Photograph, Mr and Mrs Albert George Harbert
Albert, the son of William Devereux Harbert and Anna Maria Gooch) was born in 1890. He died 15 June 1971 in Malvern. Phoebe Rebecca Georgina Colton (b 1889, Williamstown; d 31 August 1968), the daughter of Henry Culter Colton and Elizabeth Georgina Lucas. Albert and Phoebe were married in 1912 and moved into the house Albert had built at 237 Union Road. He bought the 60 foot frontage block for £60 in 1912 and built the home for £240. Albert built a number of homes in the locality and the shelter sheds at Chatham School. Phoebe had worked as a seamstress prior to marriage, earning 2/6d a week. They had 2 daughters Unice and Norma. Unice remained single. Norma married Henry Jamieson. They both lived to a good age and continued to live locally until frailty in old age caused them to move to nursing homes. Albert and Phoebe are buried in Boroondara Cemetery Spec E, Grave 66. A black and white screened photograph of a man and a woman. A large lot of papers, including this note and many birth, death and burial records, were apparently found in the ceiling cavity of the Sandy Creek/Tarnagulla Post and Telegraph Office in the later 20th Century, during building works. Nellie Gray, born in Ballarat in 1885, was a daughter of Thomas Gray and Ellen Gray, nee Hodge. She was a granddaughter of Linton miner William Hodge. Nellie was noted for her singing voice, and sang at concerts around Australia, and overseas. Nellie was involved in Linton events and activities throughout her life (her grandparents William and Mary Hodge lived at Linton until their deaths in 1905 – see Hodge family file.) She often sang at church services and other events at Linton, e.g. she sang at the Old Lintonians' Association 2nd reunion in November 1914 - an evening entertainment at the Parish Hall. After WW2 Nellie retired to live at LInton. She died in Ballarat in 1976.
