The photo was taken in Amesbury England in the latter part of 1916. The letter is from William Henry Myers No 594 to his Mother describing the photo as a “break up” and he looked like he got a fright in it. It is believed he is 1st on right rear. Part of the Reverend Chaplain Major Thomas Bruce Williams, No 556101, Collection.A cloth badge featuring an embroidered Christian Chaplain's insignia on a black background. The insignia features an embroidered silver coloured Maltese Cross surrounded by a gold and green wreath and topped with a Queen's Crown. In the centre of the Maltese Cross is a purple coloured quatrefoil. This is encircled with a purple coloured ring bearing the motto 'IN THIS SIGN CONQUER' in gold lettering. Part of the Reverend Chaplain Major Thomas Bruce Williams, No 556101, Collection.Green d canvas bag closed with a heavy duty plastic zipper. Handles are made from thick dark green canvas. Each is reinforced with khaki coloured stitching. A clear plastic pocket is sewn onto one side to house a name card. Below this is a side pocket closed via a plastic zipper. Equipment - TRAINING STAND FOR .303 IN LEE ENFIELD RIFLE, 21 Bn. AIF, c1915-1918
This is a WW1 stand for mounting a .303 rifle, to train soldiers in shooting.This device consists of two parts; 1. Top part has an adjustable 'arm' . At the end of each arm is a leather covered 'U' section. Under the arm is a large threaded rod and knurled knob, this is to adjust elevation. At the center of the arm is a pivot that can lock into position. This top section is mounted on a tripod, it can be removed. 2. This is a steel tripod made out of 'T' section steel. There are fixed cross braces about 40 cm fom bottom. The top has a tube section within which the upper arm mounts.Marked on one leg is "XXI". Believed to be from 21st Bn. Glanfield Keith Emonson No 543 B Coy age 21 years, appointed 2nd Lieutenant, WIA 9.12.1916 GSW Head and Right Thorax severe, awarded “MC” 8/9th. 12.1916, appointment terminated 22.6.1917. These relate to the past service of SQLDR Victor James in 1946. His interpreter friends appear to have been Mr. & Mrs Lo. Miss Vera Wong, typist. There are some photos of Chinese Nationalist Army soldiers, The photos of surrendering Japanese Army Soldiers appears to have been taken by a trained photographer.This photo album is a maroon dimpled cover. It used to be bound with two screws on left side. The cover flexes about 3 cm from the left. The rear cover is of the same material. Embossed on front cover is an image of a leaping horse in a circle with the words "Photo Album" below. Inside are a large quantity of B & W photos of the Japanese surrender of Hong Kong and Kowloon.
