McLardy was born on Phillip Island in 1909. He was never beaten for the Australian National 110 metres hurdles. An official error prevented him from representing Australia at the Los Angeles Olympics. He won the Victorian championships five years in succession. He was trained by K. G. The winner, Cec Weatherby received 20 pounds prize money and a sash. The race was run concurrectly with the Lightweight race, which was common back then. Peter Shannon's brother has the actual bike that came 3rd in that 1935 Lightweight race.Photograph of C. Island & Westernport Historical Society by the Shire of Phillip ...One of a collection of over 400 photographs in an album commenced in 1960 and presented to the Phillip Island & Westernport Historical Society by the Shire of Phillip Island. A tragedy occurred at the McHaffie home in 1868. When a friend of John McHaffie, Captain Grossard, was accidentally shot when a fellow guest on the verandah of the homestead mishandled a gun during preparations for a hunt. Captain Grossard's dying wish was that he should be buried on a cliff near the sea. His lonely grave is still to be seen at the end of Grossard Point Road. This inscription appears on the headstone: "Sacred to the memory of William Phillip Grossard, formerly of Bideford, Devonshire, many years captain in the Merchant Service, who was killed by accidental discharge of a gun during a visit to Phillip Island, the 17th December, 1868. The theatre, set up in the old shire hall, was run by Bill Schooling and Connie Maugham. A World War 1 veteran, Charlie Croft, was the doorman. The films came down by ferry for Saturday nights, or Bill Schooling collected them in his car, which ran on kerosene. In the summertime, there were also screenings on Wednesdays and Fridays. Screenings started with a newsreel; then a travelogue was shown; another support film would be fitted in before interval, then another newsreel, a cartoon, and finally the feature film hit the screen. The origin of debutante balls was that the woman was old enough to be married, and part of the purpose of her coming out was to display her to eligible bachelors and their families with a view to marriage within a select circle. ... was ultimately implemented as the Phillip Island Nature Park. Shire ...Notices showing the boundary of the area of the review and advising that an investigation was to be carried out were published in the Victoria Government Gazette and in local and other Victorian newspapers in May 1987. A descriptive resources report was published in August 1991. Council received 1,425 submissions and letters following publication of the descriptive report. The Council considered these submissions and published proposed recommendations in April 1993. A further 1,993 submissions were received in response to the proposed recommendations. The Council published its final recommendations in July 1994. A change to legislation in 1989 enabled the LCC to make recommendations for public land within a ‘town’, though cities and rural cities remained excluded from the definition of public land. Timber resources and water quality and yield from timbered catchment areas remained significant issues in Melbourne’s catchments. Recommendations for the Yarra Ranges National Park were based around the closed Melbourne water catchments and adjoining state forest. A recommended Phillip Island State Park based around the penguin reserve was ultimately implemented as the Phillip Island Nature Park.Shire of Nillumbik DPE/Enviro -

Joseph Benjamin North was a well-known professional musician in Melbourne in late 1800 to mid 1900s, teaching music and playing in what became the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. He married Lucinda Matilda and their children were Tralford E and Camille D. With friend Leon Lambert, North purchased 60 acres of land around Karingal Drive and Sherbourne Road and built two houses; they paid for a wooden bridge for access. North eventually sold his house to a family named Green but later the land was sold to the Shire of Eltham, and it is now known as Meruka Park, and the house, Meruka House; Alan Gardner named the park. After Lambert's death, his property was bought by Fred Warne. Edley North was born in 1835, and died 26 March 1923; he married Caroline North, born 1835, died 23 July 1922. Edley's family migrated from England in 1859, settling in Adelaide. He was granted an allotment of 221 acres on Phillip Island 1868-1870. on 7 April 1874 he travelled to Pine Lodge and later moved his wife and five children. He and Caroline later moved to a small farm, Willow Grove in Eltham, purchased between 1905 and 1910 (first mentioned in the rate book in 1908 as being a house and 10 acres on Susan Street, and would also have had frontage on Brougham Street); Their daughter Violet Alice inherited it; she married Walter J Dobson around 1921; he died on 25 March 1948 aged 77 and Violet on 4 January 1947. Willow Grove was later purchased by A George and P Audrey Hester April/May 1947. Edley, Caroline and Violet are all buried in Eltham Cemetery. Marjorie Mary North was born in 1909 ; the family travelled in a horse-drawn waggon from Fitzroy to spend weekends in their little holiday house in Sherbourne Road on 10 acres of land. In 1933, she married Tralford Norman whose parents owned 62 acres of land including Meruka Park. Marjorie and Tralford lived in Looker Road, Montmorency; she died 7 February 2003.
