In 1988, as part of a Defence of Mainland Australian policy, defence of facilities of strategic importance in northern Australia were allocated to Army Reserve units. ‘A’ Squadron was allocated the defence of Tindal Air Force base located 15 KM outside Katherine in Northern Territory. After a quiet period, interest in bookplates in Australia began to increase in the early 1970s, Entrepreneurial art and book collectors such as Edwin Jewell and others commissioned multiple Bookplate designs from a range of well known fine artists. This is a set of 12 photographs of contractors removing a vehicle from the lake at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo in September 1986. The Ford XB panel van belonging to WO2 Ted Burgess rolled down the embankment during the night from the SGTs Mess carpark. Despite written off by the insurance company, the panel van was remarkably restored by Ted to roadworthy condition and driven in to Fortuna with a shark’s fin mounted on its roof. On the 1st March, 1959, the first special train was organized by the Australian Railways Historical Society in conjunction with the Kanyana Festival Committee of Colac, Victoria. It proved so popular that additional trains were later organized. Temporarily in storage at Newport railway yards eight NBH excursion carriages were transferred to Colac which ran on the special trains until early-1962. A A.R.H.S. Anne Frank was one of a group of eight Jews in hiding from the Nazis. After their betrayal and transportation only her father Otto Frank survived. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries.
