In 1902 a badge was urgently sought for the Australian contingents raised after Federation for Service in South Africa during Boer War. Probably the most widely-accepted version of the origin of this badge is that which attributes the selection of its design to a British Officer, Major General Sir Edward Hutton, KCB, KCMG, the newly appointed commander-in-chief of the Australian Forces. He had earlier recieved as a gift from Brigadier General Joseph Gordon, a military acquaintance of long standing, a "Trophy of Arms" comprising mounted cut and thrust swords and triangular Martini Henri bayonets arranged in a semicircle around a brass crown. To Major General Hutton the shield was symbolic of the co-ordination of the Naval and Military Forces of the Commonwealth. The rising sun badge has been worn by Australian soldiers since 1902. Thus it is a symbol that links soldiers across several generations, and across many conflicts and peace-keeping missions. Its symbolism is at once warlike and hopeful, as it incorporates an array of bayonets to create the form of the rising sun. At the centre sits a crown, symbol of a soldier's allegiance to the Australian nation and the British monarch. Small bronze coloured rising sun badge from a slouch hat. Robin William Smallwood was Dean of the Faculty of Anaesthetists at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons from 1986 - 1987. Smallwood died 6 October 1987 after a brief illness. Smallwood completed medicine at the University of Melbourne in 1958 and decided on anaesthesia as a career, attaining his FFARACS in 1964. The Orton Medal was awarded posthumously.Gold coloured oval shaped medal with the Faculty of Anaesthetists coat of arms on the obverse in relief. The owner's name has been engraved into the reverse. There is a thick, ribbed, navy blue ribbon connected to the medal by a circular ring at the top. These photographs were taken at Flag Day, an annual sports competition between the Army Survey Regiment and the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The two RASvy units took turns each year to host the event. The day competition usually comprised basketball, cross country, golf, sailing, squash softball, tennis, touch football, tug-of-war and volleyball. The evening competition often included darts, carpet bowls, hookey, quoits and snooker. The scoreboard in the background in photo .11P indicated an emphatic victory for the Army Survey Regiment.This is a set of 13 photographs of Flag Day, Army Survey Regiment versus the School of Military Survey, at Bendigo on the 10th of October 1986. The medal was presented to James Boyd, first Dux of Ballarat College in 1868 for his excellence in the Christmas Examinations. James passed his matriculation exams in the same year at 14 years of age. Known at school as Boyd 'Major', James went on to practise as a solicitor at Port Fairy. James attended many school functions throughout his life. Old Collegians re-presented this medal to James during the school's 50th anniversary celebration. The medal was re-presented in a silver plated box inscribed with the school crest and motto and the words 'Re-presented to / JAMES BOYD / December 1918 / on the anniversary of his Duxship of / BALLARAT COLLEGE / from Old Collegians. The re-boxed medal was presented to James Boyd at Speech Night 1918. 293 Hughie McLean was a Victorian born in Tamagulla, Victoria. Hughie McLean was living in Adelaide when he enlisted on 30 June 1915 and joined 'K' Group Base Infantry. 293 Hughie McLean was subsequently posted to 32 Australian Infantry Battalion and Killed in Action in France on the 19 July 1916. 32 Australian Intantry Battalion was raised as part of the 8th Brigade at Mitcham, South Australia.293 Hughie McLean was a Victorian man who was living in Adelaide at the time of his enlistment 30 June 1915.
