Sunshine High School had the system of Prefects being elected by the students from candidates nominated by the teachers. It is unknown whether the exact number of votes each elected Prefect received was ever released to the students. Prefects were used to supervise the behaviour of other students, and to book them for offences such as not wearing caps on the way to and from school. In the Pledge book there are empty pages after 1971 so it is unknown whether the signing of the Prefects Pledge was abandoned after then. Sunshine High School existed in its own right in the Melbourne suburb of Sunshine for a relatively short period between 1955 to 1991. The school amalgamated with the following five secondary schools: Sunshine Technical School, Tottenham Technical School, North Sunshine Technical School, Sunshine West High School, and Ardeer High School to form the multi campus Sunshine College in 1992. The buildings of the former Sunshine High School on Ballarat Road now form part of the Sunshine Campus of Victoria University. The book is a historical record of the names and signatures of the Prefects that signed the Prefects Pledge, and served the Sunshine High School over the 14 years between 1958 to 1971 inclusive. Within eleven years of his arrival in Melbourne in 1852, he had established an important colonial shipping company, Anderson & Marshall, and married Mary Austin, the eldest daughter of Thomas Austin Esq of Clifton Villa in Cotham Road. Elected to the Kew Borough Council in 1869, he remained an active member until 1875. During this period, he was elected Mayor of Kew in 1872. A Scottish Protestant by birth and conviction, John Marshall was, with David Beath, a member of the inaugural committee that began planning for a separate Presbyterian Church in Kew, lending the Committee the funds to purchase land on the corner of Cotham Road and Highbury Grove. John Marshall lived at his home, 'Maryfield', at what was then 239 [now 197] Cotham Road until shortly before his death at the age of 70 in January 1903. Benjamin Jackson Bartley was elected to the Indigo Road Board in 1871 and became the Chairman. Three years later when the Indigo Road Board became Chiltern Shire Mr Bartley became the first Shire President. This position he held for eight consecutive years and again in 1883-1884 and 1895. Agnes Bell (1824-1924) from a pioneer Kangaroo Ground family, married Scotsman Ewen Hugh Cameron (1831-1915). In 1863 he took up the 100 acre farm “Pigeon Bank” at Kangaroo Ground where the family lived. In 1874 Cameron was elected as the Member for Evelyn in the Victorian Legislative Assembly and held the seat until he retired in 1914 as “Father of the House”. Agnes and Ewen had eight sons and three daughters. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). Program for a rally arranged by the City of St Kilda on 26 June 1940 at St Kilda Town Hall to recruit numbers and raise war savings. Includes a detachable application form for War Savings Certificates on the back page. One of the speakers at the rally was Gunner Harold Holt MHR, who later served as Prime Minister in 1966-67. Holt was elected to Parliament in 1935 at the age of 27. He enlisted in the Militia in February 1939, joining a part-time artillery unit for businessmen and professionals and, May 1940, without resigning his seat, he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force with the intent of becoming a full-time soldier. He was posted to the 2/4th Field Regiment, holding the rank of gunner. Within three months his brief military career came to an end when three senior government ministers died in a plane crash, an election was called, and he was given leave from the Army to campaign. Friendly Societies originated in the industrial areas of the United Kingdom. The first society in Victoria was formed in 1839 and by 1913 more than half of the Victorian population was insured by Friendly Societies in some fashion. The societies were financed by Members' subscriptions and offered health benefits and other welfare services, before these services were provided by the government. Doctors were paid by the societies to treat members free of charge, and Dispensaries were established to provide members with subsidised quality medicines. The Sunshine and District Friendly Societies Dispensary was established on the 1st of March 1930 with a membership of 896, and it was located in Sun Crescent Sunshine. The membership grew to 1052 within 4.5 years, and the number of prescriptions dispensed in the 6 months prior to November 30,1935 totalled 10,535. The Dispenser was Mr. C. H. Semmens. Most Friendly Societies operated democratically with office bearers changed regularly to prevent power cliques. The Sunshine Dispensary appears to have operated in the same way as the societies that owned it. The Advocate of 10 July 1936 reports that the seven newly elected office bearers or delagates were from the Friendly Societies; A.N.A., M.U.I.O.O.F., P.A.F.S., and G.U.O.O.F. The names of all the seven people can be found on the Honour Board, indicating that they each have served at least one term as President of the Sunshine Dispensary. The health professions and the Labour Governments of the 1940's wanted to see the involvement of Friendly Societies in health care broken. The Commonwealth Free Medicine Plan appears to have been drawing customers away from Friendly Societies Dispensaries in general. The Sunshine Dispensary placed several advertisements in the Sunshine Advocate during late 1950 urging members to remain loyal to it. By the 1980's the increase in entrepreneurial clinics and the availability of take away medicine helped to vastly diminish the involvement of Friendly Societies in health care provision. The 1936 Sunshine Advocate refers to the Sunshine and District United Friendly Societies Dispensary, with the same office bearers as the Presidents on the Honour Board but on which the 'United' is missing from the name of the Dispensary. The 1950 advertisements were placed by Sunshine U.F.S. Dispensary of 23 Sun Crescent. It is thought that all three names refer to the same business, but the writer stands to be corrected. The above is a compilation of information sourced from Sunshine Advocates published in January and July 1936, and in September, October and November 1950. It also draws on an article written by Elizabeth Willis and published online by the the Department of History (University of Melbourne), and on an article written by Mr. Bill Kelly of the Australian Friendly Societies Pharmacies Association, and also on an article by Museum Victoria Australia. Corrections to what has been written are welcome from interested readers.The Honour Board provides a historical record of the Presidents that served 61 terms on the Board of the Sunshine and District Friendly Societies Dispensary. It also provides a reminder that when a government does not adequately look after the welfare needs of its citizens, the people can band together to find ways of helping each other. The Sunshine Dispensary no longer exists, and a more recently established Community Pharmacy which operated in Hampshire Road could not compete against the discount pharmacies that have taken over. These new pharmacies sell a wide range of profitable product lines, as well as dispensing traditional prescription medications.Brown stained wood particle board with picture frame type edging. The board has six straight sides however it is not typical hexagon shaped. The top is composed of three straight short edges to give an almost rounded edge to an otherwise oblong shaped bottom section. On the board in gold coloured lettering are the names of 'brothers' and 'sisters' who served a total of 61 terms as PRESIDENTS of the SUNSHINE AND DISTRICT FRIENDLY SOCIETIES DISPENSARY, which was established on the 1st of March 1930. Eight of the men served more than one term with BRO. I. MILLER serving four terms, and BRO. F. RICHER serving three. The three women SISTER. I. REWELL, SISTER. C. JOHNSON, and SISTER. M.S. ARMSTRONG served one term each. There is no indication of when each person served, but it is believed that the term length was around six months and that the list is in chronological order. This conclusion results from seeing that BRO. W. Copy of a piece about Richard Hartley Smith Abbott. Abbott was born in Bendigo. He was a hardware merchant, it operated as Abbot Supply Co. He was a director of the Bendigo gas Co, Sandhurst Building Society and Sandhurst Trustees Co. He also helped pioneer tanning in Australia and he had his tannery in Mandurang. He served on the Strathfieldsaye Council and later the Bendigo City Council. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1907 and in 1932 served as a Senator. In 1887 he was on the committee to establish an art gallery. He served on the School of Mines Council. In 1910, he attended a meeting about Miners' Phthisis in Bendigo. He invested in the Bendigo mines and his firm was a major supplier of various hardware for the mining companies. An historical visual record of some of the members of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild, circa 1950. Many events run by the LHLG founded in 1906, were initially held in venues across Melbourne. In later years the main hall of the building opened in 1917 became a main venue for entertainment, meals and dancing. The LHLG organisation eventually amalgamated with the Flying Angels at the Mission circa 1962 and many LHLG members such as Dora Simpson, later elected as FA President went on to officiate.The Ladies Harbour Lights Guild (LHLG) a Melbourne and statewide network initially raised funds and held events for the Mission to Seafarers. Originally founded in 1906 the LHLG were responsible in 1917 for raising the funding for the Chapel and Dome at the Mission. Kenneth Joynson Flecknoe joined the Ballarat School of Mines Council on 16 April 1975, and was elected Vice-President on 15 July 1979, and became its eleventh president in 1981. His time on Council was one of rapid chance for the School, from separation of the tertiary division and the Junior Technical School to the development of TAFE. An Article in The Herald (18 Feb 1931) records that: "FAIRVIEW OFFICIALS - AT the annual meeting of the Associates of the Fairview Golf Club the following office bearers were elected: President, Miss A, Simcocks; secretary, Miss B. Williamson; captain, Miss A. Shiells; committee, Misses Tresise, Walters, Brown and McLachlan. The captain reported that the shield presented by Mr and Mrs Bourne for competition among the clubs associated with the metropolitan mental hospitals had been won by Fairview associates, who will hold it for one year."The trophy has historical significance as an item associated with the Melbourne Mental Hospital in the 1930s and also of social significance in that it relates to recreational pursuits undertaken by staff of the Hospital.Wood and silver plate shield won by the ladies team of Fairview Golf Club in the years 1930, 1931 and 1932. The man photograph in a garden is Joseph David Starkie, who was a Bulla Shire councillor for more than twenty years and during that time he was elected Shire President four times. He was also a member of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust and served as the chairman from 1905 - 1908. While serving on the water board he was instrumental in Sunbury gaining a permanent water supply. A drinking fountain has been erected on a reserve at the Village Green to honour the arrival of the permanent water supply to the town. The installation of a permanent water supply benefitted the town and contributed to a more reliable rail service as steam trains refilled their tanks with water at Sunbury Station. Major General C H Brand was born in Ipswich Qld on the 4 September 1873. he fought in both the South African war and WW1. He commanded the 3rd Battalion at Gallipoli and the 6th Brigade in 1915-16 and the 4th Brigade in 1916-18 in France. he retired after 37 years of Service and was elected a senator for the United Party in 1935, stepping down in 1947. Dugal MacDougall was born in Scotland and came to Victoria in 1852. He was initially a farmer at Kyneton and in 1855 he purchased a produce store in Golden Square but in 1859 he turned to mining. In 1861 he married Mary Ann Brocklebank (1843-1891). In 1867 he was elected to the Sutton Ward of the Sandhurst Council but resigned from this position to become the Bendigo Town Clerk, a position he held until his death in 1879. The Bendigo Easter Fair was established in 1871 to fundraise for the hospital and the Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. Annie Mary (Mollie) Sibson was a nursing sister at the Bendigo Hospital in the late 1920's and early 1930's until her marriage to Dr Eugene Sandner in 1933, although Mollie did continue to hold an unpaid position on the Board of Management of the hospital for many years afterwards. Robert Clark was a self educated man who had arrived in Australia with his step father to take up mining in 1854. He worked in several local mines and being familiar with the hardships associated with mining life helped to establish the eight hour day for miners. Robert married Sarah Jane Kernaghan in 1862 and together they had nine children. Robert Clark was first elected in 1872 and remained a councillor until his death in 1883. Brother and sister, Panogiannis (Peter) Raftopoulos ( Bourlotos) and Kalypso Sofianos are photographed with Kalypso's children, Konstandina (Nina) and Spiros (Pip). Panogiannis was actively involved with the IPS. He was elected Secretary only about a year after he came to Melbourne. He proposed the introduction of the IPS Tertiary Bursaries which were introduced in 1988 and are now known as the Year 12 Awards.
