Letter - From Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce
Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today. This item is significant because it documents actions taken by the Falls Creek Tourist Area Management Committee in their role overseeing the Tourist Area.A framed letter to Bob Hymans from Falls Creek Chamber of Commerce inviting him to be part of the "Aussie Host" seminar to be held at Falls Creek. All Chamber Members were being urged to participate in the seminars. Businesses which sent 60% of their staff or more of their employees through the workshops would qualify as an Aussie Host Business.falls creek tourist area management committee, falls creek administration, bob hymans -

When Carl Sandner began Sandner and Sons Eucalyptus Distillery in 1875, he probably had no idea his archives would end up in the National Library. The distillery operated until 1967 and the Uley Street site was the subject of archaeological monitoring in 2011 prior to Bendigo’s new ambulance station being built there. But his great great grandson Alec Sandner handed over some mint-condition documents that he has held on to for many years. “I had this tin and the more I opened it, the more interested in it I became,” Mr Sandner said. “There was a letter from the Kaiser in 1888 because the business had written to them asking them to endorse. They had politely refused. “There was also a letter from the Italian consulate saying the King of Italy was satisfied with the product he received. From then the advertising said the products had been approved by the King of Italy.” At its peak, Sandner and Sons had agents up and down the east coast of Australia as well as in New Zealand and the United States of America. https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au/story/3854951/sandner-and-sons-to-be-preserved-in-national-library/ Rectangular cream coloured box with attached fold back lid. Book, Exercise book Winnie Goodall, Early 20th century
... School. The material in the book mostly consists of letter... School. The material in the book mostly consists of letter ...This exercise book has been used by Winnifred (Winnie) Goodall in 1916 when she was a pupil at the Warrnambool Technical School. The material in the book mostly consists of letter-writing practice for business purposes. The Goodalls were pioneer settlers in the Warrnambool district with William and Ellen Goodall arriving in the area in the late 1840s. Eventually they had a property named Wanstead on the Allansford Road in East Warrnambool. One son, William, was an early manager of the Framlingham Aboriginal Settlement. Another son, Thomas, was a Warrnambool law clerk and Winnie, (born 1901 to mother Leah), was his granddaughter. The Warrnambool Technical School was established in 1913.This exercise book is of interest as an example of school work completed by a Warrnambool Technical School student in 1916. It is also of interest because it belonged to Winnie Goodall, a member of an important pioneering family in the Warrnambool district. This is a school exercise book with a cardboard cover and 17 double pages. The cover has a mottled pattern of brown and mauve and the pages have been attached by metal staples but the staples have been removed. The pages have blue ruled lines with handwritten material in blue and black ink. Some of the pages have red hand-drawn lines. The cover is slightly torn. On the first page two cartoon sketches from a newspaper have been pasted in. The front cover has a printed label in blue and white colouring pasted on, with handwritten information on the label. There is a has a circular black , white and blue logo pasted on the inside front cover.‘Exercise Book Written by Winnie Goodall, Commenced 9th February 1916’. Photograph, Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus Shop, Sussex Street, Linton
Shire of Grenville Hall and Angus shop, Sussex Street, Linton. Dating the photograph: The photograph can be dated to after 1887, when John Angus purchased the shop building (originally owned by Thomas Austin) from B. N. Dodd. 'W. Angus': From 1887 until the late 1890s the shop was run by John Angus' wife Wilhelmina Angus, who often advertised her business in the local newspaper, the 'Grenville Standard' (see photograph of advertisement, Registration no. 2019-346). It is not known when Mrs Angus retired, but it is understood that her son William then took over the shop. Elsie Jennings, an Angus descendant, recalled in a letter to LDHS that her uncle had run a draper's shop at this site. (See letter in "Linton - Township History - Recollections and reminiscences' file.) It is not clear whether the "W. Angus" in the sign refers to Wilhelmina Angus or to William Angus.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph, which has been mounted on white card. The photograph shows a two-storey brick building, and next to it a double-fronted shop. The two-storey building is the original Grenville Shire Hall, built in the mid 1860s. The fence outside it is being used to post notices. Two large pine trees are between the fence and the building. The smaller shop next to the hall has a verandah supported by round timber posts, and signs across the front of the verandah read "Tailor" and "W. Angus". Two men engaged in conversation with each other are standing to the left under the verandah. There is a flagpole attached to one of the gate posts of the hall, and there is a telegraph pole in the street in front of the hall.w. angus, william angus, wilhelmina angus (née statemann), buildings, shire of grenville hall, shops, shire hall, town hall -

Functional object - Wooden pre-decimal pricing stamps from the J. Mann & Sons General Store, Wodonga, pre-1966
The wooden pricing stamps are part of the 'Mann' collection at the Wodonga Historical Society and were used in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in Wodonga High Street, prior to the introduction of the decimal currency in Australia in 1966. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the steel and rural produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006.The collection of wooden pre-decimal pricing stamps have local significance due to their use in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in High St, Wodonga pre-1966, and their association with the prominent Mann family in Wodonga. They also have national and international significance as examples of the use of the pre-decimal currency system in commerce/local businesses.Six wooden pre-decimal pricing stamps from the J. Mann & Sons General Store, Wodonga which are part of a large collection of wooden pricing stamps. The pre-decimal prices are printed in black on a circular white background at one end and at the other end, the embossed/raised price is used for the stamp. The letter 'd' in some of the prices stands for pence and comes from the Latin 'denarius.Pre-decimal prices.mann, general store, high street, wodonga, commerce, local business, pricing stamps, pre-decimal currency, j. mann & sons
