This booklet aims to give a brief outline of Port Fairy’s history for the benefit of visitors. Port Fairy was an early sealing and whaling town with white settlement established by 1836. Ephemera - Serviette Warrnambool Football Club dinner 1933, 1933
Warrnambool Football Club was formed in June 1861 making it one of the earliest clubs formed in Australia and many of the earliest players and associates were members also of the Warrnambool Cricket club which was established around 1854. Games of various sized teams were played in the early years and it was in 1889 that the Warrnambool and District Football Association was formed. The year marked with the celebration of this dinner, was important in the club’s history as it marked their entry into the wider Hampden football league, where it still plays to the present day. As the venue for this dinner, the Commercial Hotel on the corner of Liebig and Timor Sts, was commonly used in the early days as a club meeting place. The history of the club was recorded in “The Birth of the Blues” by Ron Cole, Harry Keilar, Ron McCorkell and Ian Wright, in 2007.The Warrnambool Football club is one of the longest surviving sporting clubs in the Warrnambool district and as such, would have involved or touched the lives of many of its residents. This serviette marks a dinner which was an important event in the history of the Warrnambool Football Club. Programme - Folio, Musical Monologues and other sheet titles, Circa late 19th century early 20th century
This is a collection of music, written by well- known composers, who were popular in the late 19th century. the music contained in this folio was popular and well known to a large number of people. It contains pieces such as “The Lesson of the Water mill” written by young English poet Sarah Doudney when she was 15 years old to “The Menuet” which was written by I.J. Paderewski who was one of the most loved Polish composers who travelled the World entertaining with his music. He came to Australia in the early 1900’s for a concert tour. Six music sheets covered with brown paper and two with newspaper towards the rear. The individual pieces of music all have a coloured cover, the first being, “The lesson of the Water Mill” by Bond Andrews. The last in the folio is Menuet by I.J. Paderewski. The pieces have been hand-stitched together with cotton. Textile - Wallpaper, Wallpaper fragment 1854, c1854
Wallpaper fragment from an early workman's cottage in Weller St, Geelong West built in 1854. This property was refurbished following its sale in the early 1990s. Over time many layers of wallpaper had been pasted to the original paper. The wallpaper was damp and hanging off the walls. It was removed to reveal packing case 'slats' on the stud wall. When the skirting board was removed the original wallpaper was revealed. Although not a Warrnambool artefact, the Weller St property was owned by a local resident. Footwear - Child's shoes
These shoes which would have been a child's first shoes are soft leather and possibly date from around the late 19th or early 20th century. We have no knowledge unfortunately as to whom they may have belonged. Baby's first shoes are often kept as a keepsake .These little shoes have significance from a social and historic viewpoint. A pair of leather maroon shoes with front straps which fasten in the front with a button. The inside of the shoes is cream in colour. The upper leather is quite soft . Book, Broph: the story of Father Tom Brophy, 2014
This is the story of the work of Father Tom Brophy, mainly concentrating on his work with youth in Warrnambool. Ordained as a Catholic priest in 1962, Fr Brophy worked in Ballarat and established a Ballarat Youth Centre and a Hostel for young men. He was moved to Warrnambool and arrived in early 1972. Although in Warrnambool for just two years Fr Brophy had an enormous impact in the community, establishing the Freedom Zone Youth Centre and the Warrnambool Home for Boys. He died at the early age of 45 and was buried in Warrnambool with a large number of local people attending his funeral. A Brophy Memorial Hostel was established and later developments include a Youth Centre in Timor Street and the present day Brophy Family and Youth Services organization. This book is of some importance as it outlines the work in Warrnambool of Father Tom Brophy, a Catholic priest whose name has become synonymous in Warrnambool with youth projects. He is one of the important community workers in Warrnambool in the 20th century and this book details his contribution and impact.This is a paper back book with a blue/yellow cover with a photograph of Father Tom Brophy in bluish tones on the front cover. This book contains a number of plates taken from paintings by Raphael, Poussin, Da Vinci Ferrari, Perugino and numerous engravers including J Cooper J L Williams W. Meason and H Shaw. As well as the large number of plates there is also much ornamentation on initial letters medallions and margins. It was a gift to George Rolfe who resided for many years in Warrnambool. Alphabetical entries about many topics from fruit trees to Legislation, to Senate of America George Rolfe came to Warrnambool in 1872 and by 1883 was well established on the banks of the Hopkins River at Lyndoch. In 1884 he purchased Shipley which also had frontage to the Hopkins River. He participated in the social and sporting life of Warrnambool and was a keen rower.An interesting collection of thoughts and life of one of the early merchants and farmers of the area. Mixed media - Calendar, P L Phillips & Co, 1919
Mr P L Phillips operated a general store in Liebig Street in the early part of the 20th Century. He was a highly regarded member of the community. He was community minded and promoted support for local industry, advertising his locally made or sourced products. He and his wife were involved in the Congregational church and music. He was mentioned in The Warrnambool Standard as arranging an Honour Roll for the Aboriginal soldiers who fought in WW1, with two losing their lives. The Nestle Company has been a long established business and major employer in Warrnambool (Dennington) since the early 20th century until it was purchased by Fonterra around 2000. The significance of this item lies in the connection of a large company with a strong presence in Warrnambool, and a small business combining to promote a patriotic theme which would have been very important in the days proceeding the First World War. Light white card with details enclosed within a light grey frame and text. Nestle Milk is in large text across the top, above a coloured picture depicting soldier and sailor in uniform in oval with kangaroo and emu in gold. A brown bulldog stands above in front of the Australian flag and on top of the Union Jack. Nestle product advertising is on both sides of this picture. Calendar details are at the bottom with P.L. Photograph - Wangoom Methodist Church members, 1888
This is a photograph of those attending the Wangoom Methodist church picnic and christening in 1888. The Wangoom Methodist church was established in 1859 on the Wangoom Road. It was a weather board building seating 100 people. The Gothic windows and the pulpit came from the first Warrnambool Wesleyan chapel (1850) The church closed in 1963. The Christening was of a Dixon child and the Dixon family were early members of the Wangoom church congregation. This photograph is of considerable significance as it documents some of the congregation of the Wangoom Methodist church in 1888 and the clothing worn at the time. This is a faded photograph mounted on a piece of cardboard. It depicts gentlemen, ladies and children standing and sitting in front of a building. The ladies and children are wearing hats and the gentlemen are dressed in suits.Two ladies are holding babies. A separate item is a piece of brown paper with blue ink hand writing. John Ward came to the Warrnambool district in 1853. He established a grocery business on the corner of Jamieson Street and Canterbury Road, known as Ward's corner and later Rust's corner.He was three times Mayor of Warrnambool and was an important early historian. He compiled a history,completed in 1928, of the Warrnambool Methodist church. This DVD is a digital record of that history.This DVD featuring the history of the Warrnambool Methodist church is retained as a comprehensive history of one of Warrnambool's churches. They are the handwritten history of Methodism in Warrnambool (produced in the 1930s?) by John Ward, and early settler, North Warrnambool shopkeeper and an ex-councillor and mayor. The books contain over 100 original photographs of people connected to the Methodist Church, both clerical and lay, including women, and other Warrnambool photographs. There is also much written material on all the people connected to the church. The books were given to Warrnambool & District Historical Society Inc in March 2013 by the Uniting Church together with DVD with a digital copy of the photographs and a typed copy of the writings. The Shire of Warrnambool operated toll gates from 1866 to 1869 as a means of revenue rai sing for road construction. There were three toll gate locations – on the main Belfast (Port Fairy) Road at Dennington Bridge, on the Woodford Road at Russells Creek and on the Geelong Road at the Allansford Bridge. The toll gates were unpopular and unprofitable for the lessees as travellers were able to avoid the tax by skirting around the gates. They had toll houses besides the gates. The printers of these tickets, Fairfax and Laurie were the lessees at the time of the Warrnambool Examiner newspaper. This paper, founded by Richard Osburne and John Wilkinson, and published with some gaps from 1851 to 1880, is a key source today of Warrnambool’s history at that time. These toll gates tickets are significant because:- 1. They date back to the 1860s and were only issued from 1866 to 1869. 2. They are the only artefacts we hold of the time when toll gates were operating in our local district 3. They are the best example of how the Shire of Warrnambool in its early history raised revenue for road building and maintenance This is a book of toll gate tickets for sale at the Main Belfast (Port Fairy) Road Toll Gate. The tickets (about 50) are yellow and in duplicate with provision to detach the outer ticket for the purchaser to keep. The tickets (two shillings and sixpence) are bound with an adhesive tape and the cover is mottled in pattern (brown and blue). There are also four loose tickets in blue (3 shillings). One is mounted on a Swintons store label (6 pence) and four are mounted on cardboard (2 shillings, sixpence, and two shillings and sixpence) and six are loose (three shillings, two shillings and sixpence and threepence). The Belfast Road tickets are yellow, green, blue and cream and the Woodford Road one is white. All have black printing. There is also an undated newspaper cutting with information on the toll gate tickets. ... Street (south of Merri St) Warrnambool great-ocean-road ...This is an early sharpening stone of unknown origin . Stones have been used for hundreds of years to sharpen metal blades on a wide range of tools from scythes, scissors plane blades and knives. More recent examples come with particular grades according to the fineness of the grit in the stone.This item is of antiquarian interest only and is kept for displays. Functional object - Padlock
This padlock has been made by Jacksons Locks which is one of Australia’s oldest lock makers. Francis Jackson established the business in 1883 in Launceston, Tasmania and established a reputation for skilled craftsmanship and durable products. It is not known how the Historical Society acquired the item or who owned it,This lock has no known local connection but it is of interest as an example of an early lock. It may have been used to lock a sea trunk or an office building or a safe.This is a brass padlock in a half oval shape with a keyhole in the front and the locking mechanism at the top. Domestic object - Card, visiting. Blank cards with black border, Early 20th century
These visiting cards have been commercially produced for those who have suffered a bereavement and wish to leave a visiting card when calling on friends, business acquaintances etc. They would have been used in the 19th century and up to about the 1930s. These cards have no known provenance but are of interest because they are a good example of bereavement customs a hundred years ago and earlier. These are two packs of visiting cards, white with black borders. They are made of lightweight card and enclosed in an open cardboard envelope and these are further contained in another cardboard envelope. Originally the envelopes contained 50 cards each but there are now 49 in one box and 41 in the other. The boxes are white with black and white printing and ornamental decorations. Domestic object - Pocket watch, key
This watch key is inscribed with the name of ‘T. Ferguson’, a watchmaker and jeweller from Warrnambool. He may have been the maker of the key or the distributor. No information has been found on ‘T. Ferguson’ but he may have been related to William Ferguson, a well-known Warrnambool watchmaker, jeweller and oculist in the early 1900s. William Ferguson was a Warrnambool Councillor and Mayor. His shop was in Timor Street.This watch key is of minor interest as one with some provenance. It is of Warrnambool origin. It also has some social significance as an example of the type of pocket watch and key used in the early 20th century. Functional object - Printing blocks Barnard, Early 20th century
These items have no known provenance and no information has been found on the Barnards on the printing blocks, delivery paper and stamps. The stamp for ‘W.I.O. Barnard’ was sent to an address in Camberwell so it is presumed that the Barnard family members were in Melbourne and not in the Warrnambool district.The only interest in these items is in the printing blocks and stamps. They are good examples of the type of printing used in the early 20th century and the type of stamp used by individuals for letterheads, visiting cards, personal items etc. There are 5 objects in this collection:- 1. Container - Boracic Acid Tin: Kennedy Chemist, Early 20th century
R. F. Kennedy operated as a pharmacy in the late 19th and early 20th century in Timor Street Warrnambool. Mr Kennedy manufactured a large number of drugs and perfumes on a wholesale basis as well as very impressive retail business. Around the mid 1880’s they were shipping 5000 dozen bottles of Janos salts annually. Boracic acid was one such product which was commonly used product as an insecticide, herbicide and in cleaning products.A common item which was manufactured by one of the largest manufacturing chemists of the area. Alex Anderson was a plumber and gasfitter who operated from 178 Fairy Street, Warrnambool, in the early part of the 20th century. They made and repaired water tanks, barrels milk and cream cans, chimneys and cattle troughs.A common item which was manufactured locally.Round copper kettle with lid and handle with folded metal edges. Administrative record - Ledger, Early 20th century
This ledger is unused but has been produced to be used as a financial ledger for an Australian business probably in the early 20th Century. This item has no known local provenance but is retained as a very fine example of a vintage business ledger. It will be useful for display.This book has a cover of wood which in turn is covered with brown suede and burgundy leather .There is an inset of the burgundy leather with gold printing and border in the centre of the front cover. The labels on the spine have been worn away. Insides of the covers are pages mottled with a burgundy pattern. The pages have black printing and are ruled with pink lines. Postcard - A fag after a fight, !914-1918
This is number 13 of 27 items in the Daisy Vickers collection of World War One memorabilia. These items were sent or given to Daisy Ogier (nee Vickers) during World War One by Corporal Arthur Anderson who enlisted from Warrnambool in 1915 at the age of 21. He served in Egypt and France and returned to Australia in 1919. Daisy Ogier (1907-1987) was a student and then a teacher at Warrnambool Technical School with her early teaching years there from 1925 to 1936 and in 1949. She became the head mistress from 1950 to 1963 and in 1968. She officially retired in 1976. Daisy Vickers was one of the best loved and dedicated teachers that the school ever had. She married the Reverend Fred Ogier and continued her association with the school after her husband's death.This card is interesting because of its association with World War One and with two local people: Daisy Vickers and Arthur Anderson. This is number 22 of 27 items in the Daisy Vickers collection of World War One memorabilia. These items were sent or given to Daisy Ogier (nee Vickers) during World War One by Corporal Arthur Anderson who enlisted from Warrnambool in 1915 at the age of 21. He served in Egypt and France and returned to Australia in 1919. Daisy Ogier (1907-1987) was a student and then a teacher at Warrnambool Technical School with her early teaching years there from 1925 to 1936 and in 1949. She became the head mistress from 1950 to 1963 and in 1968. She officially retired in 1976. Daisy Vickers was one of the best loved and dedicated teachers that the school ever had. She married the Reverend Fred Ogier and continued her association with the school after her husband's death. This card is interesting because of its association with World War One and with two local people: Daisy Vickers and Arthur Anderson.
