The 3 front blocks facing Union Road were subdivided off in circa 1967, so this building now faces Barton Street. Since 1984 it has been a private residence. It was originally built in c1890 and from 1896 it was used as facilities for Surrey College, a private boys' boarding school. Dr F Darling was Principal. From 1935-1960s it became Nethercourt Private Hospital. This had previously operated from 1921 in Wilson Street. This building was damaged by fire and was subsequently demolished before June 1983. From 1901-1917 it was the site of the Surrey Hills Post Office. In later years the part of the building with frontage to Windsor Crescent was used as the dental surgery of Dr David Ellis; the Union Road part of the building was occupied by a barber and tobacconist for many years. At the time of the fire the building was used by a business supplying hydroponics requirements. Vic Dartnell joined his cousin Percy Cathcart in a pharmacy on the opposite corner in 1936 and moved it to this corner in 1940. His son John followed as the pharmacist and then his daughter Amanda. After the Dartnell family sold the business, the pharmacy continued in a similar manner as a compounding pharmacy and retained 'Dartnell' in its name. This site was later occupied by Mitton's pharmacy. James Henry Pollard appears on the 1903 electoral roll as a painter in Canterbury Road (in one of the buildings that made up Hansen's Terrace.)The Union Road shops are covered by a City of Boroondara Heritage Overlay. Notes from a previous collection coordinator indicate that Miss Lucy Musselwhite (Lillywhite) opened the hospital in 1914 and Matron Eliza Tank took it over in 1921 and named it Nethercourt Private Hospital. However recent research suggests that Miss Musselwhite (name confirmed) moved from Tooronga to Wilson Street some time between 1903 and 1909. She and her mother Elizabeth are listed in the 1909 electoral rolls in Wilson Street and Lucy's occupation is given as nurse. (It is of course possible that the property was a residence only at this time and later opened as a private hospital.) The name Nethercourt was used prior to Matron Eliza Tank taking over. Her daughter Irene was also a nurse at Nethercourt. Lucy Musselwhite was born in 1873 in Hampshire. She married Henry James Dore in later life and lived in Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. She died in 1955. In 1930 / 1935 Matron Tank transferred the hospital to 219-223 Union Road. Later it was known as Norwich Hall / St Jude's. Mosgiel Hospital in Mont Albert Road also opened in 1924. After this time home births became less common. Nethercourt Hospital closed in the 1960s.Small hospitals such as this one were primarily used for midwifery, preceding the development of larger centralised general hospitals. This building was adjacent to Surrey Lodge, on the corner of Canterbury and Union Roads. The store was established by George Sim in 1885 and in 1889 he set up the 1st Surrey Hills Post Office here. The business was bought by Alfred Claude Geer in 1909; the Camberwell Rate books show that from 1913 Geer remained owner but the business was occupied by Alfred Henry Crump; confirmed by electoral rolls for 1913-1918. Prior to moving to Surrey Hills, Alfred was a grocer in Dandenong. Otto Kuhn was Alfred Crump's store manager and may have taken this photo. Alfred married Hazel May Ordish in 1913 in Dandenong. The marriage notice in the Argus on 5 July indicates that the couple resided at 'Hazeldene' in Leopold Crescent. Ref: Mr & Mrs J Davies, Greensborough - Alfred Davies took over this store in 1904. He lived with his wife, Lucretia and 5 children above the store. His son Cyril recalled sleeping on the corner balcony on hot nights. Alfred Davies was a strong Temperance man and gave up the store when clients pressured him to collect their beer from the hotel opposite and deliver it with their grocery orders. The pharmacy moved across the road to this corner in 1936 when acquired by Dartnells. The corner shop in Woodheads building was a store and other businesses over the years. The "Druggist" on right, in Hansen's Exchange building, was established in 1889. From 1910 Percy Cathcart conducted the pharmacy there until 1936 when he was joined by Vic Dartnell, his cousin. In 1940, Vic transferred the business to Woodheads corner. His son John followed as a pharmacist until his daughter Amanda became the pharmacist. After the Dartnell family sold the business, the pharmacy continued in a similar manner as a compounding pharmacy and retained 'Dartnell' in its name.This documents the importance given to celebration of the British Empire in the Surrey Hills area in the first half of the 20th century. It was designed by architect Arthur William Plaisted (1890-1965) and is an early example of attic-style Californian bungalow style. Dr Carrington ( 1900-1970) succeeded Dr Blakie and practised at 174 Union Road from 1930-1970. St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was built in 1886 and from 1904 until 1907 was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. As the population increased there was a need for a church in Surrey Hills. This brick church was consecrated in 1922 and replaced the earlier one built in 1907 on the adjacent site in Union Road. The house behind the church at 1 Montrose Street belonged to Mr W B Vine. There are 2 copies: the original donated print and an enlargement. The original is mounted on card with photo mounts along with 884, 885, 886 and 512. It measures 13 cm x 9 cm. The post office opened at this location in 1912. It was demolished in 2000. Post office history in the area: Until 1883 when the railway came through to Surrey Hills, this was essentially a rural community of scattered farms. Land subdivisions soon occurred along the railway line and limited postal services followed soon after, although a ‘permanent’ home for the post office was two decades away. George Sim Junior is acknowledged as our first postmaster; he opened a post office on 1 October 1884 in his father’s general store at 619-621 Canterbury Road, a few doors down from the Surrey Hills Hotel on the corner of Union Road. Over the next 20 years, the Surrey Hills Post Office moved several times into temporary, shared accommodation – in 1889 into Woodhead’s Corner Store at 364 Canterbury Road; then in 1895 to No 376, Hansen’s Exchange Building, part of Hansen’s Terrace (demolished) and in 1901 to 109 Union Road, on the corner of Windsor Crescent. Following Federation in 1901, the new Commonwealth Government established the Postmaster-General's Department to provide postal services to the nation. Many of the post offices constructed in the following years reflected a growing sense of Australian pride and nationalism. It was 1914 when building commenced on the ‘purpose-built’ post office at 609 Canterbury Road, Surrey Hills. Described as “a polychromatic Federation Freestyle building”, it served as the local post office for nearly 85 years until sold by the Commonwealth Government in c1999, after which the post office moved to the current, less prominent site at 100 Union Road. For nearly 10 years under private ownership, the building was successfully adapted for use as the base for two businesses, Gargoyles and Dragons and later the Surrey Sculpture Studio, and fortuitously the historic integrity of the building was maintained. However although renovated in the 1990's, structurally sound and of historic significance, it was not protected under local or commonwealth heritage legislation and was demolished soon after sale. This is an early image of a demolished building which should have been protected. In 1991, when the City of Camberwell conducted a heritage study, (which still informs the basis of the City of Boroondara’s heritage guidelines for this part of the municipality,) the post office was owned by the Commonwealth Government. As such, it could not be considered for heritage listing by the local authorities. Some years later, the Commonwealth and Australia Post rather belatedly recognized not only that post offices have heritage and social value, but also that the architecture of post offices as community buildings is important. A heritage management scheme was developed for the buildings they own or control under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999. Unfortunately, the Surrey Hills Post Office had been sold and demolished before this was finally enacted in 2004. It was subdivided in 1914 and offered for sale as individual sites. Building did not occur until after WW1 and after the creek across Union Road had been barrelled. The garage was built at 145 Union Road in 1925. It has had continuous use as a garage since then. Originally there were petrol bowsers on the footpath. The façade of the building is remarkably the same as it was in 1925 when David Denholm was the first proprietor. He remained until c1950 and was followed by Benchley Motors P/L, then Spenden Motors P/L. John and Val Warren-Smith purchased it in c1980. In 2019 their family, including Philip and Glenn Warren-Smith and 2 of Philip's sons, still operate it as J&V Warren-Smith Auto Service.The Union Road shopping strip was assessed for heritage protection by Lovell Chen in June 2011 (Surrey Hills and Canterbury Hill Estate Heritage Study: Union Road Commercial Precinct Citation). Warmly regarded and often mistakenly thought to be Philip's father, he was not a member of the family. Wally had an interesting background, not known to many. He was born in the German Templer colony of Sarona in Palestine. It had been established in Ottoman Palestine in 1871 and is now a suburb of Tel Aviv. In July 1941, 188 people from Sarona were deported to Australia on the Queen Elizabeth. Wally's family were amongst them. They were interned in Tatura in Central Victoria until 1947. This was originally built as a State Savings Bank of Victoria branch in 1916. The first manager was Mr Campbell Cameron. On 26 August 1990, the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) entered into an agreement with the Treasurer of Victoria for a merger with the State Bank of Victoria (SBV). All former State banks were given new signage in November 1992. The CBA operated the branch for a relatively short period of time with the branch closing in 2000. Community pressure for a local bank resulted in the Bendigo Bank opening a branch on the site in 2002. The hail storm occurred on 2 December 1924. This is one in a series from the Lyons' photo collection. This was gifted to the SHNCHC by Arthur Frederick Lyons, son of Frederick Alphonsus (Fred) Lyons and Elizabeth Ruby Hall, who married in 1918. Fred Lyons died 4/10/1980. The Lyons’ home in Sunbury Crecent was called ‘Knopshambury’ - this was probably a misspelling of Knockshanbally in Co Kilkenny, the birth place of Fred’s father, Thomas Edmund Josias Lyons (1846-1915). Arthur was born in Surrey Hills on 12 Jun 1920. He became a motor mechanic / welder and lived at 55 Sunbury Crescent. The donation was made while he was in hospital. He died shortly afterwards (23 Sep 1990). Donation was finalised by a neighbour, Mrs Florence Ann Armitstead, wife of Glen Victor Armitstead. Glen was a local hairdresser. They moved to 11 Sunbury Crescent after their marriage in 1939. He was born in Kew in 1899 (died in 1967) and married Elsie Florence Finlayson in 1925. They had a son and daughter. In 1937 the family returned to Melbourne from Edinburgh. He became Lt Colonel of the 2nd 9th Field Ambulance, 2nd AIF in WW2. He was taken POW on the fall of Singapore and there is a portrait of him by Murray Griffin done in Changi. Dr Lorimer Grant Morton (1904-1989) graduated in 1931 and was registered at 627 Whitehorse Road in that year until c1937. Dr Alan Herbert McNaughton graduated in 1932 and was the general practitioner during the WW2. He is listed at the address in the 1942 and 1943 electoral roll. He married Nancy Winifred Bottomley in 1940. Dr Jack Ramsay Collie (1914-1990) was a general practitioner at 627 Whitehorse Road from c1954-1980. He served in RAN in WW2; married Mary Sewell Graham in 1945 and had a son and a daughter. 627 Whitehorse Road probably ceased as a medical practice after his retirement. This example is from a later date than the Surrey Hills Medical Centre (SHMC) at 174 Union Road, which was purpose-built for Dr James Landells Blakie in c1911. The Collins No. 2 Woollen Mill building dates from around the 1930s, however related buildings at that site were first constructed from around 1918, that was the Marnock Vale Wool Scouring Works. The Union Woollen Mill founded in the 1870s by William Henry Collins, a major Geelong industrial enterprise, was among the local firms which flourished during the First World War period. From 1914-1918 Collins Bros. concentrated on equipment for the A. I. F. However, afterwards Collins Bros. Pty. Ltd. specialised in the manufacture of flannels and blankets. From 1920 to 1938 the output was increased by fifty percent, and the number of employees rose to 200. The Collins Bros. No. 2 Mill was established in Bridge Street, Newtown. The proprietary brand 'Physician' became well and favourably known throughout Australia source: Heritage Victoria The Collins Bros Mills No. 1 and No. 2 hired over 250 people, and produced between 40,000 and 60,000 blankets for both the Australian market and for overseas export. Built c 1889. The current Church of Christ is on the left. One of the foundation families was that of Mr and Mrs John Woodhead, who owned the land from Union Road to Warrigal Road and from Canterbury to Bona Vista Avenue in 1885. Mr Woodhead built 'Kirkland' in Union Road - in 1889/90. The land for the church was given by Mr Woodhead. In the foreground is Dr Blakie's first surgery, later the Police Station, then a Service station. Behind and to the left are the two railway station buildings. On the horizon and in front of the pine trees is 'Montalto', home of the Hansen family, later Dr Box (demolished). Two storey terrace of shops in front of this is Hansen's Terrace.
