Marg Card unsuccessfully contested the 1998 federal election for the seat of Ballarat. She served as a councillor and mayor at the Moorabool Shire. Dianne Hadden was an independent member of the Victorian Legislative Council. She exited the Australian Labor Party in 2005. She stood for the seat of Ballarat East at the Victorian Legislative Assembly in 2006, but was unsuccessful. Karen Overington was a former welfare worker and served as a councillor and mayor (Sebastopol Borough) before she was elected to federal parliament in 1999. Karen did not contest the 2010 election. She died from cancer in 2011. Terry Bracks is the wife of former Victorian Premier, Steve Bracks. She is actively involved in arts and theatre organisations in Victoria and is a board member of Breast Cancer Network Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive, and the Australian Children’s Television Foundation. Jenny Beacham is a former Labor state secretary and was an ALP candidate for Ballarat in 1996. Catherine King is the federal ALP member for Ballarat and has been in office since 2001. She was a cabinet minister in the second Rudd ministry and is now part of the Shadow Cabinet. Betty Borchers worked as a legal secretary. She was active in the Ballarat ALP and is the wife of Norm Borchers. Joan Brown was a passionate and active member of the Labor Party in Ballarat. Lindsay Tanner was a member of the House of Representatives holding the seat of Melbourne for the period 1993-2010. He resigned from politics prior to the 2010 election. He is a lawyer who has worked as an articled clerk and was State Secretary of the Clerks Union before entering politics. He was Minister for Finance during the Rudd-Gillard years of government. The Norman Oliver collection. Norman Oliver was three times Mayor of Bendigo - 1950-51, 1964-65, 1970-71. Eight pages of typed notes for a speech titled 'Address to Public Meeting Eaglehawk Town Hall May 18 1955'. This was a campaign speech in the Victorian State Election 1955. Oliver was standing as a candidate for the Country Party. Topics he covered : his personal abilities, housing and new home construction, sewerage, and industries. Gough Whitlam was the ALP Prime Minister of Australia from 1972-1975. It was the first ALP government since Ben Chifley's government was defeated in 1951. The book is an historical account of the Whitlam government years. Whitlam was dismissed, in controversial circumstances, by the governor general (Sir John Kerr) and Malcolm Fraser (Liberal Opposition Leader) was appointed as caretaker Prime Minister.. The Electoral Act 1856 was passed through Parliament o March 13, 1856. Victoria was the first Australian colony, and the first legislature anywhere in the world, to adopt the practice of the secret ballot. Victoria's constitution prescribed that the Parliament was to be bicameral, consisting of an upper house, the Legislative Council and a lower house, Legislative Assembly. Men were entitled to vote according to the qualifications described in this book - the right to vote in each house was dependent on status - educational qualifications, income and for either literacy. Two names are registered for the Orbost district: James Dickson and J.C. McLeod.This item is a useful research tool.A 16 pp paper back book which has a clear plastic cover. The covers are beige coloured with the title "Gippsland Electoral Rolls for 1856 and Stock Assessment Payable" in blak print. On the left hand side is a vertical pattern in black print. The book contains an alphabetical list of persons claiming or supposed to be entitled to Vote in the Election of a Member for the District. It lists the needed qualifications of electors followed by the Voters Roll for Legislative Assembly, 1856 and the Voters Roll for Legislative Council, 1856 . Copy of letter from the Hann Council, January 1909, regarding Almond Williams election to the Shire of Hann, Maytown Council. Hann Shire (1879-1919) was the local government area for the Palmer River goldfield, between 70 km and 150 km west of Cape Tribulation. Access from the coast was via Cooktown, 100 km to the north-east. In 1872 an expedition led by William Hann explored the interior of Cape York Peninsula.
