409 Swanston Street, Melbourne. He was present when the building was officially opened on 4 April 1927 by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne.The UAOD was founded in Melbourne in 1851 as an offshoot from it's English Order. The UAOD functioned as a friendly society, providing medical, funeral, and sickness benefits to its members. The illuminated address is produced by the prominent Melbourne firm Troedel & Co. The event was held toward the end of an extensive and protracted six-year community battle over the proposed redevelopment of the hotel. These were introduced in 1992 on the Lilydale-Belgrave lines only (not on the Alamein or Waverley lines). They were a prototype. Many station platforms had to have the coping reduced or replaced in order to provide clearance. The trial was a failure because, while the carriages carried more passengers, they also took longer to load and unload, negating any benefits from carriage of extra passengers. They were used as off-peak trains only on the Surrey Hills line. The 4D carriages were based on the Tangara carriage being built by A Goninan & Co for CityRail in Sydney, however they were similar only in terms of interior and exterior bodywork. They were manufactured from stainless steel and were fitted with air-conditioning, tinted windows, and inter-car doors, allowing passengers to access all carriages of the train. These ledgers are administrative records of the Warrnambool Friendly Societies Park Trust. One contains Minutes of meetings from 1931 to 1947 and the other is an Accounts Book with records of payments for salaries, insurance, rentals, ground improvements etc. from 1908 to 1947. Some inserts in the ledgers date back to the early days of the Trust. In 1871 the Friendly Societies of Warrnambool (benefit societies which mainly offered members heath cover, including the Oddfellows, Foresters, Hibernians,, Rechabites, Sons of Temperance, Druids and Protestant Alliance) established a sports ground in Warrnambool. This included facilities for cricket, football and Athletics Carnivals and other public demonstrations and meetings and was administered by a Trust with members representing each of the Friendly Societies. Today the area is a major sports facility and still has the name Friendly Societies Park but it is now administered by the Warrnambool City Council. These items are of considerable historical interest as they contain much detail about the early history of the Friendly Societies Park Trust and give researchers valuable information on the work of benefit societies in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Warrnambool and also on a major sports facility still existing in Warrnambool. .1 Ledger of 380 pages with a black cover and beige leather spine and corners.
