Document, Borough of Kew / Gazetted Streets, 1865-1937
The Melbourne suburb of Kew gained independence from the Boroondara Roads Board in 1860, being declared a Municipality in that year. Kew became a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1910, and a City in 1921. The former City of Kew became part of a newly declared City of Boroondara in 1994. This very fragile document records the following information about streets in Kew - Name, Total Width, Width of Carriageway, Description, Government Gazetted - Year & Page. While the name of a street was formally acknowledged and published in the Victorian Government Gazettes, this document, compiled by a public officer, probably in the Town Clerk's Department, is the earliest known local record listing street names in the Borough, later Town, then City of Kew. The front page indicates that in 1865, the responsibility for an initial 36 streets in Kew was taken over by Council. The final annotation in the document was made in 1937. The document is an important record for researchers seeking to understand the dating of streets in the district.27-page document compiled by officers of the Borough, Town and City of Kew, listing the names of streets taken over by Council, and providing details of their proportions and gazettiing. The document covers the period of 1865 to 1937. Handwritten documentborough of kew, streets -- kew (vic.) -

Kiewa Valley Historical Society
Binder Victorian Education 1947, Circa 1947
These educational publications covering a topical monthly theme and providing a slice "of the era" in general knowledge, was used by schools in Victoria as a basic starting point for a particular level of perceived knowledge. The general articles and extracts contained within, were not targeting a specific gender or socio economic sector but designed for all children at a particular stage of their development. This publication did have a format of: 1st page topical, e.g. ANZAC day scouting (U.N.), one page of regional Victoria, one page of poetry, one page of short stories, one page of world history and the last page of a song, complete with appropriate notes. These publications were produced during the second World War and made special references to it. This publication occurred during a period when the Education Department was highly authoritarian in its approach to State levels of learning. Fragmenting "special" schools like later "New Age" teaching methods and doctrines (home schooling) were repressed with considerable force. This binder full of monthly educational studies was particularly important to "hidden away" rural communities such as in the Kiewa Valley, especially at this point in time (World War II). The teaching methods used by local schools provided the necessary break through required by local school children to stop any adverse knowledge deficiencies due to factors of regional isolation. School children with in the Kiewa Valley would be able to integrate with children from all regions, weather in cities or larger towns. This hard cover (card) binder contains 11 monthly publications produced by the Victorian Department of Education for Grades 7 and 8 in the year 1947. Each issue has 16 pages with the cover page covering the major theme for the month. Each issue is placed within the folder by the folded middle page constrained by a thin cord. This is the only method to contain each monthly edition as they have no clasp or are stapled. The folder"SCHOOL PAPER COVER" underneath and to the left is a sketch of the world (revolving desk top stand) on top of a book and next to this "Name ------------ " underneath "Grade-----------" underneath "School---------" all enclosed by a thin border line.school paper, victorian education curriculum, education news letters, loose leaf educational binders -

Functional object - Notebook, 1940s
As this notebook has the name 'Gat Sing' on the last page it is presumed that it belonged to Charles Gat Sing. He had a market garden on Mortlake Rd, Warrnambool in the first half of the 20th century. He initially lived in a hessian-lined hut but later built a weatherboard house. He married Nellie Leeong Sen in 1928 and they had two children, Ruth and Nancy. The family were well-known and respected in the Warrnambool community. Gat Sing died in 1944 and his wife died in 1989. Two of the receipts in the notebook are made out to Ruth Gat Sing and it is possible the notebook belonged to her, following the death of her father. This notebook is of considerable interest as a memento of the Chinese market gardener community in Warrnambool and of Gat Sing and his familyThis is a notebook with blank pages held in a brown leather folder by a brown cord. There is a brown ribbon on the outside of the folder for enclosing the notebook therein. The front cover has an insert folder for storing papers and the back cover has insert folders for cards, tickets and stamps. The notebook has a mottled cover, mostly in the green shades. Melbourne Legacy
Document, Education Department Christmas Toy Appeal, 1967
A history of Legacy Christmas Toy Appeal. It began in 1949 with Legatee Norman Heathcote who was District Inspector of the Education Department's Metropolitan No 1 area (Port Melbourne to Sandringham). The schools produced toys which were donated to Legacy to distribute. Initially 800 toys were handed to Legacy. In 1950 it increased to 3,000 toys which were shared with Carry On. The document was written in 1967 when approximately 7,000 toys were expected and the total distributed was almost 110,000. Legacy had a Christmas Toy Appeal Committee as part of it's structure. The document includes an agenda for a handover ceremony on 16 November 1967. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. Most documents are being catalogued separately.A record of the beginnings of the Legacy Toy Appeal.White foolscap paper x 2 pages with black type about the Christmas Toy Appeal in 1967 and its history.toys, education, toy appeal
