The Tasmanian Parliament made provision for 'the teaching of the principles of technical education' in the Education Act (1885). Regulations specifying courses of instruction and establishing a committee of Technical Education followed in 1887. The first government Technical School opened in Hobart in 1888, offering evening classes in technical art and applied mechanics. Two months later a school was established in Launceston. Small classes were also held in regional centres and Schools of Mines were established in Zeehan, Queenstown and Beaconsfield. Curricula quickly expanded to include subjects ranging from mineralogy and metallurgy to commercial economy, beginning the long tradition of directly linking the schools with the interests of business and industry. The Technical Schools largely worked independently, with varying degrees of success, until 1916 when a Commission of Inquiry recommended the integration of technical education into the state education system. The outcome was a new Technical Education Branch, formed to administer Technical Schools and Schools of Mines and to provide a structured technical education system, comprising distinct trade certificates and applied sciences, engineering and arts diploma courses. Charles Walker, Son of Samuel Walker, 112 Lyons St S; Prev S School 33 Upper VI Class entered Ballarat College in 1885, peer year 1889. He was awared the Old Collegians Cup in 1887. The cup was returned to the school in 1985 by Mrs Hilda Rehfisch. The Old Collegians Cup was an athletic award and highly prestigious. The Veterans Plate trophy was awarded at the Annual Sports Day. Thomas Anderson (BD 30/06/1886) entered Ballarat College in 1903 as a 17yo. He was the son of J W T Anderson of Waubra and had previously attended Waubra SS VI Class. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. In 1901 Andrew Anderson was President of the Ballarat School of Mines. At the height of its world wide fame the annual report states: 'That the public recognises and appreciates the importance of the School, is evident by the large additions to the class rolls - (many of the students have come long distances, from England, India, South Africa, new South Wales, Queensland, West Australia, South Australia and Tasmania,) which give ample proof, if such were necessary, of the wide spread reputation of the School.'8 page booklet relating to the Ballarat School of Mines in the year 1901. Lorraine (Frances) Grenfell (current brigade member) Joined June 1969 - married to Joe Grenfell who was a permanent officer until retiring and becoming a volunteer Joined the Bendigo auxiliary in 1969 because her husband was a Permanent staff member and had 3 children: Paul, Michelle and Jacinta. Moved to Wangaratta in 1977 when her husband was transferred here. Was Secretary of the 'ladies auxiliary' (later called the classed as the brigade auxiliary) form 1994 - 1995.
