The photograph shows the busy intersection of Flinders and Swanston St with Flinders St station, along with cable trams, motor vehicles, and pedestrians. The sign above the station entrance is advertising the "Australian War Museum" at the Exhibition Buildings. The reference dates its opening as ANZAC day 1922 and moving to Sydney in 1925. The photo was probably taken soon after it opened as the sign above the station entrance was regularly changed. Note the Safety Zone sign on the eastern side of the intersection for eastbound trams. The Union commenced as the Australian Tramway Employees Association in 1910. Changed its name in 1934 to the "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" so as to incorporate bus drivers of motor omnibuses. Became part of the Rail Transport Bus Union in 1993. See reference. Union members were issued with badges to indicate their membership. They were permitted to be worn on their uniforms. See item 7087 for a non-Victorian version and 915 for another example.Demonstrates a badge issued to members of the ATMOEABadge - made on a brass/gold backing with painted enamel on the front. On the central portion of the badge, had the ATMOEA logo, with the words "Vic" with red enamel backing, and on the outer edge of the badge "Aust Tramway & Motor Omnibus Employees Association" with a royal blue background. On back of badge has clip for fitting through an opening on a jacket button hole or coat lapel. On top of back of badge has number stamped in "3104" and bottom words "K. G. Souvenir of Melbourne cable tram closure in Oct. 1940 - made to fit a box of matches to minimize damage to the box while being carried in a pocket. Consists of a printed photo of cable trailer 571 in Nicholson St Fitzroy with the Royal Exhibition buildings in the background. Lists the opening dates of the various lines. The matchbox is by Bryant and May, made in Britain. On the rear of the box is an advert for the Orient Line of Royal Mail steamers in Europe and Australia. Not know who made the matchbox holder. Second matchbox made by Bryant & May of Richmond - has a 2nd world war message on the box label.
