The Everard Memorial was officially dedicated on 22 April 2004 by Betty Lynch OAM, daughter of William Everard and sister of Blanche Shallard. Newsletter No. 156 May 2004 THE MT. EVERARD CONNECTION Mt Everard in the Kinglake National Park commemorates William Hugh Everard, State Member for Evelyn and father of our member Blanche Shallard who died some eighteen months ago. Doug and Gwen Orford represented the Society at the unveiling of an interpretive sign at Mt Everard. Doug has written this account of the event on 22nd April. We all travelled to Kinglake and met near the Fire Station where we were picked up by two buses provided by Parks Victoria to take us to the top of Mt Everard. There we enjoyed morning tea (needed to as we from·the first bus had to walk the last hill when the bus broke down) while we waited for the official party to arrive. While waiting we had a look at the open four sided interpretive feature donated by Mrs Betty Lynch OAM (sister of Blanche) in memory of their father Bill Everard who was the State Member for the area for many years and in recognition of Kinglake National Park's 75th birthday. The information display describes the Blue Ant Butterfly, the Coconut Ant and the Swamp Pea, all of which are indigenous to the area. The Chief Executive of Parks Victoria welcomed everyone on this warm windy day after which Betty explained how the blue ant butterfly cohabited with the ants and survived. The swamp pea is described as a rare indigenous plant to the area. She also spoke of her father's interest in the area. Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. It was in McKenzie Street Ballarat. His son Jeffrey also became a printer - letterpress, offset and screen printer. The business became Zilles Printers/Graphics and was in Armstrong Street and later Bell Street Ballarat. The Bulldog Engineering Company emerged around 1886. J Abraham began the operation building windmills and pumps. An employee, J F Osbourne, purchased the business when Abraham died in 1914. Windmills were still produced but Osbourne began to manufacture the "Bulldog" oil engine towards the end of the first world war. The Bulldog engine production was around 400. Of these there were 40 with wavy spokes. Some writer have been using Ballarat Bulldog as the brand name. This is incorrect, it was just Bulldog, made in Ballarat. This manual was produced by the Mission to raise funds for the French Red Cross. A first edition was printed in 1915, and then a second and a third. 6000 were at least sold. This sample, held at the Rare Books Collection at Monash University is only one of two known, the second one is held at the Australian War Museum. It is mentioned in Minutes Meetings and in a few articles but the author is unknown. Miss Godfrey spoke French fluently and gave lessons at the YMCA along with Miss Weigall (probably Nancy, sister of Joan Lindsay). She also was friend with the French community having been invited to the Alliance Francaise (Frederica Godfrey was Secretary in 1902), to the Crivellis (Madame Crivelli created the French Red Cross), and probably with the Pignolet family, whose daughters had a French school and one of them had written a manual of French (also held at Monash for comparison maybe).The Ladies from the Guild were educated women and had travelled to even studied in Europe, like Miss Godfrey were able to speak French. In 1915 she and two other ladies gave French classes in the YMCA training camp. With her network Miss Godfrey knew Charlotte Crivelli, a French lady, who created a branch of the French Red Cross in Melbourne. The Department of Defence is considering opening Fortuna Villa for public inspection before vacating the property, likely in September or October, as part of community consultation. This is an example of Melbourne Legacy promotional material that was issued to inform the public on the work of Legacy. One edition was included as a supplement in Mufti, (a veterans publication) in September 1982. The first edition featured Prince Phillip and the words he spoke during a telecast in 1980. Legatee Ken Green was the president. The edition in September 1982 had definitions of key words such as Legatee, Junior Legatee and an explanation of where money came from. It featured a photo of Alisa Watson of the Youth Leadership Group. Edition No 4 was from the Diamond Jubilee Year in 1983, it featured an article on Legatee Frank Doolan and the foundation of Legacy.
