This sign is believed to have hung outside the Benalla Forest District Office. The sign features a pine tree (so probably made before the 1956 restructure). In 1956, the new Chairman of the Forests Commission, Alf Lawrence, introduced a major restructure of the organisation to create 56 Forest Districts. The process included amalgamating the plantations and hardwood divisions, which had been separate and rival entities up to that time. Things remained largely unchanged for the next three decades until the early 1980s. This chemise combination was basically a long chemise with panty legs attached, but in a briefer form than pieces of previous decades. It was made by Marjorie Burton's mother, Mrs Whiteman, and was for Marjorie's trousseau. Marjorie Burton ( nee Whiteman), born 12 June, in Birmingham, England came to Orbost in 1995. In England she did office work – typing, shorthand and secretarial work - in accountants’ offices and also trained as a comptometrist with Burroughs in London. She came from amiddle-class, working church-going family. Her mother was a milliner who mademany of Marjorie’s clothes, hats and outfits. Marjorie was married in 1938 to a salesman who later became a mechanic in the R.A.F. during WW11. This is a document showing the state of the accounts in 1944-5 of the Warrnambool Woollen Mill, a significant commercial business in Warrnambool for several decades that was well-known nationally, particularly during World War Two. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill operated in South Warrnambool off McDonald Street from 1910 to 2001 and produced mainly woollen blankets and flannels. Some of the old Woollen Mill buildings today are heritage-listed. The item shows that there was a reduced turnover in 1944-5 because of fewer Government contracts but the company was still making a profit. The Federal Government was a major buyer of Warrnambool Woollen Mill products with the factory supplying blankets for the Armed Forces in World War Two.This is an important document which forms part of a larger collection of Warrnambool Woollen Mill material in the archives of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill was a major industry in Warrnambool , employing at its peak several hundred people and it was a significant building in the city, with the social and economic ramifications connected to a major business in a regional centre. This photo, part 1 of a 2 photo sequence taken by John Witzig, is of of Bob McTavish riding a very large waves (15'+) at Bells Beach on Easter Sunday (April 18th) 1965. This wave is thought to be the same one described by McTavish in his book as one of the biggest, most powerful waves he had ridden, almost resulting in his drowning after being washed down past the next headland at winki pop. Bells, Easter, 1965 is considered one of the biggest days that this break has been surfed. The surfer in the photograph, Bob McTavish would go on to become one of the most influential surfer/shapers in Australian during the next decade.The extremely large waves experienced by surfers at Bells Beach on Easter Sunday 1965 is part of surfing folklore. These items were in the Ballarat School of Mines Museum, and when the museum was closed they were saved from the tip, and returned decades later. The Alafolo or afui are anthropomorphic clubs found across the island of Malaita. As war clubs, blows were struck with the edges of the club, which varied in length from under three to four feet. At least some of these clubs served a largely ceremonial function, particularly those rare examples with shell inlay. Malaitans war clubs are usually made of tooa, a reddish hardwood. Arthur Henry Miers, pictured back row left in the photograph played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). THE WATER TOWER is a major landmark of High Street, Wodonga. It began operation from 1924 until it ceased operation in 1959. It stood unused for a decade until the lower section was modified and put to use as “ The Tower’s Cobbler’s Inn” in 1962. In 1972 Wodonga City Council proposed to demolish the Tower. Their suggestion received an unfavorable response from the city’s citizens, so the Tower still stands today. When Andrew Black took occupancy of the shop ate 589 Swanston Street, Carlton, he was unaware that a few years earlier it had been the scene of a murder and became known as the 'pyjama case murder'. On 1st September 1934, the body of an unidentified woman dressed only in pyjamas was found near Albury, NSW. For the following decade it remained an unsolved mystery until 1944 when Tony Agostini was arrested and confessed to killing his wife. At the time of the murder, the Agostinis were living in the building, where Andrew later ran his shoe repair business. Laurie began his career as a shipwright in the mid-1900s, following in the wake of the skilled carpenters who have over many centuries used their craft to build and maintain marine vessels and their fittings. You can see Laurie’s inscription on the tool called a ‘bevel’. Laurie worked for Ports and Harbours, Melbourne, for over 50 years, beginning in the early 1960s. He and a fellow shipwright inscribed their names on a wheelhouse they built in 1965; the inscription was discovered many decades later during a repair of the plumbing. Many decades later Laurie worked on the Yarra moving barges up and down the river and was fondly given the title ‘Riverboat Man’ His interest in maritime history led him to volunteer with the Maritime Trust of Australia’s project to restore and preserve the historic WWII 1942 Corvette, the minesweeper HMAS Castlemaine, which is a sister ship to the HMAS Warrnambool J202. Laurie Dilks donated two handmade displays of some of his tools in the late 1970s to early-1980s. The varnished timber boards displayed the tools below together with brass plaques. During the upgrade of the Great Circle Gallery Laurie’s tools were transferred to the new display you see there today. In 1910, Portland Knitting Company began in downtown Portland, Oregon, with a few hand-knitting machines above a tiny retail store. Little did founders Carl Jantzen, Roy and John Zehntbauer know that they would achieve both fame and controversy as swimwear pioneers. Producing a wool suit for a rowing team they began offering "bathing suits" in their catalog. Knit on sweater cuff machines, the suits became popular with swimmers. The demand increased for those "Jantzens" and the company name was changed in 1918 to Jantzen Knitting Mills. The suits were made of 100% pure virgin wool. Matching stockings and stocking cap completed the costume of the day. Early advertisements guaranteed the famous rib-stitch "gives that wonderful fit". c1930 Jantzen catalogs featured upcoming movie stars, including Loretta Young, Joan Blondell, Ginger Rogers, and Dick Powell.
