He is buried in the Phaleron War Cemetery, Athens, Greece and is remembered on the Roll of Honour at Eltham.George was the first soldier from the Shire of Eltham to be killed in the Second World War. Located near the NSW border in the far east of Victoria, the Bendoc school served the needs of a rural population which opened the land to grazing at the turn of the century. It opened on September 8 1896. In December 1956 falling attendances forced the Education Department to close it. It is interesting to note that children here sought their secondary education in NSW. The first head teacher) was John M. Cass and the last R R King. In 1953-54 Lower Bendoc operated part-time with Goongerah. In 1955 it regained full-time status, but in 1956 worked part-time with Tubbut. The Australian Home Beautiful article on the Heidelberg and Eastern Golf Club indicates that its clubhouse comprised two buildings, "Bryn Teg" built by Mrs Thomas, one approximately 1849, the other 40 years later. The club moved into these buildings about 1928. The stables were converted for use in 1921 by Frederick Henry Gilsenan as the Lower Plenty State School No. 1295 which was open from 20/06/1921 to 11/04/1925. Mr. Gilsenan married Margaret Mar Cornall in 1923. They lived in Heidelberg, had a daughter, Verna in 1924. Mr Gilsenan was transferred to Mt Moriac SS No. 1608 in 1925. Transcription of plaque: Not Just a Pretty Place acknowledges the cultural significance of this site for residnets of the Nillumbik Shire and for the Wurundjeri community. Historically the confluence of rivers have particular importance as these were sites where rituals and ceremonies took place. The carved bluestone form presents an oversize river pebble that echoes the spirit of the water and draws attention to this location as a meeting place and landmark. The oval shape of a coolamun (Wurundjeri dish or basket) is referenced in the sculpture as a reminder of the indigenous heritage and as a gesture to reconciliation Danko describes the work as a contemporary message stick or sign, that can be read as a merker of time, nature and human existance. 2000 Nillumbik Art in Public Places Award. Sidney and Ivy-Jane Browne purchased the Lower Plenty ‘Golf Club’ Hotel in 1940. They owned it until 1943. Their daughter, Irene Stella, was born in Eltham in July 1923 and would have been between 17 and 20 years of age at the time this photograph was taken. Ivy-Jane (nee Williams) was born in Eltham in December 1899 and was the sister of George Alfred Williams who is commemorated on the WWI plaque at the back of St. Margaret’s church, Eltham, and whose name is also listed on the Cenotaph in front of the Eltham War Memorial in Main Road, Eltham. Irene Browne married Leslie Allan Walker in 1945 and following his death in 1958 she married Charles William Smith. She died in 2008 and is buried in Omeo Cemetery along with her husband, Charles Smith. Her granddaughter, Veronica Gunn, advises a few years earlier, Irene’s son took her to the hotel and spoke with the then owner who showed Irene the photo, which she confirmed was of herself.
