This desk was donated to the MTSV in 2017 by a descendant of Padre Oliver, Chaplain from 1930-1960.This desk belonged to Rodney Oliver and is believed to have been used by Padre Oliver and his wife while Chaplain, and the family resided at the MTS and thereafter in subsequent parish postings. The desk makes a link with one of the longest serving Chaplains who had a significant influence through the intense period of operations early - mid 20th C. The Padre's influence was substantial. The desk is also believed to have been used by son Rodney Oliver who also served the Mission as Chairman in the later 20th C.A four drawer leather topped desk with detachable unit comprising double sliding door lockable cabinet with small bookshelf backed with shallow pediment. Sorting / sectioned pigeonhole interiors to the top cabinets see images. The main table desk appears to be of a different wood with green leather inset to top surface and heavy legs. Drawers with heavily decorated brass handles. This canister is part of a complete set of a German gas mask dating to the First World War. This canister housed a mask, filter, and spare goggle lenses. Metal cylindrical canister with removable lid attached via a metal square loop. Lid has small lip for user to grip to open and on interior has two soldered metal wires crossed in an X shape. Exterior of canister has two loops through which khaki-coloured canvas straps are threaded, adjustable via a metal buckle; a further loop at the base is unused/attached. Black and white photograph of the interior a W2 end saloon showing the longitudinal seats upholstered in leather. Photo taken at Preston Workshops, shows interior fit out at the time of construction, with central strap hangers (leather), light fittings. Tram would appear to have been service for some time as it is fitted with advertisements and M&MTB posters. Destination City, 4th Edition page 42 notes that W2 329, 331, 332, 335 were fitted with leather seating in 1929. Naval Ratings Drill Trousers
The Royal Australian Navy Uniforms are based on the uniform of the Royal Navy. They reflect traditions that can be traced back to the Royal Navy (England) and demonstrate the relationship between the two. These drill trousers are one of four parts to a Naval Ratings Uniform which was owned by J.M. Parsons.These trousers are one part of a naval ratings uniform which consists of four parts. The uniform is representative of the Royal Australian Navy uniform and can be traced to the Royal Navy (England). The complete uniform shows the connection between Australia and England since European settlement.Khaki long bell bottom trousers with seven quick release metallic buttons. Four of the buttons are lined up horizontally along the pelvis and another three fasten the trousers together in a liner pattern at the centre of the pelvis. There is a white square label sewn to the back/centre interior of the waistband with printed and written inscriptions. There is also a written inscription directly on the trouser fabric to the right of this label.Label on back of waistband interior has faded and inscription is no longer visible. Khaki coloured dress trousers with pressed seam running vertically down front and back of each leg. Two hip pockets, one on each side, with rear pocket on right side fastened by plastic button; additional pocket sits in waistline on right side. Trousers have seven loops for a belt and smaller loops for metal inserts which support a Sam Brown belt. Trousers fastened by a zipper in front and flap which secures with a plastic button on the interior. Spare button is sewn into the interior waistband. Leg hem is reinforced at front and back with strip of synthetic binding, presumably to aid against wear from rubbing on boots. The donor's husband's grandmother was Bertha Michaelis who lived at 'Linden', St Kilda. She married David Jacob Baruch (known as Dalbert) in Hamburg on 9 November 1881. Bertha was born in Melbourne. The couple lived in Germany. Bertha returned to Melbourne with their two children, Ernest and May, after Dalbert died in 1893. May married Rabbi Jacob Danglow in 1909 and they had one son, Frank, who was the donor's husband.Cream satin princess line wedding dress with dark cream lace trim. Fastens centre front with 17 satin covered buttons. Nine extant bones are placed on the interior seams and darts. Three-quarter length fitted sleeves. Bodice backed with cream cotton. The back trained panels of the skirt have been cut to extend into a pleated swathe of satin that wraps around the hips to the centre front. A square padded bustle pad is attached to the interior back of the skirt. The hem of the skirt is decorated with kilted and swathed satin and lace. Label, interior waist tape, woven silk stamped in dark green: H. L. HEYNEMANN / Hannover / Seilwinderstr. 6a., Bose; In monogrammed ("HLH") circles either side: (Left) BAARZAHLUNGS SYSTEM; (Right) ERSTE PREISE. This photograph depicts the interior of the dining room of the Manse with the 6 chairs and table decorated with flowers. Behind the table is the arched cast iron fireplace (lost) with mantelpiece with a clock and candelabras. On the left side we can see the corner of the oak console and on the right another cupboard and a framed painting. The photograph also shows the wooden floor covered with rugs. Unfortunately it has been carpeted in the late 20th century.This photograph is a rare view of the Manse and the private life of a chaplain.
