Medlow was built in 1889 for Col Cairncross and named 'Willcyrus' after his sons William and Cyril. The Cairncross family was responsible for the planting of many of the trees, some sourced from Canada by one of the Cairncross sons. The date is approximate. The Bull family lived at 'Medlow' at 42 Warrigal Road, Surrey Hills from 1911. Dr Richard Bull graduated MD, BS in 1904. He was a lecturer in bacteriology during WW1 and developed typhoid vaccines. He was President of the British Medical Association (BMA), forerunner to the AMA, in 1926. Dr Bull's wife Catherine (nee Perrier) was a lover and patron of music and the arts. Their daughter Norma was a well-known artist. Mrs Bull was a great lover of music and the arts and made 'Medlow' available for the advance of these causes. A booklet by Jack Risden of song parodies. He has rewritten the songs; "They didn't believe me", "They call it Dixie Land" and "Samoa" for a concert during the first World War. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. A photo of Santa and Melbourne Legacy President Bill Braidie with children and gifts in one the residences (either Stanhope, Harelands or Blamey House - Kew) in 1974. Photo came from a folder marked Residences. Melbourne Legacy ran residences to take care of children whose deceased father had been a serviceman and the mother was unable to care for them herself or the child needed to be in city for education reasons. The first was Holmbush which started in 1942. Then Stanhope in 1945, these were for older children for education or vocational opportunities. There was a need for a toddler/younger child home so Blamey House was established in Beaumaris in 1947 for 3 to 9 year olds. Harelands was acquired in 1950. Then the property in Beaumaris was sold and the name Blamey House was transferred to Holmbush, at 1267 Burke Road Kew from 1956 to 1978. For much of the time from late 1950s to 1970s Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The children were cared for until they were old enough to become independent. Local artist Graeme Drendel often depicts isolated individuals against stark Australian landscapes. Even when portrayed in group settings, Drendel’s figures exude solitude and introspection. Their expressions and attire hint at larger, obscured narratives, which the viewer is left to unravel or imagine. His paintings seamlessly blend the ordinary with the surreal, which creates a sense of uneasiness or forboding. Viewers grapple with the challenge of deciphering these compositions.

Polish-born designer David Waters first began producing swimwear in 1952. His mother Halina had recently opened a stall at Melbourne Queen Victoria Markets and was looking for swimsuits to sell; unable to find any she liked, she asked David to design something. He began making swimming costumes using his mother's sewing machine, in between his shifts working at a knitting factory. He had soon set up a small business in his parents' home, cutting patterns in one room while a machinist sewed them together in the next. His company, which he named Watersun, would become an iconic Australian swimwear label. During the early 1960s, Watersun developed its "Unquestionable Bra", an inbuilt moulded bra which was marketed as giving wearers a more natural bustline than other labels. The company was also known for its matching swimwear and beachwear, producing dresses, kaftans, tops and skirts in identical colours and prints to those used for many of its swimsuits. By 1967, the company was reportedly one of Australia's two biggest swimwear manufacturers, with over one hundred employees. Watersun was sold to Ada Productions in 1984 and was later acquired by Trackerjack Australasia. This swimsuit is believed to be one of a large quantity of samples, seconds and unsold Ada Productions stock donated to Brighton Historical Society in late 1990 by Brian Samuel, who worked at the company between 1979 and 1990.Gold lurex one-piece swimsuit (.1) with v-neck and built-in bra.
