Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans die on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents an early type of over-snow transport introduced to Falls Creek by Bob Hymans.An article from an unknown publication showing a Snow-Sedan which was manufactured by Fudge's Industries at Moosomin, Saskatchewan, Canada. Bob Hymans had purchased three of these vehicles to transport goods as well as customers to his Grand Coeur Chalet. The old Loco shed was built in 1864, as part of Echuca's rail extension, to service both passengers and goods but mainly wool, from the Riverina to Melbourne.The coming of the railway had a significant impact on Echuca and the transportation of produce, people and goods between Melbourne and the Riverina. The extension of the rail line from Bendigo began in 1862 and the final rail was laid in 1864. The Echuca line went into service immediately. The trains average speed was 20-25miles/hour double the pace of the Cobb & Co coaches. Bushells tea and coffee producers started in Brisbane(1883) and expanded to Sydney, Melbourne(1899), Fremantle and finally to Auckland(1937). Like other Pacific Island sourced condiments Tea and coffee were a lot easier to import than British or European goods. Local Australian industries were starting to develop and grow to overcome the long transportation times and the high costs of goods from traditional suppliers. Bushells Pty Ltd is a prime example.This "Bushells" Coffee tin is a good example of Australian "grown" condiment suppliers serving the "whole" of the Australian marketplace. Rural areas were not neglected and the purchase price for goods were a reasonable levels. Kiewa Valley experienced a population growth from the late 1940's and due to the migrant works in the Kiewa Hydro Scheme the greater use of coffee was initiated. Rural areas, on the whole, where the population was more connected to some degree with a British heritage lineage were predominately tea drinkers. The American film productions, however, screened in Australia post 1950's showing a greater degree of coffee drinking "stars" had a long term effect upon the drinking habits of the rural populous. This round tin of coffee with lid is made from pressed steel lid framed top and bottom. Sturdy cylindrical body is made of cardboard. Paper information label is pasted onto the container with promotional and logo information.In large print and on opposite sides are two manufacturers labels.The topprint and on a diagonal slant in gold letters on a dark blue background is "BUSHELLS" underneath this "PURE" and below this on a red background "COFFEE". On one side in smaller print "EASY TO MAKE" and below this "Use one dessert-spoonful for each cup of coffee desired. Place in the pot and pour over it fresh water briskly boiling. Let stand for five minutes, then strain". Below this "1 IB. net" and underneath is a signature "BUSHELLS" below this in small print "Pty. Ltd." The pocket balance was first created in 1770 by Richard Salter in the UK. From the late 18th century onwards these small scales were widely used in markets, grocers and farm shops – wherever people needed to be able to verify the weight of goods to be purchased in order to calculate the correct pricing. Because it was portable, and simple to use, the pocket balance was ideal for weighing goods where accuracy was not required. This balance appears to have been used for weighing fish.Pocket spring scales made of steel. There is a spring fixed at one end with a hook to which an object can be attached at the other. At the top of the scales there. is a metallic ring to fasten the object. This is attached to the main body which on one side has measurements inscribed into the metal surface. Initially listed as T J Connelly's Tin shop, this premises on the corner of High and Forest Street, expanded to include all items of ironmongery. By 1878 they were advertising gas stoves for sale and installation.The item is account ledger of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. There is an alphabetical index at the front of the book, listing the customer name and order number/s. On the left-hand side of each handwritten ledger page the customer name, goods supplied and price of goods is recorded. On the right-hand side of each handwritten page is the date of payment and amounts paid. Each ledger page has the page number in the top corner. There are 358 pages ledger pages plus the alphabetical index pages. The cover is thick hard green cardboard, with the spine and corners finished in brown leather. The pages are bound together with string. The book includes the date range of May 1926 to January 1929. All pages have been used. This is a notebook used to keep some of the farm accounts of the Bonnett farm in Mepunga. As the handwriting is the same throughout, most of the entries appear to have been made by George Bonnett, the son of Frederick and Charity Bonnett. The accounts date from 1920 to 1981 and commence with the sale of stock (pigs, sheep and cattle) in 1920 and go on to record purchases as well as sales in a variety of goods and services - cartage costs, electricity bills, garage repairs, stock feed, household goods etc. This notebook is an interesting memento of Westen District farm finances over a period of sixty years in the 20th centuryThis is a small note book with a black cover. The land occupied by the Hamilton Street shops was subdivided in the 1880s and the first purpose-built shop was 'Pope and Moran, Grocers'. This shop later became Tom Morris' Grocery. By 1930 shops stretched along both sides of Hamilton Street and part way along Churchill Street. The donor the late Norman Carter took many photos documenting Mont Albert and Surrey Hills from the 1920s. His subject matter often related to Church of England events and activities.Black and white photo taken from the centre of the road in Hamilton Street, Mont Albert.
