Collection of exercise books used by E J (Jack) Barker when he attended the University of Melbournel. He studied Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering - three year course - 1945, 1946, 1947. Prior to this he had attended Williamstown North State School then Williamstown High School. He changed to Footscray Technical School as he was less interested in the academic subjects and more interested in technical subjects. He chose Engineering as it gave access to Diploma Courses and tertiary studies. This enabled him to enter the University of Melbourne and do a Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering - 1945, 1946, and 1947. In 1948 he did a Diploma in Education at Melbourne University. From this path he was able to follow a career in teaching and his first appointment was at the School of Mines in Ballarat, (SMB) 1949. He became the first Vice Principal of SMB in 1960 and then Principal in 1964 to 1976. From 1976 to his retirement in 1987, he was the Foundation Director of Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE). Edwin Alderson was born in 1859 and served in several campaigns of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He saw service in the First Boer War in 1881 in the Transvaal. In 1896 he was sent to Mashonaland as a commander of a regiment of local troops during the Second Matabele War. In 1900 shortly after the outbreak of the Second Boer War he returned to South Africa to command the Mounted Infantry against the Boer forces. Alderson also served in the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War, Mounted Camel Regiment during the failed expedition to relieve Khartoum and rescue General Gordon. At the outbreak of the First World War, Alderson was in charge of the 1st Mounted Division. He retired from active service in 1920 aged 61. In 1901, as a result of Alderson's contribution to many campaigns he was rewarded with confirmation as a Brigadier General, appointment as a Companion of the Order of Bath and to receive the ceremonial post of Aide-de-Camp to Queen Victoria, who died the same year. He also received the Queen's South Africa Medal. He died in 1927 aged 68. James Bickford (1816-1895), Wesleyan clergyman, was born on 6 May 1816 in Modbury, Devon, England, fifth child of John Bickford, tenant farmer, and his wife Anne, née Whiteway. He received an elementary education and then worked for a commercial house at near-by Kingsbridge in 1830. Although raised in the Church of England, Bickford joined the Wesleyan society at Kingsbridge and was appointed a local preacher in 1835. He decided to become a missionary, and after a short informal training by the Wesleyan Missionary Society was ordained on 29 October 1838. Rev James Bickford became superintendent of the Yarra Street, Geelong, circuit in 1866. He was elected president of the Australasian Conference in 1868. Increased involvement in public affairs followed his appointment to Wesley Church, Melbourne, in 1870 and he was associated with the Society for Promoting Morality and the Sabbath Defence Association. Despite his previous advocacy of a 'mixed system' of education he supported the Victorian Education Act of 1872 as the only solution to sectarianism. These two letters discuss the secretarial requirements of Legacy in the 1930s. One is a letter to Legatee Os Gawler outlining the costs incurred by the Board of Management General Fund for the past 3 and half years that related to the secretarial fees of Miss Wheeler and stationery and phone expenses. It was written in response to a request by the President. The second letter shows there was a resolution a couple of weeks later that the Board moved to appoint a sub committee. The sub committee consisted of Legatees Gillespie, Russell, Cremor, Parkes, Birrell, Kemsley, Meldrum and Gawler. The sub-committee decided that the co-ordination of the club was best served by a paid male Assistant Secretary and Employment Officer who would be responsible for all the administrative and employment work, assisted by a typist. Also that when that was enacted the services of Miss Wheeler and Mrs Andrews were no longer required. These documents show that the club had recognised the need for paid assistance in their administration. The notation H9 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A notation on the back says: 'Appointment of first paid Secretary of Melbourne Legacy'.Very early documents that document the activities of the Legacy club and its expenditure. A programme of an art exhibition of 77 pieces of artwork by Lieutenant Daryl Lindsay in 1919. The Introduction was written by the war correspondent CEW Bean. Mr Lindsay's connection with Legacy is not known. A legatee Ray W___ donated this copy of the exhibition programme and the original of the cover print and a watercolour 'The road to Poperinghe' to Legacy in October 1984. At one stage they were in the Comradeship Room. As at December 2019 the original of the cover print is on loan to the Shrine of Remembrance and on display. The caption at the Shrine reads," 'Soldier'1918 by Daryl Lindsay (1889-1976). Daryl Lindsay was appointed an official war artist in 1917. He had worked as a batman for his brother-in-law Will Dyson, also an official war artist, from the end of 1916. Lindsay's sketches documented the facial injuries of soldiers, in order to assist then plastic surgeons undertaking facial reconstruction at Queen Mary's Hospital in Sidcup, Kent. His artistic skills led to his appointment as an official medical artist at the hospital in 1918." In 2005 Michele Matthews interviewed current and former residents of Bendigo for her thesis on the 1930s Depression as part of her PhD Research, with the University of Melbourne Faculty of Arts, History Department. Michele interviewed fifteen members of prominent Bendigonian families. The thesis was titled: "How Depressing?: The impact of the Great Depression on Bendigo and District 1925-1935". The Michele Matthews Collection contains fourteen audio cassette tape recordings and one written transcript. The tapes are each approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes duration. The questions presented to the interviewees explore everyday experiences they would have lived through at the time of the Depression. The questions covered sixteen relevant subjects: • Introduction and housing • Social activities, swimming, cinemas, school and games played with friends • Organizations such as the RSL, Relief Committees etc. and any effect they had on family life • The life of the single woman • Unemployment and Employment • Government Assistance • Charities Aid • Self-help • People Power, e.g. boycotts or protests • Politics • Trouble or crime • Family Health, Medical and Diet • Education • General memories of, and hardships encountered, during the DepressionAudio tape interview with sisters Doreen Domenica Favalora, and Josephine Monica Faveloro; cake and food shop owners. The sisters lived at 137 Forest Street (not the one in the photo) Generations of the Favaloro family have attended Catherine McAuley College and its predecessor colleges St Mary's and Marist Brothers'. A book has been released documenting the progressive family migration from Salina, Italy to Bendigo. The family went on to run many much-loved businesses in Bendigo including cafes, fruit shops, theatre kiosks and caterers. A book has been written called 'The Favaloro Family of Bendigo: The Early Year 1895-1942' by Robert McWilliam. Kenneth William Tweeddale BRIDGE DSC. Pre WW2 Kenneth worked in New Guinea from 1929 to 1941 as a Patrol Officer and then Assistant District Officer. He enlisted in the 2nd AIF No VX7794 on 10.3.1942 age 34 years 5 months. Initially posted too 3rd F.A Regt he was appointed A/Lieut on 26.5.1942 in “Z Special Unit”. Embarked for service in Aust mandated territory (NG) 31.8.1942, alloted to “M” Special Unit SWPA 7.5.1943, returned from special duties 11.9.1943, transferred to the retired list 8.10.1943. He was awarded by the U.S the “Legion of Merit” (Degree of Legionairre) for his work between Nov 1942 - July 1943 in the Sambare River and Salamaua area. He then joined the RANVR on 9.10.1943 in Intelligence and allotted to “Ferdinand Party” as a Sub Lieut. Embarcation dates are not listed but it appears he was in New Guinea in 1944 - 45. He was awarded the DSC for “Bravery and Enterprise in Recconnaisance Operations” on 16.2.1945. Appointment terminated in the RANVR on 8.1.1946. (SWPA) South West Pacific Area. 00354.1 Letter dated 8th April 1943 from Holmbush Committee to Captain Bert Frank and Mrs Frank confirming their appointment as Housemaster and Matron of Holmbush at a salary of £6 per week plus board and quarters. A copy of the Duties and rules of Conduct were enclosed but are not found here. 00354.2 Letter dated 10 April 1943 from Mr B Frank accepting the positions. Holmbush was the first hostel for children that Legacy started and operated from April 1943. It was later renamed Blamey House after another hostel called Blamey House was closed. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14.
