It includes the painting by Lionel Backhurst presented to us on behalf of Eltham Society by Clifford Crate. The booklet on the Eltham town sign that Clifford also brought is in loose leaf format so we have been able to include the whole of that which really presents an excellent summary of the important historic buildings of Eltham. Also on display is another painting by Lionel which was presented to Russell and Marion Yeoman. Wood, St George's Studios operated frpm 238 Bourke St East, Melbourne from about 1891 through to 1897 at which point the premises was taken over by Yeoman & Co in 1898 CABINET 1866-1905 The Cabinet photo was introduced in 1866 in answer to a demand for a larger format photograph which could be mounted for a cabinet or on the wall. They were 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches (11.5 x 16.5 cm), more than twice the size of the cdv. They cost about twice as much as a cdv but eventually displaced them. They were not extensively produced until 1880 and had ceased by 1905. Jean Watson born 1906 was the only child of Christopher and Carrie Watson (nee Shillinglaw). She died at age 14 in 1920 as a result of an accident, cause as yet unknown. According to the Sands Melbourne and Victorian directories, Yeoman and Co operated from 287 Chapel Street, Prahran from c.1890-1923. The Heidelberg School Artists' Trail extends from Heidelberg through Eltham and Warrandyte and to the Dandenongs. It features signs depicting paintings of artists in the location in which they were painted. Transcription of sign: Jane Price is best known for her small moody impressionistic landscapes, many of which depict the rising moon and capture the softness of the evening twilight. In 1889, she shared a studio in Grosvenor Chambers, Collins Street east, Melbourne, with fellow Heidelberg School artists, Clara Southern and Jane Sutherland. She was also a close friend of Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. Around the time of the First World War, and for several years after, she rented a ‘log cabin’ in Diamond Creek, and this was situated close to ‘The Shack’, the studio and home, of May Vale. The Heidelberg School Artists Trail was established in about 1999 with about 52 signs across four local governemnt areas including Nillumbik and Banyule. It extends from Heidelberg through Eltham and Warrandyte and to the Dandenongs. It features signs depicting paintings of artists in the location in which they were painted. This one acknowledges "On the Eltham Road", 1906. Transcription of the text states: "In this cheerful rural landscape, Walter Withers has captured the spirit of early Eltham. Eltham was a quiet, sleepy village, where geese wandered up the main Road and the locals either walked or rode their horses or bicycles around the township. Walter Withers was known to load up his bicycle with his collapsible easel, folding stool, paint box, water bottle and canvases, and would head off for a day’s painting. Hilda Horne (b 06/05/1888 in Yendon) was the 10th child of Thomas William Watson and Emma Eliza Jane Phillips (who was one of the first white children born in the Barrabool Hills area (Geelong). Thomas worked on the Victorian Railways and was stationed at Yendon where they acquired a small farmlet named Graceland. Hilda married George Horne in. Corner of Diamond Street and Peter Street, Eltham. Walkers gather for the beginning of the walk led by local historian Russell Yeoman. The tree-covered hill that forms the western backdrop to the Eltham town centre exhibits many characteristics that are considered to contribute to the special character of Eltham. They include unmade streets, steeply sloping land, extensive tree cover and a large number of mud brick and pise (rammed earth) houses. A number of these were constructed in the 1940s and 50s by well-known builders John Harcourt and Alistair Knox. A significant proportion from this period were constructed by owner-builders. We walked around the upper part of the hill in the area of Kerrie Crescent and Peter Street. We visited several interesting houses (for external viewing only). The walk commenced at 2pm at the corner of Diamond Street and Peter Street (Melway ref 21H4) and was about 2 km. This free walk was open to the general public as well as Society members. Caroline Shillinglaw was born at Plenty, October 6, 1863. She died at the Shillinglaw family cottage 'Wattle Brae' in Eltham April 11, 1947. Caroline never married and was the youngest of Phillip Shillinglaw's siblings. Margaret Shillinglaw was William and Jean Shillinglaw's ninth child. She was born at Northcote March 3, 1856 and died at North Fitzroy September 7, 1933. She never married. Yeoman & Co operated at 47 Chapel St., Prahran from 1883 to 1889. The fashion depicted is typical of mid 1880s. View looking across Main Road to Wingrove Cottage (c.1950s), former home Charles Symons Wingrove. Charles Wingrove was a prominent figure in Victorian local government, as secretary to the Eltham District Road Board and Shire Council from 1858 to 1904, and, as Shire Engineer and Secretary to the Heidelberg Road Board. He was part of the Committee to establish the Church of England at Eltham. The Wingroves were an important pioneer family of Eltham and Wingrove Cottage is one of the most important heritage buildings in Eltham as one of the few surviving 19th century buildings. Reputedly built in 1858, Wingrove Cottage was recorded in the 1859-60 Eltham Road District rates book as a brick house owned and occupied by Wingrove with a Net Annual Value (NAV) of ₤30. In 1861, the year the Church opened, Wingrove's house was identified as a two -roomed brick cottage. Charles Wingrove is buried with other members of his family in the cemetery at St Katherine’s Church, St. Helena. This image is believed to have been incorporated in a presentation by Russell Yeoman to the 10 November 2004 Society meeting on "Significant Trees, Wildflowers and Local Gardens."This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The house also gives an informal name to the surrounding area at Cottles Bridge where artists, conservationists and like minded people have made their homes. This is an area of unconventional houses blending in with the surrounding bushland. The Pugh house is a rambling complex including studios and a large pottery kiln. It contains many of Clifton Pugh's works. For this excursion we have arranged a guided visit of the Pugh house and hope to be able to visit another house in the area. We will also be able to wander through bushland which Clifton had purchased for conservation purposes. This will be an afternoon excursion on Sunday 26th May starting with lunch (bring your own) at 12:30 pm at the Panton Hill Memorial Park. Transport will be by private car but transport can be arranged for those not wishing to drive. There is no cost but we need to be advised of members attending. Local historian Russell Yeoman with EDHS President Jim Connor Newsletter No., 234, June 2017 Heritage Excursion - Saturday 1st July - Eltham Lower Park - Walk and Talk Eltham Lower Park has played an important part in the history of our area since the early days of European settlement when it was used by local residents as an informal racecourse. Prior to that its location at the junction of the Diamond Creek and the Yarra River made it an important meeting place for the Wurundjeri people. The park combines formal elements and sporting facilities with remnant bushland that is of environmental significance. It is home to sporting and horse riding clubs, popular play spaces and the Diamond Valley Miniature Railway, which attracts large numbers of visitors. The park will be the venue for our July excursion which will comprise a walk of about 3.5 km around the park and adjacent areas. Along the way we will discuss the history and natural history of the area. The path along the creek and the river provides a pleasant and scenic walk. This walk on Saturday 1st July is about 3.5 km in length and will take 2 to 2.5 hours. It will start at 2pm at the Main Road car park at the front of the park. (Melway ref 21 H 10). Originally purchased in 1856 from Thomas Roberts, Yeoman of Little Eltham, for £10 for use by the Wesleyan Chapel, represented by indentured Trustees, Rev. Barnabas Shaw Walker, Minister of the Pentridge Circuit, Francis Thomas, Farmer of Keelbundora, William Harriman, Blacksmith of Nillumbik, Nicholas Rodda, Farmer of Nillumbik, Aaron Grimshaw, Farmer of Greensborough, Joseph Cooper, Gardener of Keelbundora, Peter Dredge, Scholmaster of Jika Jika and Samuel Jeffrey, Farmer of Jika Jika. Lot 20 of Subdivision of Portion 13, Section 4 of the Parish of Nillumbik in the County of Evelyn was located on the southern side of Henry street in Little Eltham North, where the current Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church is situated. It became the location of the Eltham Rechabite Hall. In 1893 a new hall was built and further enlarged in 1919. At the commencement of 1922, the property was purchased from the Independent Order of Rechabites with publicly subscribed funds and a new hall built at a cost of £750 and improved road access constructed to reduce the grade, running from Dudley Street to Henry Street. This hall was eventually replaced with the new Shire Offices and Hall built on the corner of Arthur Street and Main Road, which was opened in 1941. David Clarke (Head Teacher) and his sister, Catherine are standing in the centre of the group. Built with stone walls and wooden shingles on the roof. This was the first State School building which was built in 1856 and replaced with a new building in 1875 after the stone walls collapsed outwards.
