In c.1907 a Junior Technical School commenced to operate at the School of Mines and Industry. Murray Comrie Collection. George Minto (b.1824 in Harwick, Scotland) was engineer at the Flour Mill in Tarnagulla, was Mayor of Tarnagulla Borough Council for a time and was engineer of the Shire of Marong for twenty years. For 13 years he occupied the position of surveyor to the Bendigo City Council. In his later life he lived in Kangaroo Flat. Whilst living there, on the 28th November 1914, he died, aged 90 and a half years. This photograph is a reasonable image created from a historic news source (unknown). The eastern end of the school was opened in 1870 and led by John Hamilton (teacher), his wife Mabel (assistant) and Emma McColough (pupil teacher). Within a fortnight there were 130 children. "Showboat" was based on a novel by the same name and follows the lives of the crew and performers on the "Cotton Blossom", a Mississippi River showboat from 1887-1927. The music was written by Jerome Kern and the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was first produced by Ziegfield in 1927. Leslie John Ellison was born in Horsham in 1920. He was the son of Charles Ellifson (1892-1969) and Lilly May Rogers (1897-!966). He became a teacher and in the 1940s he dropped the "f" from his surname. In 1949 he married Aileen Beryl Ervin (6/3/1924-24/5/2004) John was interested in history and specially in Christian church history. He recorded his thoughts and research in writing. John died 25/7/1981 and is buried with his wife at the Kangaroo Flat Cemetery. Metal sign with embossed lettering, the corners have been folded over with mounting holes put through the thicker sections. The embossing reads: 'This Land is Auriferous and Subject to Mining Conditions.' The sign is very rusted and there is no trace of the original paintwork. A handwritten note with the sign reads: 'This sign was found covered by grass and eucalyptus leaves etc., at the side of the road leading past the Eucy. The company had a Pelton Wheel to drive the crushing battery, 'one of the first in the colony'. Extensive detail on the operation. John Delbridge mechanical engineer was the engineer under who 'the plant has been erected' Mrs McGowan broke a bottle of champagne over the wheel.
