Linton Football Club won the premiership in 1922. This is one of several copies of the photograph in the LDHS collection. Photograph, Carrie Murrell outside Murrell's Newsagency, Linton
Carrie Rogers Murrell, b.1905 at Daylesford, was a daughter of William Murrell and his wife Lily, née Clarke/Young. She was a grand-daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Carrie Murrell attended Linton State School, completing Grade 8 in 1n 1918. She then assisted her father in the Linton newsagency, before taking over as its manager, a role she enjoyed for some seventy years. In 1932 she moved the business from its site on the west side of Sussex Street to the east side, into a shop next to the Railway Hotel that had previously been run as a shoe shop by Dan Cornish. This shop remained as the Linton Newsagency until Carrie retired. It is now used as a private residence. Date of the photograph is not known. Criterion House was built by Samuel Steele in 1862/1863. Samuel Steele left Linton in the late 1860s, but it is not known if B. N. Dodd was the next owner of the building. B. N. Dodd was mentioned in advertising as a Linton draper in 1878. He sold the shop and moved to Ballarat in 1887. The upper floor of the building was used as a hospital from around the end of WWI to the early 1920s. The building was demolished around 1938/39, in connection with the rebuilding of new offices for the Shire of Grenville.Digital copy of original photograph, which shows a two-storey brick building with a verandah. There are four windows across the second storey. A sign across the front of the verandah reads "...TFITTER. B. N. DODD. DRAPER. MILLINERY". A man is leaning on a verandah post at the front of the shop near the entrance, and a woman is standing on the left of the picture, behind a box or counter. Several children are sitting on boxes or bales outside the shop. Ground floor windows have signs reading "DRAPER", "OUTFITTER", "MILLINERY". The cardboard has a patterned border printed on it, and an illustration of a chicken hatching from an egg. Photograph, Memorial to Samuel and Annie Lewers at St Paul's Church of England, Linton
Photograph taken in 1990 of a white marble memorial to Samuel and Annie Lewers. The memorial was erected by the congregation in 1897 at St Paul's Church of England, Linton. Samuel Lewers was the first manager of the Linton branch of the Bank of NSW, a Justice of the Peace, and first President of Shire of Grenville. The entire Lewers family was deeply involved in church life, Samuel Lewers having played a prominent role in raising money to build the church. Samuel Lewers died in 1895 and the memorial was dedicated on 15.03.1897. The St Patrick's Day sports meeting was an annual event in Linton during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1929 the events included running races for children, horse racing and motor car driving. R.
