City of Moorabbin Historical Society (Operating the Box Cottage Museum)
Newsletter - City of Moorabbin Historical Society April 2013 doc, April 2013
The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin area residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts that are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum. Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest Helen retired in 2012 and Dr Bill Richardson, Secretary CMHS produced this NewsletterDr Bill Richardson, Secretary, has taken on the role of producing the bimonthly Newsletter for CMHS following the resignation of Helen Stanley. The Victorian Government Legislation has a new set of Model Rules that we have been invited to adopt and modify if we feel necessary. Our conclusion is that the new Model Rules are generally comprehensive and adequate, and are simple to understand. We recommend that the new model rules be adopted with some possible additions.A4 paper x 2 pages printed on one side. This is the first of the bi-monthly, City of Moorabbin Historical Society Newsletter produced by Society member and Secretary, Dr. Bill Richardson in April 2013. YouTube video of the Cottage is up and running. Type Box Cottage in search engine. City of Glen Eira properties staff inspected Cottage, found all ok and organised some photographs for the Glen Eira residents’ handbook. Dennis has installed the new display cabinets that he built for the barn for the tools that were displayed in the dairy. This was funded by CGE Community Grant . We will need to decide on the Model Rules and our purposes as required by the new Victorian Government legislation. The next general meeting is on 28th April at 1:00pm .Membership fees for 2013 are due and payable. Volunteers will be needed on Friday 26th April City of Moorabbin Historical Society Inc. / Reg. Animal specimen - American Crow, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The American Crow is common throughout North America. They reside in areas with open view and trees but can often frequent city parks, suburbs of large cities and along the seashore. The Crow is a robber and therefore, find living in locations which they can raid for food perfect. These birds are sociable animals and are often found in small groups made up of family members. All their lives they reside in the one location; however, they do migrate south during the autumn. They usually find their food by walking along the ground and eat both plant and animal foods. This includes worms, larvae, insects and fruits and nuts. Crows are also known to feed on small rabbits, frogs and mice. They are also identified as nest predators because they feed on eggs. In areas occupied by humans, the Crow will find their food source from trash and also road kill. The American Crow is not considered to be an endangered species and list them on the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. However, large amounts of crows are killed for sporting and during campaigns (having a desire to reduce the population of the Crow in America). This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This American Crow has black plumage which has slightly faded in colour. This colour fading could also indicate that the bird was molting because the feathers of the American Crow appear brownish when the are about to molt and these feathers give way to new glossy black feathers. The specimen has two black glass eyes, a dark bill and dark legs with talons. Both the edges of the bill and the talons are faded into a pale buff colour. It is likely that the legs and talons were painted a dark black by the taxidermist and the paint has either worn off or faded over the years. The bird is standing tall on a wooden mount and looking forwards. It has a paper identification tag attached to the right leg. The tail is short and the feathers are rounded at the ends.153a. / See catalogue page 61taxidermy mount, taxidermy, animalia, burke museum, beechworth, australian museum, skin, reynell eveleigh johns, bird, america, crow, american crow -

Postcard, Collins Street (looking West), Melbourne, 1907-1914
The Kew Historical Society's postcard collection includes views of Kew, Melbourne and Greater Melbourne as well as those including overseas scenes sent or received from Europe or the Middle East. They date from the 1890s to the 2000s. These postcards may or may not include the name of the publisher or printer. A number of the cards were published as parts of popular series. A way of dating early postcards is to identify whether the reverse was divided by a central line which became the norm after 1902 in the United Kingdom. However, other postcards produced after this date do not always conform to this print layout.Early postcard of MelbourneSepia tinted postcard of Collins Street, Melbourne, Th postcard design includes a line separating the address from the message on the reverse, which dates it after 1902. The stamp on the card is a red Victorian stamp with the head of Queen Victoria in use 1901-1911.Front title - Collins Street (looking West), Melbourne Reverse. - Mrs Garahy, Creek Parade, Clunes, Vic / Dear Mollie / All join with me in wishing you and our dear mother a very prosperous and happy New Year. Photograph, J F C Farquhar, Wellington Street From High Street, 1891
At the beginning of the 1890s, the Kew businessman and Town Councillor, Henry Kellett, commissioned J.F.C. Farquhar to photograph scenes of Kew. These scenes included panoramas as well as pastoral scenes. The resulting set of twelve photographs was assembled in an album, Kew Where We Live, from which customers could select images for purchase. The preamble to the album describes that the photographs used the ‘argentic bromide’ process, now more commonly known as the gelatine silver process. This form of dry plate photography allowed for the negatives to be kept for weeks before processing, hence its value in landscape photography. The resulting images were considered to be finely grained and everlasting. Evidence of the success of Henry Kellett’s venture can be seen today, in that some of the photographs are held in national collections. It is believed that the Kew Historical Society’s copy of the Kellett album is unique and that the photographs in the book were the first copies taken from the original plates. It is the first and most important series of images produced about Kew. The individual images have proved essential in identifying buildings and places of heritage value in the district.Very few of the natural or built features in this panoramic photograph of Wellington Street remain. The open land between High Street South and Denmark Street, then known as O’Shannessy’s Paddock, was to become a residential subdivision at the beginning of the 20th Century. On the far side of Denmark Street, bordered by a picket fence, is the Kew Railway Station (demolished 1957). Further east, the large building with the flagpole is the Kew Recreation Hall (demolished 1960), which was the centre of civic life for almost a century. The building was used for dances, civic functions and exhibitions. A bowling green, tennis courts, and a cricket ground surrounded the Hall. The dominant building in the photograph is Xavier College, founded in 1872 by the Society of Jesus. The first classes for pupils were held in 1878. It is presumed that Farquhar used its roof for two of his bird’s eye views.Wellington Street from High Streetkew illustrated, kew where we live, photographic books, henry kellett -
